Diatu and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Sundering Midterm Results

It turns out that inadvertently summoning a horrible demon of immense and terrible power is still worth a passing grade: minus a lot of points for summoning the entirely wrong thing, but enough extra credit for successfully doing something so incredibly over-the-top to make up for it just a little. Meanwhile, something something power of running water, there's a demon imprisoned in the fountain, locked behind a massive magic circle of protection. Its flames neither evaporate the water nor are quenched by it, its lashing pointy tail stabs futilely at the stone in an attempt at petty vandalism, and otherwise it squats with otherworldly patience, claws drumming on its thighs. Till someone comes close, and then it calls out.

"Come! It is in my power to grant a wish to those who ask! Speak your desire and I shall grant it!"

Of course, the demon's ability to interpret wishes in an extremely jerkass manner is unparalleled by mortal malice. Still, this doesn't stop those students who think they're clever, can outwit a demon, have a background in legal jargon, or just want a turkey sandwich on rye bread with lettuce and mustard and-and they don’t want any zombie turkeys, they don’t want to turn into a turkey themselves, and they don’t want any other weird surprises. Needless to say, it has gone well for none of them -- but will you be the one to break the streak?

As for the circle, it is specifically warded against meddling, so no freeing the demon (accidentally or otherwise). Those who try to touch it or cross through it are promptly hurled with pinpoint accuracy into a nearby pond that has been put there explicitly for this purpose. (Except for Minamimoto -- if HE messes with it, his pants rip themselves off his body, wrap around his head, and haul him away while shouting the multiplication tables incorrectly.)

Potent Potables

Students work hard, and they play hard. Around midterms, this often takes the form of picnics with unreserved and unrestricted access to not just copious amounts of barbecue and potato salad, but also alcohol. From fine wines to barrels of beer to Liverpunch Whiskey, all sorts of offerings pop up at the parties that occupy space along the Walk or outside the Towers and Keep. Anastara, you see, has no legal drinking age; like most of the Tenscore Kingdoms, children grow up with alcohol, and generally its consumption is seen as no major event and no special treat. And it simply hasn't occurred to anyone that other cultures on other worlds might not function the same.

So enjoy a picnic, but also enjoy your free access to the wonders of intoxication.

Physical Challenge (aka the Prompt Least Likely To Cause Suffering)

Healthy body, healthy mind, the saying goes. Professors Trammel and Kith, adherents to this philosophy, have begun holding extracurricular exercise groups during the off hours. Students can learn proper weightlifting techniques for endurance as well as strength, jog around the campus in groups, play impromptu games that get the body moving, or even just practice slow stretches and what other worlds might call 'yoga'. Captain Lominia aggressively prowls the area, looking for people to scoop into bala-inlota exercises -- far more grueling and dangerous to succeed at if you don't want to be badgered onto the student team, but amazing workouts either way. And Headmaster Birony has set up a fairly extreme obstacle course straight out of a ninja challenge, overseen by Professor Porfsin from behind a cannon which magically flings beanbags at the participants. Those who make it through receive a pie from the Headmaster, who it turns out apparently can make a really darn tasty pie.

Research On the Sundered

With the arrival of the Sundered come those wizards engaged in research on their presence here, now set to investigate what brought them here and how to get them home. All newly-arrived Sundered students are asked to meet with representatives of the research team, to introduce themselves and relate what they will of their homes. In addition, the team requests samples of blood, hair, and skin -- carefully magically collected, and the researchers will sign in the presence of the Sundered a Glyphed contract that forbids them from using the samples for a purpose they know will be harmful. (They quite understand your reasons to be suspicious of this collection! And they will not compel anyone who refuses even given these conditions.)

This month, the researchers wish for you to engage in some sort of conflict, clash, or battle with your fellow Sundered. Spars with blunted weapons are the obvious choice, but games of strategy like go, shogi, or Fantastic Foils are also an option. A rousing debate will do as well -- anything that raises passion and energy. The team explains that they've found many of the Sundered who they interviewed have recently been through some sort of conflict or trouble on their world, and they wish to see if there's any magically-measurable aspect they share when challenged.

Wonders Await

Diatu Magicademy is open to you in all its glory. Except for the fountain. You can't swim in the fountain till they figure out how to banish the demon.

Moving away from the wall he'd been leaning against, his father's sword is in his hands as Yotsuyu approaches the thing. Fortunately, nothing happened as she stood there though he'd been ready.

"Not really sure daemons are fond of anything, have to wonder if they're like the ones back home."

This was coming from the guy who'd fought daemons aplenty. They were no picnic and harmful so the king had seen it and camped just far enough away unless it got loose.

"I would not know, but they do seem to be similar to the ones I have heard of on Hydaelyn..." Yotsuyu mused. "Not that I care if it is fond of me." That was her typical attitude, however. She'd made friends here, but friends with a demon? Absurd.

Then again, she wasn't very fond of it, either. On a hot summer day, the fountain cooled the breeze and sent a sprinkle of mist on the wind as well. Yotsuyu was hoping the blasted thing was gone before the days really got hot.

The demon scowled at her. Yotsuyu scowled right back at it.

"Hydaelyn?" For a moment the king tried to think if he knew that place, but then she kept doing..something. The daemon didn't seem happy and she didn't care that it wasn't happy, but still, he was kind of confused.

"So..are you two just going to have a staring contest?"

This isn't said in jest, this is a genuine question. Noctis was just keeping silent watch over it, and here she was almost antagonizing it.

Somehow it almost felt as if he was watching that warrior guy and lightning at first, all over again. Except, they weren't hostile with each other. Of course, he had gotten dragged into it by landing there.

"I have no intent of giving it what it desires, so...yes? Do you have another idea?"

After all, this man was the one practically guarding it--as if Yotsuyu was not technically doing something similar. She'd noted the sword, but since he wasn't brandishing it against her, he was not really a threat. So she did not offer him any, either.

She couldn't help the snark, though.

The dark head shook with a small laugh in his tone. "That's..up to you."

He wondered if by her staring at the thing long enough if somehow that would anger it enough to break free, but Noctis had watched her go up to the apparent restraints. He supposed if she was going to let it loose she would have.

And there was no way that he was going to tell this woman what to do.
darkenedmoon: (heavy sigh)

She just arched a brow at the man. Up to her? Yotsuyu was only here to make sure the demon's stuck where the instructors meant it to be.

"No. It is staying there, I am not going to do a kami-blessed thing to it." Except maybe make fun of it--no, no. She'd done a sufficiency of that, no need to actually provoke a voidsent.

"You are not going to attempt anything, are you? That is for your protection?" She gestured briefly at his sword with her fan, but he hadn't done anything yet, so...

Circling each other. Just like a pair of wary cats, seeing who might attempt the fish first. Though that demon was dangerous, and not a tasty trout for the taking, in truth.
fatedsacrifice: (Definitely not)

"As I said, I'm just here in case it gets out." And this doesn't involve him taunting a daemon with eye contact or whatever the case was.

Noctis himself has no intentions of quarreling with this woman or finding out what she was capable of. He's at less than half of his abilities, maybe even less than that if he really sat down and thought about it. So he's not taking on anyone or anything on that he doesn't have to. Coming here after dying and losing so many abilities had been quite the sobering experience. And while he had been given a wand like everyone else here, he would trust a weapon he was familiar with first before doing battle with something that he wasn't. A piece of wood just wasn't going to cut it.

He really doesn't understand the gesture at his father's sword and so the king just shrugged, folding his arms across his chest to look back at her.

"It's an old friend."

darkenedmoon: (excuse you?)

"If it gets out? What do you plan to do to it, pray tell?" Honestly, she'd be heading to get the Headmaster or one of the other professors at top speed. Yotsuyu might make a valiant attempt--she was good at her classes and the magic she'd picked up--but she wasn't entirely sure she could take on a voidsent by her lonesome. Yotsuyu had lost a bit of her arrogance since she'd arrived here.

Not that she acted like it. But sometimes, image was everything.

"Do you channel your magic through it? Somehow you do not strike me as a man who might enjoy...playing with a wand." Oh, that sounded horrible, and yet...it was completely honest. Yotsuyu wasn't much given to flirting any more.
fatedsacrifice: (Uhm)

[personal profile] fatedsacrifice 2019-06-19 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
He shrugged. "If it gets out someone has to try and slow it before it rampages unchecked to harm innocent people."

Noctis wasn't sure he could take on this thing by himself with his abilities mostly gone, but as a protector of the people, he still felt as if he should try and do something to give innocent people time to get out of the way.

And at the last part, he felt like his face was turning red. Surely this woman didn't mean..what it sounded like. So the king's hand went up through his hair, much like it had when Kuja commented on his age. He wished with everything he had that Ignis was here to defer to as he had in Altissia when he didn't know what to say.

"Haven't..had the time."
darkenedmoon: (as innocent as it gets)

[personal profile] darkenedmoon 2019-06-20 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, you've not been here long, I think I'd have seen you before now." At least she wasn't twisting the knife. Not that Yotsuyu had intended there to be a knife at all. She nodded as he claimed he'd slow the demon down before it harmed innocents. It made him rise in her estimation.

Yotsuyu did realize that the reason he was blushing was...probably due to her, but it was too late to take back her words. And why should she? She'd only been honest!

"No, no, I mean that I believe it is entirely possible to use your sword as a wand. I've no wand either, you see. I use a fan."

It seemed entirely simple enough, as she drew it from her sleeve, but when she spread it, she peeled back a bit of silk to show that the vanes of the thing were metal.

"I use this as my focus. It is something I am more familiar with than any of the trappings of magic from here, or my world, and so I use this."
fatedsacrifice: (What are you getting at?)

[personal profile] fatedsacrifice 2019-06-21 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The king shook his head in answer to her question about him being here long. Funny thing was that he got rid of the Ring of the Lucii and now had another ring.

He turned to listen to her explanation about the fan and was inwardly relieved that he had been wrong about how she'd meant her comment. But Noctis was definitely listening. The headmaster had seemed pretty insistent that a wand was the way to go with magic here so it was good to learn something new.

Looking at the fan, blue eyes took note of what was being said. Well if she could do that with her fan, maybe he could use his father's sword to channel magic. It was definitely worth a try.

So the king nodded to what she said. "You sound like an advisor." Really, that's how she was coming across to him which wasn't a bad thing at all. And what she said really helped him out too.
darkenedmoon: (Amused)

[personal profile] darkenedmoon 2019-06-22 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
An advisor? Yotsuyu had never particularly thought of herself as that. Certainly she knew a few things, and with everything she'd done in the past...disbursing information so that others did not repeat her mistakes only seemed like the easiest way to atone.

But if she were staying here, as she planned? That might be a good way to occupy herself.

"I had not thought of that, but if it helps you at all, you may take my advice. And do not forget to alter it to suit you, if I am close and yet you find a good way to add to it," Yotsuyu said, chuckling to herself.
fatedsacrifice: (Lost in thought)

[personal profile] fatedsacrifice 2019-06-24 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well at least they seemed to be on better terms, and Noctis nodded. Magic worked differently here certainly. But with the lady's information, he would be able to work on something to occupy his time while he waited to go home.

And she was laughing now so that was a good sign. He sighed and blue eyes stayed trained on the daemon. It didn't seem like she was going anywhere, so Noctis folded his arms back across his chest.

"Then, in that case, thanks for the advice."

darkenedmoon: (smile or smirk?)

[personal profile] darkenedmoon 2019-07-04 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"You are quite welcome. Might I have your name?" She'd gotten so involved in their snarking at each other, she'd failed to ask.

"My name is Yotsuyu goe Brutus. 'Tis a pleasure to make your acquaintance." She might've been snarky, and perhaps so was he, but, well. That sort of thing tended to make her like him better. She never had been fond of the type to simply roll over.
fatedsacrifice: (Smirking)

[personal profile] fatedsacrifice 2019-07-07 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
Another nod at the lady who'd given him some pretty useful advice.

"Noctis." And he recalled how he'd once introduced himself to people saying he was the Prince of Lucis and King of Fishing, but that was in the other world where he'd met Kuja.

"Nice to meet you Yotsuyu."

Well now he had her name and she had his. That was a good thing, right? So he couldn't help a tiny bit of a smirk at the person who'd helped him out.
