A Reading Rainbow

Though the publication is ordinarily drier than dry toast Modified to be drier than dried toast, this quarter's issue of Thaumaturgy Today is all the rage around campus. The reason: a series of advances in motile spells! Easier and more powerful than those found in your standard book of spells (any grade), these spells achieve their power by specificity. One spell for lifting fruit, one for lifting laundry, one for lifting books, the list goes on. Though Professor Loshakle is deep at work writing a blistering reply criticizing every nuance of these spells, outside of his wrathful gaze the spells flourish as people practice them on everything they can.

Copies of the issue are easy to get your hands on, if you want to give these new spells a whirl. On the other hand, your stuff or you yourself might fall victim to the spells of other students, whether by mistake or cruel jest. And woe betide those not human -- since no spell explains how to lift an anthropomorphic duck or a robot, for example, enterprising students are particularly eager to come up with one on their own, and there's only one way to test such things...

It's Raw, You Donkey!

There was an incident. Mistakes were made. Rice balls were detonated. Puddings were animated and sent on rampages. A cheesebread was found lodged in Makerion Keep, sunk to a depth of three feet in the walls. Whatever happened, and no one seems to have details... the Great Hall is closed and no food is being served.

So... what're you going to eat? Several pop-up stands have emerged, as enterprising students try to cash in, but that costs money and who knows how the quality is. Headmaster Birony keeps showing up with pies, having made several savory ones that taste really good, actually, but can you really live on pie alone? (And do you really trust Headmaster Birony?) Some students have taken to the ultimate last resort: cooking.

As it happens, the skills of the chef and of the aspiring mage are not exclusive in principle, but generally learning the one means little time to devote to the other. Faced with an oven or a grill, can you muster up the capability to make something edible? Or will you burn the water and turn bread back into grain, and thus have no choice but to avail yourself of pricey booth cooking or Cam-pies? Of course, the Great Hall will PROBABLY be open again soon, you might be able to last until then...

The Defense Association

In light of certain recent activities, like horrible monster attacks, Professors Trammel and Kith have teamed up to provide self-defense lessons to students who so desire. Purely optional, this extra class at the end of the school day promises study in shields, wards, basic attack spells, and mobility spells (because sometimes the best thing is to run like heck). Needless to say, these classes are quite the adventure! Students find themselves in dueling circles quite frequently, expected to carefully deflect each other's spells. Hopefully you've got the knack of it; the practice spells they have taught you don't cause any harm, but they sting like the dickens!

Research on the Sundered

    Conflict.

Conflict seems to be key. As near as the researchers can tell, all the Sundered lead lives that are simply not ordinary, and their experiments in conflict from last month produced results they didn't expect (as you all have learned) but that are most promising. Professor King herself has taken the lead on this experiment, and she warns anyone who volunteers that it is likely to be very dangerous, and they will be taking this very slow.

They are, she explains, going to try to bridge the gap between you and the world you came from. A SMALL bridge, a proof of concept, no portal home and celebrations yet. But they hope it will work, and be the first step towards getting you back where you belong.

If you agree, they get to work.

Any student who undergoes this process immediately regains a power of their choice. It does not have to be on their application, and you do not have to provide proof during AC. It's here now. Only if you do not have a power to regain, you may regain an item instead.

    The price?

For the next three days, you will be haunted by visions of your greatest enemy, your most hated foe, or the person you least wish to see in the world. Perhaps you hear their laughter in the darkness of your room at night. Perhaps you see a fellow student as them. Perhaps they are taunting you from just behind your shoulder... Whatever form it takes, for three days, you will be at their mercy. Or the mercy of your own mind's imagining them. Or perhaps a combination of the two. Who can say...?

"Oh! You mean, for once, someone didn't think I was my brother? That is so great, you have no ideee----aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh wait you're hearing voices, that's not good, never mind, forget I said that, wow."

He then walks a circle around Roxas, trying to figure it out.

"Where did those two super-cool swords go?"
twilightskey: (Oh?)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-07-29 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Roxas just blinks at Dewey, but then chuckles softly.

"You have to do that a lot?" Sounded like trouble.

"Huh? Oh, I just dismissed them." He holds out his hands, and both Keyblades rematerialize in them.

[personal profile] couldabeenturbo 2019-07-30 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Happens all the time when you're a triplet, believe me." He rolled his eyes. "I'm Dewey. If you think you see me but I'm wearing green, and ruder, and act like I don't care, you're actually seeing Louie. If you think you see me but I'm wearing red, and care way too much about everything and feel the need to tell you how everything works, you're actually seeing Huey. Oh and if you think you see me but I'm a girl, that's Webby, we're not related, we're just the same height and best friends."
twilightskey: (Smile)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-07-31 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Huey, Dewey, and Louie... those were interesting names, but Roxas nods, chuckling a bit.

"I think I can remember that. I actually met Dewey and Webby before."
couldabeenturbo: (the webster)

[personal profile] couldabeenturbo 2019-08-01 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Webby's my best friend. Isn't she neat? I know sometimes she's ... a little bit extra, but she grew up in a great big house with her granny and my sulky old Uncle as her only company until my mrothers and I moved in, too. So there's a lot of stuff she's never seen or done for herself."
twilightskey: (What are friends for?)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-08-02 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"She is pretty neat. Pretty funny, but neat." Oh, he's been on the receiving end of her excitable-ness, but rather than be put-off with it, Roxas finds it endearing.

"I think I can understand that feeling." Even though he's not bound to Sora's heart anymore, there's still a lot he hasn't seen or done for himself either. "I bet she's just enjoying having the chance to do things on her own now."
couldabeenturbo: (quack pack)

[personal profile] couldabeenturbo 2019-08-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"We kinda all are," Dewey shrugged. "I mean, my brothers and me ... and Webby. Usually her grandma and my uncles were always around... and my mom. But I just barely met her before I came here, so..."

He rubs at his arm, self-consciously. One of these days, he really does need to get around to telling the others about Della. As far as he can tell, he's the only one of the foursome who knows.

"Did you come from a place where people were always watching over you, too? I mean - sure, my family's great and we go on all kinds of adventures, but ... on the other hand there's a lot of -" A passable Scrooge imitation - "Dewey, dinnae TOUCH THA'. or whatever."
twilightskey: (I'll treasure this)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-08-06 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Roxas can't help but chuckle at the impression. "Sounds like he says it a lot, if you can imitate him like that." Was Dewey a bit of a troublemaker, then? Roxas is definitely amused by that.

"Well... yeah, sort of." He nods slowly. "The group I used to be a part of was like that. If I didn't do my assigned tasks, I'd get in trouble." That was... glossing over several details, sure, but his time with the Organization had been more bittersweet, given his situation.

"But it wasn't all that bad. I did meet my best friends there. So, I can see what you mean."
couldabeenturbo: (true story)

[personal profile] couldabeenturbo 2019-08-06 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Assigned tasks just sounds like a really fancy way of saying 'chores'," Dewey observed. "I hate chores. Well, maybe not all of them. Some of them, like 'make sure nothing in the garage has come to life this week' are good ones. We kinda tend to fight over that one." He beamed. "The best one was the sample of water from this hot spring in the Amazon ... it got knocked over when Launchpad crashed into the wall outside, and tipped onto an ant ... and the ant got to be fifty feet tall!"
twilightskey: (Oh?)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-08-07 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I guess they were kind of like chores." Those tasks really were just work, weren't they? Even if fighting the Heartless was an overall good thing, it was still for a less-than-noble cause in the end.

"Seriously?" Oh man, that did sound pretty wild. He could only imagine having to deal with a fifty-foot-tall ant. "How did you manage to defeat it??"
couldabeenturbo: (here's how it's gonna go)

[personal profile] couldabeenturbo 2019-08-14 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, we didn't!" He grinned. "We just bribed it with a bunch of Mrs. Beakley's crumpets and made a trail up the hill to Uncle Scrooge's money bin. Then while it was eating, Uncle Scrooge jumped down off the bin and put a harness on it. He rode it like a bucking bronco until it got tired, and then he sold it to the Duckburg Entomological Society. Now it's their mascot.
... I wanted to ride it, but Uncle Donald wouldn't let me."
Edited 2019-08-14 22:49 (UTC)
twilightskey: (That's right!)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-08-15 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Wow. That sounds like an adventure." Though, feeding a giant ant and then catching it alive was a lot more impressive than just destroying it. Though now that Dewey mentions it, he catches onto one detail.

"Uncle Scrooge... I think I know someone by that name in my world."
couldabeenturbo: (true story)

[personal profile] couldabeenturbo 2019-08-19 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Really? You know, I wouldn't be that surprised if he'd managed to go to another dimension. Gyro made some pretty crazy stuff. Like that time machine..."

Dewey drew his wand and sketched a picture of his uncle in the air. It hung in sketchy lines of sparkling blue for a moment before disappearing.

"Did he look like that?"
twilightskey: (Oh?)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-08-20 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Woah, that's cool. Roxas watched the sketch for as long as it hung in the air, nodding slowly.

"He looks a little different, but yeah, that looks like him. He opened up a bistrot in my home world, and it's really popular."
couldabeenturbo: (MOOD DETERMINATION)

[personal profile] couldabeenturbo 2019-08-21 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uncle Scrooge owns a restaurant? Whoa." Dewey grinned. "Of course it's popular. If anyone knows how to make money, it's him. He's the richest duck in the world, tee-em. I have to say tee-em because I'm pretty sure he trademarked it. You know. To make more money - see what I mean?!"
twilightskey: (What are friends for?)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-08-21 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That just makes Roxas chuckle.

"I get what you mean. A friend of mine said he also owned a nearby open-air movie theatre. I'm pretty sure he did that on purpose."
couldabeenturbo: (did we dew it?)

[personal profile] couldabeenturbo 2019-08-22 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"A drive-in? Awh, no fair! I wish mine owned one, those are awesome. ... So wait, if he's there, is there another me, too? And another Louie, or Huey, or Uncle Donald?"
twilightskey: (Oh?)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-08-26 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Well it's less a drive-in and more a walk-in..." There weren't really many vehicles in Twilight Town, save for the trams and the odd delivery truck. But Dewey's comment makes him perk up.

"Uncle Donald? Like, Donald Duck?"
couldabeenturbo: (Default)

[personal profile] couldabeenturbo 2019-08-28 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Dewey nodded, excitedly. This was, quite possibly, the coolest thing he'd ever heard. If there was another Uncle Donald and Uncle Scrooge out there, somewhere, there was another him, too, after all.

"Yeah, that's him! Kinda hard to understand, gets mad really easily... wears blue like all the cool people."
twilightskey: (That's right!)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-08-29 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, that sounds like him." Granted, Roxas has only briefly met Donald Duck in person, and the rest of his interactions were from Sora's memories, but he knows the blue-clad duck well enough.

"He can cast a pretty mean fireball, too."
couldabeenturbo: (make the knowledge stop)

[personal profile] couldabeenturbo 2019-09-05 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Dewey's eyes widened. "Whoa, wait, what?! You've seen my Uncle Donald make fire? ... Dude, that sounds like suuuuu-hu-huch a bad idea! He's the unluckiest guy ever!"
twilightskey: (What are friends for?)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-09-05 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, yeah. Fire, ice, lightning... he's a magician."

It's actually pretty funny to see Dewey panic at the notion of Donald using magic. Was it really that shocking?
couldabeenturbo: (make the knowledge stop)

[personal profile] couldabeenturbo 2019-09-05 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"A magician?! How has he not burned everything to the ground by now? That -I -!"

Dewey's mind had just about shorted out at the concept. He imagined Roxas' homeland looking a bit like the time he tried to bake a frozen pie in the microwave because he'd been impatient: charred in some places, frozen in others, and still actively on fire in a couple of strategic spots.
twilightskey: (I mean...)

[personal profile] twilightskey 2019-09-06 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Seriously? Is he really that clumsy in your world?"

That just sounds so different from the Donald he knows. Sure Donald has a temper and is known to rush into things, but burning everything to the ground by a wayward Fire spell?

"The Donald I know isn't that bad. Can get mad really quick, but not that clumsy."
