July Event Log A Reading Rainbow Though the publication is ordinarily drier than dry toast Modified to be drier than dried toast, this quarter's issue of Thaumaturgy Today is all the rage around campus. The reason: a series of advances in motile spells! Easier and more powerful than those found in your standard book of spells (any grade), these spells achieve their power by specificity. One spell for lifting fruit, one for lifting laundry, one for lifting books, the list goes on. Though Professor Loshakle is deep at work writing a blistering reply criticizing every nuance of these spells, outside of his wrathful gaze the spells flourish as people practice them on everything they can. Copies of the issue are easy to get your hands on, if you want to give these new spells a whirl. On the other hand, your stuff or you yourself might fall victim to the spells of other students, whether by mistake or cruel jest. And woe betide those not human -- since no spell explains how to lift an anthropomorphic duck or a robot, for example, enterprising students are particularly eager to come up with one on their own, and there's only one way to test such things... It's Raw, You Donkey! There was an incident. Mistakes were made. Rice balls were detonated. Puddings were animated and sent on rampages. A cheesebread was found lodged in Makerion Keep, sunk to a depth of three feet in the walls. Whatever happened, and no one seems to have details... the Great Hall is closed and no food is being served. So... what're you going to eat? Several pop-up stands have emerged, as enterprising students try to cash in, but that costs money and who knows how the quality is. Headmaster Birony keeps showing up with pies, having made several savory ones that taste really good, actually, but can you really live on pie alone? (And do you really trust Headmaster Birony?) Some students have taken to the ultimate last resort: cooking. As it happens, the skills of the chef and of the aspiring mage are not exclusive in principle, but generally learning the one means little time to devote to the other. Faced with an oven or a grill, can you muster up the capability to make something edible? Or will you burn the water and turn bread back into grain, and thus have no choice but to avail yourself of pricey booth cooking or Cam-pies? Of course, the Great Hall will PROBABLY be open again soon, you might be able to last until then... The Defense Association In light of certain recent activities, like horrible monster attacks, Professors Trammel and Kith have teamed up to provide self-defense lessons to students who so desire. Purely optional, this extra class at the end of the school day promises study in shields, wards, basic attack spells, and mobility spells (because sometimes the best thing is to run like heck). Needless to say, these classes are quite the adventure! Students find themselves in dueling circles quite frequently, expected to carefully deflect each other's spells. Hopefully you've got the knack of it; the practice spells they have taught you don't cause any harm, but they sting like the dickens! Research on the Sundered Conflict. Conflict seems to be key. As near as the researchers can tell, all the Sundered lead lives that are simply not ordinary, and their experiments in conflict from last month produced results they didn't expect (as you all have learned) but that are most promising. Professor King herself has taken the lead on this experiment, and she warns anyone who volunteers that it is likely to be very dangerous, and they will be taking this very slow. They are, she explains, going to try to bridge the gap between you and the world you came from. A SMALL bridge, a proof of concept, no portal home and celebrations yet. But they hope it will work, and be the first step towards getting you back where you belong. If you agree, they get to work. Any student who undergoes this process immediately regains a power of their choice. It does not have to be on their application, and you do not have to provide proof during AC. It's here now. Only if you do not have a power to regain, you may regain an item instead. The price? For the next three days, you will be haunted by visions of your greatest enemy, your most hated foe, or the person you least wish to see in the world. Perhaps you hear their laughter in the darkness of your room at night. Perhaps you see a fellow student as them. Perhaps they are taunting you from just behind your shoulder... Whatever form it takes, for three days, you will be at their mercy. Or the mercy of your own mind's imagining them. Or perhaps a combination of the two. Who can say...?

Hearing Magica De Spell's wicked cackling 24/7, apparently, is the worst thing that can happen. She's got bags under her eyes from barely sleeping, she stumbles as she walks... but, uh, hey, she's got her child-sized grappling hook back! Hurray!

Less hurray when she hears you making a noise, and suddenly aims the damn thing at you.]

The Defense Association

Given some of the recent events, Atem agrees that it would be wise to brush up on defensive magics since it would better prepare him to defend either the school as a whole or his friends and acquaintances. Therefore, he makes the time to swing by after his regular classes. Combined with all the extra studying he did last month, he isn't leaving much time for recreational activities. That's just as well since he'd allowed Fantastic Foils and other games to consume much of his time in previous months.

"Ha- you've fallen into my trap." Atem replied a bit smugly during one of his practice duels. "You must have missed when I placed that glyph there moments after we started." As intended, really. The more overt spells he'd cast had been for the express purpose of distracting his opponent's attention.

The small but effective explosive energy of the glyph felled his "foe" with relative ease. Once the match was called, Atem moved over to offer them a hand up. "It was a valiant effort though, I'm sure the same trick will not work again."

Research on the Sundered

Having stuck with the research this far, Atem saw no reason to stop now. Yes, there might be danger involved but if it would help the other sundered find a way to their own dimensions then so be it. It was a risk he was willing to take. At first he didn't perceive a noticeable change, but that was how these things usually worked. There was often a delay of a few hours to even a day before the results manifested so he wasn't overly concerned, just quietly hoping that it would not mean winding up in a compromising situation.

In fact, he'd nearly forgotten about it when he was sitting in one of his classes, listening to the lecture that was in progress. That continued even after a husky began speaking to him from an adjacent desk.

Oh, isn't this convenient.... for you pharaoh. The emphasis on the last word displayed the speaker's utter disgust. Atem turned in his seat, gaping at who he saw before standing up.

"Bakura!?" It was a shame that no one else could see the delusions he was now experiencing.

... Getting a second chance at life, or is this a third? The shaggy-haired specter continued. A shame that the villagers of Kul Elna were never afforded such an opportunity. The delusion tilted his head to one side and followed that with a laugh lacking mirth. Tell me, pharaoh, what would all your new friends think about you if they knew the origins of that puzzle around your neck.

"Enough! I don't know what you're playing at this time- but mark my words it will fail just as before!" Someone might want to escort Atem out of the room before he causes more of a scene than he has already.

Lady hadn't really been interested in offering the researchers any assistance, because she didn't really trust them. She'd heard whispers of effects both good and bad, and still pretty nervous about this place she didn't want to throw herself into harm's way. It took several hours of serious thought to realize that if she didn't help, then she very well might be stuck here. Permanently. And that was even scarier. She didn't mind this place, but that didn't mean she didn't want to go home.

And so she took them up on their offer.

She was sitting in class with Atem when her own delusions began to manifest. The cultists from that fateful day surrounding her desk and taunting her until she was on the verge of tears, but she was quick to excuse herself, ducking her head and hurrying into the hall as the followed. Reaching for her. Getting closer and closer and- She snapped upright when she head Atem yell from inside, their ghostly visage dispersing as she quickly ran back in. "..." The entire class had turned to look at him, so she quickly ran over and took his wrist, all but yanking him out of the chair and dragging him into the hall.

A Reading Rainbow

At first glance, Hel scoffed at the contents of the Thaumaturgy Today magazine. Sure the spells it contained looked simple, they were meant to, likely dumbed down to appease their simpleton subscribers. So she cast the rag aside, before her curiosity got the better of her. Her studies were progressing swiftly, but not really fast enough for her liking. She may not actually try these spells, but there was really no harm just in perusing them.

So, finding a comfy chair to sit upon in one of the common areas, she flipped casually through the pages, her eyes roving over them. "They're so specific..." She noted verbally. "Why should you need multiple lifting spells when a universal one should suffice..." Said from experience, since she had mastered levitation in her own dimension and was working on those skills here.

Once she made it to the back cover, she shook her head and stood up, leaving the magazine on the arm of the chair.

Research on the Sundered

Conflict was usually at the root of the problem in her dimension too, when people from other dimensions arrived, so there was little she could say to argue with them. When Saber and Rin appeared there was Gilgamesh to fight. When Asuka, Rei and Shinji appeared, it was the Angels- and so forth. The only exception had been the Vocaloids really. They just arrived sporadically to hold concerts. So just by the averages alone, conflict was more likely to spur a dimensional crossover.

Hel was almost offended when they asked her if she'd like to proceed, as if she were frightened of some mere humans with an ounce of magic to their name. Granted, the researchers were right to question her as Hel had been very reluctant before. It was as if the near altercation with the professor had eased her mind about it in some fashion. That and she still needed to return to stop Ragnarok.

"Let's just get it over with." After they underwent the process she could feel something powerful and familiar coursing through her, and she knew instinctively that some bit of her power had been returned to her. The cost would come later, and when she least expected it.

Later in the hallway, Hel spotted the Jotun Ymir as cocky as ever spouting nonsense about what Odin had allegedly done to him and trying to garner sympathy.

"That won't work on me." She stated to him, before unfurling the cloth of infinity to ensnare him in it. Guess it was a good thing she learned that it could place a person in stasis. She would bind Ymir for now, and when she returned they could deal with him then. For now, this world would be safe from him as he was sealed.

.... Of course Ymir wasn't here, and she likely bundled someone else in the cloth instead. When she comes to her senses, she'll let them out.

Research on the Sundered, because Cliff is a chew toy.

Cliff had just been headed out of class--from one to the next. Some things didn't change for him. He saw Hel, and waved, but she was looking at him funny.

"Hey are you all right?" he asked. And no sooner had the words come out of his mouth than he found himself smothered by a cloth...a moment of being startled, and then nothing more.

Luckily, there was always Rounder to dog Hel's steps. The familiar was a bit more respectful to her than he was to Cliff. She wasn't getting punched. Instead, he tugged at the hem of her robes, insistently.

Probably no chance whatsoever of getting across to her that she'd just kidnapped his master, but damned if the marble sphere wouldn't try...

It's Raw, You Donkey!

Luckily for the other students, Yotsuyu can cook. She even has enough funds to at least attempt to give the truly starving a deal, though she gruffly demands they say as little about it as they possibly can. Though really, what she makes is...the same thing, pretty much, every day. Marinated yakitori, vegetable skewers, rice balls (although hers do not detonate, thank the kami), and flatbread. No alterations, no substitutions. Though she might alternate chicken and steak. If she can get her hands on other ingredients, she might even offer fish! But for now, you get what you get!


The Defense Association

It likely comes as no surprise that Yotsuyu allows her reputation to precede her--at least her classroom reputation. Unyielding taskmaster that she was. Though most of her opponents (save the ones who might know her well) forget that she's just as unyielding to herself, and so she's relentlessly practiced a defensive spell or two. This study is just to cement things in her mind, and take advantage of more learning. Just in case.

But she already knew fleeing was a good thing, thank you...


Research on the Sundered

They had been in the midst of the war, never mind that Hien Rijin had been attempting peace talks with Garlemald. But, that seemed to not be conflict enough.

"It is not pressure," Yotsuyu sniffed at Professor King, when the woman asked, once more, if she wanted to undertake such a thing. "There are others who want--nay, need, to go home. Even if I do not wish it, any iota of research helps, does it not?"

Given the affirmative, Yotsuyu nodded, and settled in to undergo their spellcasting. And she did feel...different, somehow, though she could not yet put a delicately manicured finger upon it. Oh, well--certainly she'd learn later, wouldn't she?

Or perhaps now, no, dear sister? What an insipid whisper it was, that twisted its way through her mind. She scowled--best to pretend that it was nothing, nothing at all, and make her way out of the building.

"If it isn't the cold-blooded little worm," she growled to herself. "Crawling your way through my rotten heart even now, Asahi?"

But oh, Yotsuyu, you were the one who disappointed me. When you could not even take care of the Warrior of Light? What good were you?

"You were just jealous! As ever! It did not matter to you what you were given, always you grasped and clawed for more! Even when I was given naught but a pittance, you would devour your share and snatch mine from me as well! And when I had given my all--you gave me death, you snivelling bastard, whining about Zenos! Well, I am here, and you are but a memory! As you deserve!"

Not that anyone could miss her ranting to herself as she walked towards the living quarters. Likely, the question was--would she see the one who challenged her, or would she see Asahi sas Brutus, her chief tormentor?

Hendrik had been wandering around, brain fried from exams. He'd doubled down on studying because he wasn't half as smart as Jasper, so it took him extra time. To his surprise, he'd been called a nerd and wasn't quite sure what that meant.

But as he wandered around, he turned the corner and saw Yotsuyu standing there cooking. So the knight moved over and looked everything over. She had quite the spread which reminded him of the night he had taught her to dance.

Looking back at her, he nodded. "I had not expected to find you here, but is there something that I might be of assistance with to help prepare?"

Helpful, this man is it.

[Eleven's fingers jingle in his pockets. It's an unusual sound after only having a handful of coins at any given time for months on end. He wants to save the windfall as much as possible, but.. neither is he a particularly gifted cook. He eyes a student's offerings and hesitates]

Er, thank you, but I think I might just fish something up somewhere.

[Coincidentally, it's these sorts of spells that have taken up the majority of his focus since arriving. He's quite adept at protecting himself and rebounding spells, but he's been lacking in attack-oriented magic as a result and hadn't even considered mobility spells until a few lessons in.

He steps up to his practice partner with a cautious smile.]

A mistake. He'd made a mistake.

His nightmares had been blessedly infrequent since arriving in Diatu. Now for the second night in a row, he awoke in cold sweats, body trapped in stasis as his mind roiled with visions of death, destruction, failure, and guilt.

Worse still, they seemed to follow him even in his waking hours. He turned at every sound, fingers itching for the sword strapped to his back. He couldn't sleep for fear, and the third day saw him jumping everywhere shadows lurked. He clutched his chest and recoiled from contact only to offer breathless apologies when they passed.

But he'd made the mistake of dozing off after classes let out, and woke to what at first had seemed like just another student, only to warp and twist into another form altogether.

The Lord of Shadows loomed, a cruel smile stretched across painted lips.

Eleven's heart seized, but wide eyes were drawn to a familiar warmth on the back of his hand. The mark there shone with a soft, golden light and he watched as it shot up to the darkening sky, amplified and pulsing white against the clouds.

Lightning burst from the heavens and screamed to earth.

The knight had just finished taking a shower and was walking along a path. As he was about to get back to his room, he remembered that he'd forgotten a book. So he turned around and went right back for it.

Lightning lit the sky and Hendrik had a feeling he needed to find the Luminary. So he did double-time in order to locate his charge. He kept moving and felt like it was his first day here that he'd seen Eleven, chasing after him as he had been.

Finally, his blue-green eyes saw the boy in question and knelt before him. "Are you alright?"

[ It's the worst thing to ever happen. Tidus is miserable without food, and he's new enough that he doesn't have a steady income source yet. He's desperate enough to trade favors. If he sees anyone carrying ingredients...]

Hey, I can help! I'll follow your lead. Promise.

[ The rest of the time he paces nervously, as if trying to think through his predicament. ]

Defense Association

[ He is all for practical uses of their magic. Dodging with his quick reflexes and athletic prowess seems to be his favored strategy, but when backed into a corner he counters---or tries to.

He seems to be floating away, still slightly singed from the latest hit---at this development he looks down, bewildered. ]

Ah...was that supposed to happen?

[ His inner demon is someone the other students know very well. How could it not be? That familiar growl is always there to whisper:

Give it up, kid. Everyone can see you just don't measure up. Gonna cry about it?

The teen seems to growl at random intervals, and he might occasionally take a swing over his shoulder. Hope you weren't too close. ]

[Well, this is just a delight. He isn't exactly a world class chef, but he has had time on his hands. Way too much time, some days, and his tastes are still quite picky. There isn't a chance that he's about to let himself starve to death here in this world, but neither is he content to stuff himself with sweets and chance mangling his figure while he's at it.]

[So he may have taken to a cookbook or two and is now trying his hand at something simple enough. In that effort, he might just happen to be carrying a few canned goods with him toward the kitchen, intent on putting them to good use, when he comes across Tidus unexpectedly.]

Oh? Have you any experience with this sort of task?

[ Kaiba is sitting down to study when he spots the magazine. It's potentially useful for class, so he picks it up, cracks it open....

And a bright rainbow bursts out of the pages, having the nerve to sparkle. He yelps and drops it like it's hot. ]

What the---

[He backs away and opens his class notebook. More rainbow. Dropped just as fast. Next textbook. Flung to the ground so fast. Kaiba shoots off rainbows one after the other, flinging each book away in disgust.

Inspiration strikes. He opens one book against the floor, limiting the rainbow's arc. ]

How do I stop this.

[ Kaiba knows by now that these research questions are really a bad idea, but he's in such a foul mood from the rainbow incident that he'll do anything to get it to stop. The promise of a treasured item helps too.

At last, the locket shaped like a trading card is in its rightful place on his chest, but it came at a terrible price. Everywhere he looks, there's a memory. Cruel laughter that he whirls to face. Cold taunts during study hours. Lonely nights with the howl of the wind.

He tries to maintain a stiff upper lip, as he'd needed to back then, but after a night of no sleep he's rather twitchy. One shadow hits the wrong way and he sees double, whirling on anyone who crosses him. ]

Leave him ALONE, you monster---

Whoa, hey! [First, she jerks out of the way of that swing. Secondly, Isabel catches Seto's fist and grips it--for the wiry girl she is, it's a surprisingly strong grip, and even if he tries to jerk away, she doesn't let go. Something's up, that she can tell.]

What's eating you? Leave who alone? [She'll leave the monster comment for now, but maybe he's seeing things that aren't actually there...]

Ooh, this is the kind of stuff she loves to learn! Sunset devours the books happily, and she can be seen lifting the desks in an empty classroom. One problem...they're stuck up there.

"Okay...hmm. How to get them down..."

Hungry? No problem! Well...maybe a bit of a problem. Sunset's a vegetarian, and her dietary options are more limited than most. She can be seen gathering plants and herbs, eventually setting up a salad station on campus.

"Don't forget your veggies!"

They need to get closer to solving this mystery, and Sunset's prize is a little red necklace around her neck. There's more to it than that, but for now...she's getting a crash course in facing her fears.

A cold voice tells her she hasn't changed. That the duel last month was just a taste of freedom, and soon...soon she'll conquer this pathetic world too! Sunset falls to her knees and covers her ears.

"No! No, I won't listen!"

Noctis worked in a sushi restaurant when he was younger. So the most he can really manage is rice balls and simple ingredient sushi things. Luckily he still had some of the fish leftovers from the beach fishing excursion so that got worked into the rice.

Unfortunately, Ignis isn't here so the king has to manage on his own. And he won't talk about how much his advisor is missed, especially at times like this. Nor will he be discussing the time about how he asked Ignis about the pan he blackened and had almost thrown out so long ago when he had his own place. The only reason it 'lived' was because of his advisor cleaning the thing.

He's not really trying to feed anyone, but should anyone ask he just shrugs.

"Go ahead, help yourself."

Research

When he heard about a chance to figure out how to possibly go home, Noctis moved his tail. The last time the researchers wanted something, he hadn't given them a glance when they asked for hair samples and whatever other crazy things they'd requested of him.

He sat perfectly still now though for Professor King and didn't even care about the danger that she mentioned because he was already gone in his world. If he got lucky, hopefully soon Noctis would find himself home and be able to go to sleep at the very least.

And if this worked, maybe others could go home too. As a king, helping others was what he did though he'd done that as a prince too if all those hunts and quests were anything to go by. On top of that, it was just him and Yotsuyu that night in case the daemon got out to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting people that were gathered there. But he hadn't told her he'd send her running first before he asked her to help him.

The part about conflict had no effect on him. That had been the story throughout his life. Fight this thing, do this, go over here to this place, fight this thing. The hunts he'd done and the many battles he'd had to fight were numerous so conflict was nothing new. This time though he'd be fighting without his friends. However, he'd faced other things and Ardyn alone though he'd had a lot more of an arsenal back then.

He went out for a walk a few hours later, not sure what to think and somehow waited for something to happen. The results hadn't been revealed to him, so he summoned a green plastic drink sword. Pondering going home he tossed it and watched it sail away from him into a small pine tree.

The next thing he knew there was a flash of blue, and he blinked and was right on the little sword. The king's blue eyes looked around and didn't see anyone. So he took his father's blade off of his back and tried the exact same thing with a bigger tree and a much bigger and emptier area.

Yup, same result. Noctis was elated because now he had his Warp Strike back! So he used it all damn day until he tired himself out. Going to bed that night though, he had a dream of seeing Ardyn and he was back in Insomnia.

'The once hapless and helpless prince. Is he now ready to claim his crown? Don't let us down.' Ardyn drawled menacingly. Noct then raced to clash against the other. They both crashed into buildings, and then warped to the ground and stood, facing each other. 'Let the games..begin.' Ardyn said in a low tone. 'No, now they end.' the king declared determinedly. Armigers then came out and the two battled fiercely.

Waking up with a start, Noct shook it off as just a bad dream. That was until he was walking to class and could swear he heard Ardyn's laugh and turned around to no one there. Or when he would turn his head, he thought he saw a glimpse of the black hat or long coat out of the corner of his eye.

It was almost like a wild goose chase, and wherever Ardyn seemed to be, the king would try and catch up.

Please don't get run over or run into by a guy thinking he's seeing an old adversary.

"Hey," Cliff mumbled weakly from a few beds over. "You okay? You didn't sound real good there." Sure, he was trying to sleep, but it'd sure sounded like the new guy was having nightmares.

Not that he really had to endure that sort of thing, but maybe talking about it would help. Cliff sat up, his familiar already spinning in place (which was generally what Rounder did at night, considering he didn't have to sleep like something organic might). He wasn't sure he should get too close to Noctis, the way the guy had been flailing mere moments earlier, but.

"Pssst!" There might be a few grumpy snarls from the other denizens of the floor, but really, Cliff was doing his best to be relatively quiet. "Wanna talk about it?"

Link was cooking a fish, whole, on a stick, over a fire. It...might not look appetizing, but, it's good enough for the Hylian, and he's very willing to share.



Research

If there was a voice that Link hadn't expected to hear in this new world, it was Ganondorf. And he'd heard almost nothing but the man's voice, catching glimpses of him out of the corner of his eye, when it was quiet.

He took a deep breath, trying to do his homework in the peace of the library, which was exceedingly difficult with a Gerudo King whispering threats and taunts.

"The Hero of Time, now a little scholar. Leaving for another seven years? Makes it easy to keep ruling your homeland. Thanks, kid! Couldn't have done it without you."

"SHUT UP!" Link bellowed, causing a few students to jump, before he slumped back over his book, and rubbed his temples.

"Think they know how big you and the princess messed up?"

His shoulders tensed, but, Link was determined to try and ignore the apparition this time.

What a bummer that the great hall is closed, though maybe things will be fine with how some people are mobilizing to make small profits with food stands. Spyro is trotting along casually and ready to go see what else the research team has up their sleeves when he scents the smell of a small campfire and burning fish.

... Okay once he sees, the dragon can tell it's not actually turning into an inedible crisp, but it doesn't smell like anything more than unseasoned meat.

The chance to get back his fire magic or the ability to summon one of his weapons. Another step closer to being able to go home. He should be jumping at the chance, no matter how much it was bound to suck. And when he'd first arrived here, he would have. But now...

Now Isa, Roxas, and Xion were all here. Now he knew that Xehanort would be beaten. Now he'd actually somewhat gotten to like having a semblance of a normal life; no creepy old guys trying to start potentially world-ending wars, no Heartless, no massive crises that demanded everyone's attention. He hadn't realized how much he'd missed having homework of all things being one of his biggest worries. Plus he'd made other friends here too, like Webby and Eleven, and they wouldn't be able to follow him back home no matter what happened.

He knew he should want to go home. And he did! Kinda. But he also wanted to stay, about equally as much. Under most such circumstances, he'd just follow his heart... but it was his heart that was part of the problem in this case, and it was just as divided on the issue as his mind was.

Meanwhile, back in the world outside of Lea's mind, Isa would probably notice that his friend had become uncharacteristically silent, staring out the window pensively, their latest study/conversation session seemingly forgotten.

Isa knew the answer already, of course, Lea isn't typically so pensive. He was just trying to gently coax Lea back from getting lost in his own thoughts.

The Defense Association

[No stranger to self-defense, either by magical or physical means, Kuja had almost turned up his nose at the chance to partake of classes that would teach him the basics. Yet for one reason or another, something about it caught his eye, and he finds himself indulging anyway. Maybe he's just curious, maybe he might learn something. This world isn't his own after all, and though he's getting to know it better by the way, he can only get so far trapped on this campus.]


Research on the Sundered

[It isn't until he reviews the new research to be held this month that he comes to an epiphany: he doesn't want to go home. There simply is no home for him anymore, and whether he ends up shunted back there or not, this world is all that he has left. Damnably so. He has but one goal, and it may very well be that as long as he's here, he already has achieved what he set out to do after departing Spiritus and Materia's realm for the final time.]

[But there is one thing left to do. Just one. Small. Thing. And following his epiphany, he has a second: he isn't ready to die.]

[Maybe he still can do something to help this world after all. Maybe there can be one good thing he does with his wretched life. So he volunteers for the research again, having been thoroughly warned of the consequences. Immediately, he feels his soul surge as he regains his ability to invoke Trance, but he stops, chilled by a sudden sense of oppression, clear and absolute.]

[He had been warned. He knew exactly what he was getting himself into, and yet the first time he turns the corner and sees the man standing there, dark and robed and cold and uncaring, it still hits him like a burst of winds frigid enough that even he has to shiver. It's almost enough to send him into Trance right then and there, but he manages to stop short of his eyes tinting red.]

Yuki is new to magical self-defense, but regular defense with martial arts was nothing new. And if he could learn magical defense, he might be in a better position to help those that helped him.

Because of when he thought about Fluttershy having to rescue him that day, it grated on his nerves. Shigure would definitely have a good laugh if he ever heard about this. There were a few others that would never let him hear the end of it either.

So he found himself paired with a man with long silver hair with his name written on a piece of paper. It reminded him of Ayame's hair, but this man looked like he'd seen his share of real battles, unlike his brother.

Hesitantly he walked over to the man and slightly bowed. "My name is Yuki Sohma. I am to be your defense partner according to the slip I received from Professor Trammel."

Take a Look

Paper balanced carefully on her fusion driver, Orisa consulted the spell, then looked up at the book she'd set on the ground. Her hand traced a pattern in midair with swift and incredibly precise moments, like a very zippy 3D-printer head.

"Telekinesis, literature!"

The book hopped into the air, where it floated quite effortlessly. Orisa examined it curiously, her eyeshields whirling open to their fullest extent -- before they snapped shut into delighted quirks.

"That was so very easy!"

Orisa tromped in place a couple of times, her legs raising and then dropping back to the ground in a clockwise fashion, before she hopped a few feet to the right and then back to the left in sheer exuberance. That was perhaps the easiest spell she had ever performed! These new spells were amazing!

It's In a Book

The keen-eyed among the Sundered might notice an unusual sight: a bush that seems to contain a very omnic-like figure. Orisa could hold impressively still when she needed to, thanks to the precision of her servomotors, but she certainly couldn't change her colors or shape to blend in better with the shrubbery. What the heck?

Dumbledore's Army

With a bright look that would be a smile on someone with a functional mouth, Orisa waved a hello to her new partner as they stepped into their little dueling space. "Hello! I am prepared to resist all spells directed my way!"

She did indeed look ready, with a wand in her hand and a confident pose that looked like she could take on the world and win. As a protector, she must definitely master defensive magics such as this to protect those she is trying to shield.

"Give me your best challenge, please!"

Research

The harsh repetitive sound of Orisa's fusion driver filled the air, along with an ice-cream truck rendition of "Turkey in the Straw" thanks to her stupid power. But her current situation was anything but comical --

No, it was extremely comical, because Orisa was furiously discharging ammunition into a shrubbery. "I will allow no harm to come to others from you!" she snarled at the leafy bush, even as charged particles ripped through its leaves. "Your reign of domination ends here! There will be no more attacks or suffering!"

Okay. With the anger in her voice and her furious intent on wreaking havoc on someone not truly there... maybe it wasn't so funny after all.

[Teeth gritted and one hand clamped firmly on his hat, Dust stalks from the Great Hall to Kedrigan Hall fuming and cranky. One of those new levitation spells works on hats, as it turns out, and for some reason a lot of people think yoinking his is the best idea in the word.]

[Grumpy and out of tempered, Dust isn't in much of a mood to be nice. And any sudden movement around him is likely to be met with him whirling and dropping his free hand to the hilt of one sword -- because he's been caught by people drawing wands often enough to get sensitized very quickly indeed.]

There's a Hunger Brewing

[Dust -- Dust likes his food. A lot. He says he has a sweet tooth, and that's true, but he has a tooth for a lot of everything else too. The lack of food is hitting him hard.]

[Which is why he's staring at some of the pop-up booths, one hand in his pocket to count and recount the coins there by touch. His focus has been on training and practice, not earning money, so the rather pricey offerings are out of his reach no matter how many times he passes coins between his fingers, like they'll transform into something more worthwhile if he just hopes and thinks hard enough.]

[Not helping matters at all, his stomach growls loudly and without any subtlety at all. He quickly puts a hand to it, hoping no one noticed, but...]

[Who is Dust talking to? Because he might be looking at you, but you're not General Gaius. Worse still, the low intensity of his voice cuts like a blade, a warning to anyone who hears it that whatever strength the Sen-Mithrarin has will be brought to bear in moments, swift and unyielding.]

So you've come here as well. Did you learn your lesson? Are you done? Or must I purge your madness from another world?!

[In a blurred motion, Dust yanks both swords free and drops into a ready stance, the Blade of Ahrah held reverse-grip at his side while Furae crosses his body from her hilt, held by the arm that he holds just below his face.]

[Afternoon finds Jecht wandering around the Merchant District, a bag tossed over his shoulder and a list in his hand that clearly is giving him some difficulty.]

Man, I sure hope some of these things are spices. If they're fruit or something I don't know what I'm gonna do...

[Earn your bread, Yotsuyu had said to him. Get her some ingredients and she'll feed him. What she hasn't counted on, or maybe has, is how little Jecht knows about the culinary arts. Pepper and salt, he gets those, but what the heck is 'schitimi'?]

[He might've finally earned some food, enough to keep him going, but those who spot Jecht over the next couple of days are looking at a man who's gotten no sleep at all. Quite aside from his usual energy and ego, he's openly dragging, eyes puffy and bloodshot, and no bounce in his step.]

[And every once in a while he cringes, for no apparent reason. After all, no one else can feel the sudden ominous pressure -- the shift in atmosphere, the feeling of dread, everything that comes with the imminent attack of a creature large than buildings and as unbreakable as diamond. A quick jerk of his head, looking for the Sinspawn that it flings from its body, but there's nothing. The presence is just illusion.]

He's got to get back to the dorms to take a shower as covered in dirt as Yuki is from planting a few new things. Then he has to get caught up on homework at the library. Midterms may be over, but homework is still definitely a thing though it won't take him long to get it done.

He then hears someone talking and the voice sounds familiar. Approaching slowly, he sees Jude up against the wall talking to..someone. His eyes note that she has a sword but he's not sure that he should approach.

Seeing no one there that she could be speaking to, the grey head shakes but he stays right where he is, preferring to try and talk to her.

"Are you..alright?"

"Mnnn..." Noa's penguins, fortunately, have offered to help their charge in his great time of need. The boy needs food! Good food!

He is not, however, entirely certain about this. Noa can be seen cautiously squinting at what Could be a very nice sushi dish...if there were only a bit of rice to be seen. It's all nicely cut raw fish, and Noa isn't entirely sure if this is going to be healthy.

Noa is practically fuming in some of his lessons, and dancing in others. But a defense class seems like a stellar idea after the last little while, so he's doing his best to stick to it.

This was a mistake however, and now there's a hyperventilating cabbage-headed boy behind a pillar, behind a bush, behind Anything at any given point in the next three days as he covers his ears and screws his eyes shut.

He didn't think danger would mean something on this level.

Seto is hearing the same voice, if not quite the same words. He's been convinced by now that it's a trick, and he's trying to resist, but that's harder than it sounds. As he's trying to shut the voice out on his way to the dorm, he spots a familiar head.

"Noa."

You never lived up to him, Seto, the voice taunted in his ear. The poorest possible substitute, a failure in every way.

He growls and kneels in front of Noa, trying to gently get his attention---but that's not too possible with his eyes and ears closed. After a moment, he reaches and touches his arm gently.

"It's an illusion. He's dead. Don't listen."

This...could end very badly.

It's Raw, You Donkey!

It wasn't something that was widely known, but Lea was actually a pretty good cook. And with the school kitchen temporarily down for the count, he decided to make use of his skills. He managed to cobble together a simple stand selling various kinds of grilled skewers, as they were- in his mind- the perfect summer food for a busy student or teacher; they were fairly quick and easy to make, they were relatively inexpensive, they were extremely portable, and they could provide a decent variety.

Especially since Lea had had the foresight to talk to some of the temporarily out of work kitchen workers, who'd been willing to let him use ingredients from the school stores that might otherwise go to waste in the downtime for a small fee. Thus he was able to offer beef, chicken, and shrimp skewers, as well as vegetable ones and ones with meat and vegetables combined. There was even an option of a grilled fruit skewer, which made a decent breakfast or desert option.

The Defense Association

Now this was the kind of extracurricular activity that Lea could get behind. While he would much rather have his Keyblade to deflect spells, being able to do so without it was handy too. So there he was, standing in a circle with a number of other students, ready to try his hand at the local version of Reflect.

Research on the Sundered

It wasn't real. He had to keep reminding himself of that. None of the times he heard Master Xehanort's gravelly laugh, or seen Xemnas lurking around a corner. None of it was real. None of them could actually hurt anyone.

'Are you certain about that, boy?', came the gravelly voice of Master Xehanort. Lea forced himself to ignore it. To not respond. Just keep walking. It wasn't real.

'Even without your Keyblade, you still play at being a Guardian of Light?', came Xemnas' deep bass monotone. 'Do you truly believe there is anything you can do to stop what is destined to happen?'

"Shut up," Lea grumbled before silently cursing himself for responding.

Xemnas voice came again, though this time instead of being of vague origin, it sounded as though he were right behind Lea, and the other's familiar dark shadow seemed to fall over him. 'You cannot protect them,' the apparition said. 'Among the so call Guardians, you will never be more than an 'also ran'.'

"I said shut up!", Lea said, whirling around, ready to punch him... only to be confronted with the startled face of one of his fellow students. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. "Sorry... I um..."

It would all be worth it though. As at the end of the three days, he would wake up from restless dreams to find his Keyblade laying on the trunk at the foot of his bed.

A Reading Rainbow
New spells to study? And you expect Huey to not be all over that? He's got one of those issues open in one hand, his (Eiather-given) wand in the other, and though his eyes are on the page he's doing just as the spell prescribes. Starting small, he's got a small arrangement of fruit a few feet in front of him and he aims to move them one at a time. A spell for the apple, a spell for the orange, and so on.

You might just catch him succeeding in that or, since his eyes aren't actually on what he's magicking, YOU might just wind up being an accidental subject of it all. Fun times for everybody!

"Food shortages"? Oh no no no! Not while Huey Duck is around! He's- somehow -acquired a small store of food and has set up his own little station, near to the Eiather area but open to anyone from any house. And while most of his cooking skills are.... questionable, he can at least manage a few simple campfire treats (bless you Junior Woodchucks), and though a certain green-tinted brother may find it rephrehensible, he's giving them away for free.

So come stop by for a simple hotdog, a piece of foil-wrapped corn, maybe some s'mores. Or if you're feeling adventurous, there's always the fish. ...It's supposed to be that color, right? The roasted veggies might be safer, but you should probably eat around the burnt parts...

He'd practically volunteered just on the words "Extra Class" but the fact that it could prove useful on its own was an extra bonus. Huey proves adept at learning the ropes initially because of course he does, but he's going to need a little extra practice just to get it all down.

Which is where you come in, of course. Time to challenge a small duckling who's looking at you with fierce determination. Have fun!

Webby blinked, suddenly no longer able to feel the floor under her feet. She glanced downward, seeing that she was now starting to hover a few inches in the air.

[Roxas is not a chef. He's the farthest from it. In fact, the most he really knows about cooking is vague snippets of memory from his time in Sora's heart, where the boy had learned to cook thanks to a rat tugging on his hair and directing his movements. So while Roxas has a basic idea of what cooking is, hands-on? He's got no experience.]

[But that doesn't stop him from somehow being tossed behind a stove, working on... he's honestly not sure. It's a meat dish of some kind - What was it called again? Beef sauté? In any case, he's mostly going off of the vaguest of vague ideas, and it's turning out... well, it doesn't smell too bad?]

[He'll serve up a plate of this dish to any hungry student who stops by to order some food. He hopes it tastes good, and offers a wry grin at those who aren't quite satisfied with the dish.]

[It seemed like a promising idea at first. Any sort of connection back home was something Roxas desperately wanted, and despite the dangers Roxas was willing to try, if it meant they could go home sooner. But now that it's actually undertaken, he's wondering if he made a mistake volunteering for this bit of research.]

[It starts with voices. Gentle murmurs, whispered taunts, angry threats. He does his best to ignore them, but as the voices continue, it becomes harder and harder to do so.]

"You really think the truth is going to make you feel better? It won't."
"So it's true. You really are his Nobody. Guess DiZ was right after all."
"You...you were never supposed to exist, Roxas."
"A Nobody doesn't have a right to know. Nor does it even have the right to be."

Shut up...

[He knows the voices are voices of the past. He knows things are different now, and that he's more than just a Nobody; he has a heart of his own, a life of his own. But that doesn't stop the rage from building as, a day or so later, he's confronted in a lone hall with the vision of a man cloaked in crimson robes.]

"I am a servant of the world. And if I'm a servant, then you should consider yourself a tool, at best."

That's not true... things have changed. I'm more than just a Nobody.

"Is that so?"

[He turns, seeing another figure; this time, it's of a man in a long black coat with long silver hair.]

"You think that this supposed life you now have makes you more than just a Nobody? That you still have a right to exist?"

I said shut up!!

[He whips his arms to the sides as his face contorts in anger, the two Keyblades he recovered upon completing this agreement appearing in his hands, and he moves to attack... only he pauses, realizing that the cloaked men are no longer before him, and instead he finds himself face to face with a confused fellow student.]

I Can Fly Twice As High

What good are levitating spells if you're a three-foot-tall duck and can't use them on yourself? Dewey was really looking forward to being able to reach some of his homework books in the library by himself, but ... the student levitation spell was, as the prompt so artfully states, not designed for ducks. Therefore, everything that expressed any sort of "student" quality has levitated quite easily.

Dewey himself has not.

His wand and uniform are up by the top shelves, right where he'd wanted to be. He's currently scrambling to grab stacks of books and pile them up to hide behind. Because even though anthropomorphic ducks don't feel a need for pants, once the shirts go away, that gets really embarrassing really fast.

A little help might be needed.


This Fish Is So Raw It's Still Looking For Its Son

Sure, everyone else is busy trying to keep themselves fed, and he's helped Huey with that a little bit, but the more Dewey hears about all the weird things that happened to the food, the more he wants to see some for himself. So he sets out to explore the academy, notebook in hand. Once he finds one - a series of flan stuck to the ceiling like strange, sugary mushrooms - he reaches up and pokes one with the tip of his wand.

"Do you think the five-second rule applies to ceiling food, too?"


School of Rock

Dewey shows up to the self-defense class armed with something ... different. In addition to the wand he's been slowly but steadily getting a little better with, he has a guitar slung over his back. He steps into the dueling space and takes his guitar, setting it down on the floor and drawing his wand. After a few carefully practiced glyphs, some carvings he's made around the soundhole start to glow - what else - blue. He puts his wand back and picks the guitar back up ... and as he starts to tune it, it sounds to those who would recognize such phenomena as though it's plugged in to an amp.

He looks up and smirks at whoever might be considering a duel. "Come at me, bros."


It's No Surprise To Me

Dewey knows how important it is for his siblings to get home - they need to meet Della, especially since he hasn't exactly figured out how to tell them about her, just yet. So he signs up without hesitation.

The problem is, every time he looks in the mirror, his reflection just ... glares at him. It's unnerving for the first day, but on the second day, it starts to talk back.

You're not good enough, you know. You're not learning fast enough. By the time you get back, she'll be bored. She'll have found some other adventure, something better, and she'll be GONE. All because you got yourself yanked out here.

"I know how this works," Dewey tells his reflection. "You think I haven't seen a million movies and read a billion comic books with this sort of thing? You're lying. I'm gonna get home. I'm working on it RIGHT NOW."

By the end of the day, it's not limited to his reflection in mirrors. Water, glass, other people's glasses, anything shiny. Which includes CHRONOS' ever-present face... which means he's constantly getting berated and heckled. By himself. At the proper time of day, he whips around and hollers, "CHRONOS, ARE YOU EVER GONNA QUIT IT?"

To his credit, the giant floating watch replies, "Give it about twenty-four hours or so."

Dewey snatches up the nearest tablecloth and throws it over his familiar with a groan.

"You think that's gonna work, that's SO CUTE."

Cue a ragged scream.

Yuki had figured he was the only one that had seen this place with the upside-down mushrooms. When Dewey came in, he looked over at the other more in curiosity than anything else. But then he noticed the other student poking at them. So he turned his head away politely.

At hearing the question, the gray head looked back. Setting his stuff down, Yuki headed over and looked up a little better than he had been before.

"I think they've been up there longer than five seconds."

Super Late To The Party OTA (TWEWY spoilers.)

So zetta lame. But last month wasn't too terrible, just talk to a bunch of zeroes about their pointless deaths. So he figured he might as well go for it this time.

At first he didn't notice the new power, since he didn't transform all that often to begin with. What he did notice was a laugh coming from the shadows. He reached for his bullhorn and caught sight of a familiar head of pale hair. He aimed his bullhorn, but Yoshua had slid around the corner and vanished.

So. He was here too then? Well fine. In fact it was so factoring beautiful. Sho could take this UG AND crush that smarmy brat into paste at the same time. "You can't fight infinity." he said with a smug smile and headed off to hunt his prey.

Classes were left untaught and unattended. Ignored. Homework wasn't touched. For three days Sho Minamimoto wasn't even making trash sculptures. He was focused solely on hunting down that factoring hectopascal with aims to erase him once and for all. Sadly all he ever seemed to manage to hit were buildings.....


Reading Rainbow

After he realized that Yoshua was gone, and hadn't ever actually been there, Minamimoto went back to his art and his daily death. While working on one tower he found a discarded issue of Thaumaturgy Today and... okay, that was a level of precision he as a math fanatic and artist could appreciate. He gathered specific things from the listed spells into his creation and then ascended to sit on the top and practice with stuff from within, carefully enough, and with enough awareness of how he balanced things to do it without wobbling the monolith he was sitting on. The items he was practicing on wobbled or caught fire or in other ways acted not as intended, but amazingly the structure itself remained sound.

As a teacher, Minamimoto felt it behooved him to offer to help. Which mostly meant he will be attacking students who step up to test their defenses. Fail and face erasure. Thankfully, you've probably been warned by another student to avoid him.... right?

Late Xion OTA

Okay... so.... the food hall is closed? So? Xion would spend most of that time, when hungry, at the The Ice Creamatorium in the Magic District. They might say that Nobody could live on ice cream alone. Well, she's just the Nobody who can.

The people doing things had given her some answers and set things up so that she could see and hear what she did with Axel and Saïx. She still wasn't sure what to make of any of it... but if they had more missions, she should do them, right? So she was going to try. She wasn't quite sure what they were doing until....

From under her hood her eyes went wide as she spotted Xemnas. She immediately stepped between the researchers and him, and thrust her hand out. The sudden weight there startled her for a moment and she just stared at her Keyblade then shook her head. No. With Roxas here she was determined to never use that again. She made it vanish and glared at Xemnas. "I have the Keyblade. It's me you want. Well... come and get me."

With that she BOLTED. He was going to destroy her or dusk her or worse, but if she could get him away from people, maybe she could take him down with her. She doubted it, but at least, maybe, she had some chance of keeping him from finding out that the others were here....

A reading Rainbow

Ever since the issue came out, V could be found more often than not in the Starchime Library transcribing spells from the publication into a large spell book. V could sometimes also be found out on campus practicing these spells, and practicing modified versions of them. Thankfully V is mostly choosing targets that aren't alive. Unless V gets ticked off, of course....

Research

Very well. V's faith in these people is still somewhat lower than the lowest plane of the infernal realms, but V can understand research for research's sake and is willing to at least make the attempt to work with these idiots. After all, their overall Wis and Int stats probably aren't their fault. After all, spending time with them has proven that they aren't dump stats as their Cha, Dex, and Str all seem to be low too. Even if their Con is amazing some people apparently just have low overall stats. So V was trying. Was even attempting to be polite about it. Well, for V anyway.

"No..." V said, stumbling back before firming up in stance to stand strong. "No. I killed you," V growled up at the black dragon. "You will not harm my family any longer, foul beast, for I have slain you once before and I shall do so again!" Of course, then V had a three way soul splice. Now V had... wait.. were those first level spells? Okay. V now had first level spells. Against an adult black dragon. As a clothie.
