[Closed] Party Planning

What: Lena asks the boys for help planning a birthday party for Webby. Because that can't go wrong

It was only mentioned for a brief moment, but learning that Webby's birthday was coming up meant that Lena had work to do. Unfortunately, while she had an idea of how people celebrated birthdays from what she picked up here and there, actually planning one was not familiar territory for her.

So at some point, each of the guys might find Nectormancer flying around before the bat familiar lands on or near them, holding a note for them. And the note carried a simple message:

Meet me at the library
Lena

She wouldn't be difficult to spot, either, and for all the world it looked like she was just reading.

Though she was also keeping an eye out for Webby, just in case.

If there was one place he knew how to get to, it was the library. Could practically do it with his eyes closed! Lena's note caused him no undue bit of curiosity, and as soon as he received it he headed off to meet her.

She was, indeed, easy to spot, but mindful of the Quiet Rule, he waited until he was close enough to hail her.

"Hey Lena, what's up?"

Glancing up for a moment, she waved the hand still holding a pencil.

"Hey, dude," she said, motioning for him to take a seat. "I need your help with something."

"Of course!" He offered her a warm enough smile as he slid into the chair. "What do you need?"

Tapping her pencil in her notebook, she then slid it over to him so he could see its pages. "See, Webby's birthday is coming up, and I thought it'd be cool throw her a party."

"Webby's birthday?" He picked up the notebook and cast his eyes over it, kicking his feet a little at the prospect of what he was about to say.

"Well, you came to the right guy! I happen to be the Party Master." Duckworth who?

She snickered. "Well good, because I have no idea what I'm doing."

He studied the page again, then held out his hand for her pencil.

"If I may?"

With a shrug, she handed it to him. "Go for it."

Taking the pencil, he spun it in his fingers and then started writing, muttering under himself. "No... No... Maybe if they were pink and purple... Yes... Definite yes... Music in these genres... And let's dull those points on the arrows... No- Wait yes, if they're glow-in-the-dark..."

By the time he's done and has returned the notebook to her, she'll find most of her notes scratched out or ammended, with Huey's hand having added two more pages, plus supplies list, plus tentative schedule.

"There you go! A rough draft of a party idea for Webby."

She blinked as she took the notebook back. "....geez, you weren't kidding."

A prideful laugh through his nose.

"Parties, and especially lists for parties, are kinda my thing."

She snickered. "I kinda figured about the list thing," she quipped. "I'm not sure if we'll be able to do everything on here, though."

"Well, I know the conjured light parade circus might be pushing it a little, especially considering our current schooling level, but I think there should be enough on there we can still use it as a bouncing off point."

She had to glance at the list again, because somehow she had missed that particular bullet point.

"...Yeah. Okay."

There's a total of three pages, including her own first one. She's bound to miss a few.

"So, any idea when you're going to have it? On her birthday, or in the vicinity thereof? I know there's pros and cons to both approaches, which we can cover in detail if you're having problems deciding."

"Nah, that's okay," she said quickly. "I was thinking of having it on her actual birthday."

"Ahh, the traditional approach!" He braced his elbows on the table and pressed his fingertips together in front of his beak. "However, there's a big obstacle still in the way. How to surprise Webby without her instantly going into kung fu kid mode? Because our collective track record is... not great at that."

She frowned slightly at that. "Yeah, that's a good point. She's definitely the hit first type."

"My tailbone still hurts sometimes, I swear." Muttered to himself, as he ticked his index fingers, eyes half-closed in thought. "There's always you leading Webby for a walk into the party space, and let her make her own conclusions before the guests approach her and-or jump out in surprise. Of course with Webby, she may go sailing over the mark entirely and wonder if it's a new spell, or the academy is having a special Pink Day celebration, or something of the sort."

He paused, then waved a hand. "Not that that's a bad thing, of course! But it makes our job all the more difficult."

"Yeah. I can definitely distract her for a little bit. That won't be too hard. Maybe we can skip the whole 'everyone jumps out and yell surprise' thing and just have everyone there with the party set up?"

"Yeah, I'm thinking that'll be the best way to go about it. And if she does misconstrue what the party is for, there'll be the rest of us there to steer her clearer."

"We can have a banner that says 'Happy Birthday, Webby'? Hard to mistaken that."

"That is an extremely good point." He chuckled some, not even mad that Lena had come up with such an essential thing before he did. She was so kind, doing this for Webby and- no Huey, focus.

"Have you talked to the others about this yet?"

"I sent a note to the other two. Louie and I thought maybe a scavenger hunt would be kinda fun. Webby would eat it up."

"A scavenger hunt is an excellent idea. Webby may also appreciate games of skill, perhaps even magic 'duels' that're more flashy Fantastics than they are anything that'd truly hurt."
