Here's One For Free

Something about the fall brings out the best in cooks, chefs, and vendors across Anastara, a flurry and frenzy of cooking, experimenting, and tasting that goes miles towards filling bellies left hungry by the hard work of comfortable days and the encroaching chill of cool nights. Bread and bread-relatives in particular take center stage this year, with pretzels, hoagies, buns, and pies coming out in immense quantity.

The reason? Cheap cheap grain from the Efrecka Principality, where the court wizard advanced agriculture by leaps and bounds through the simple act of blessing the rains. In fact, such is the bounty that numerous restaurants, street vendors, and stall merchants have begun offering samples to the public, under the not-at-all-alarming principle of "the first one is free". And while this technique is actually producing dividends (unlike previous tactics of "an offer you can't refuse" and "those are nice kneecaps, it'd be a shame if someone broke them because you didn't buy a knave sandwich"), no one quite accounted for the interaction of magic-infused grain and whatever weirdness courses through the Sundered.

So what happens? Well, ever heard of "potion miscibility" rules? Maybe you start breathing fire or acid. Maybe you're terribly flatulent, dizzy, confused, or inexplicably forgotten by gravity. Maybe something wonderful happens and you sprout awesome wings. Maybe something terrible happens and you sprout awesome wings from your nostrils. Whatever the case, you're on an adventure now, for however long this lasts...

What Do I Look Like, A Charity Case?

Unlike the vast majority of students, the Sundered don't come to the school with a lot of resources and more on the way from home as needed. Though by no means does anyone look down on them for this, the Magicademy recognizes this as an unfortunate disadvantage. After all, not every Sundered is suited for gainful employment in Anastara -- some of them look like dragons, for example, and some of them have the social graces of a pie to the face, if the pie was full of poo and artificial waffles.

So the Magicademy has offered to pay the Sundered a fair and decent wage for various jobs around the school. Groundskeeping, for example, has fallen behind while Meliandre Tomekin has reluctantly taken her golem servitors offline for a much needed dezanyfication. Students can earn their way by wrangling leaves and plants trying to get ready for winter. For the more prideful, pairs of Sundered can give tours of the facilities to prospective students and their families. Headmaster Birony has an opening for a test dummy, if you feel life is no longer worth living. Whatever your flavor of labor, you can find a way to make some extra dough. Or money, since the dough is probably magical and dangerous as detailed one prompt up.

I Threw It On the Ground

Most magic classes have reached a point in their curriculum where they address utilizing the local environment for practical and aesthetic effect in spellcasting. Discovery, for example, addresses the creation of material half-in, half-out of objects, which is easily practiced by conjuring a plant of some sort that is properly rooted. Fantastics covers illusion interactions with terrain, as well as style, so students of that art find themselves conjuring flashes and fires that erupt upwards from the ground and also appear to affect the environment. Modification concerns itself with properly accounting for environmental barriers, such as constraints posed by the floor. And Glyphics teaches how to bind these spells into fanciful objects, like glass spheres that shattered and release their spell when smashed at the feet of the wizard in question.

So as part of classes, and part of homework, aspiring wizards are casting, conjuring, creating, and changing objects with dramatic gestures and waving wands, all focused on the ground in front of them. Needless to say, some results are particularly spectacular. A geyser of water? A rock the size of a building? Blinding light? Accidentally Modifying your partner's pants? The sky's the limit, and we mean that literally, because you probably don't have the magical wherewithal to achieve escape velocity yet.

I'm An Adult

Particularly concerned with the behavior of some of the latest Sundered, he's not pointing any fingers but he's getting a little tired of certain students coming up with wacky variants on his House's name, Professor Trammel has taken it upon himself to set up optional deportment and courtesy classes. Well, 'optional' unless you're in Gekronus Maius, since he can order you all to attend, and very, very, uncomfortably encouraged by everyone else for the other Sundered.

Needless to say, much of these courses goes over poorly with the student body, but one section in particularly has an unusually strong grip: Style. No one, absolutely no one, can deny that Professor Trammel has and understands style, and he is exceptionally willing to share that benefit with you. The cut of suits, the length of dresses, the proper fit of vests, the flow of capes and cloaks, the power of iconic appearances and distinct silhouettes... he is a master of all these things, and the spells necessary to achieve them.

Already, many students are going about campus looking far more snappy than ever before. Is this the time to take on a new look? Or maybe you have an old one from home you'd like to recreate? Could his advice on self-care benefit you? Or maybe you're just determined not to change...

The moral of this story is...

YOU CAN'T TRUST THE SYSTEM.

“Probably the equivalent of trying not to sneeze in public, I guess,” Harry tries to give an analogy to how much force/magic energy is needed to create a pillar.

He is aware that maybe it could be the worst analogy he could come up with, but that’s the best he could bring up while people are talking about the whole pillar incident.

"Hmmm..." A theory is brewing in Noa's mind, which isn't surprising (The boy would definitely have leaned Ravenclaw if he was in Harry's world), but it takes a bit before it properly forms.

"I wonder...try to slow, hold back the force a bit; I'm wondering if we'd see a gradual growth of the pillar, something you could stop at any point."

“Perhaps I can try to slow it down and see happens if I do,” he is considering to try that suggestion out and see for himself.

He then takes a deep breath, points his wand towards the ground, mutters some words, holds the force back, and proceeds to cast the spell to form the pillar as he holds back the energy a little big.

While he is casting the spell, the pillar begins to slow arise from the ground. His eyes widen in amazement as he sees the pillar being formed but not as fast compared to the one he initially made.

Noa nods- and soon enough is watching the pillar rise. Nodding somewhat more furiously, he grins. "...Perfect- is it easy enough to stop it?" he asks, watching the pillar. If so, then waist-high pillar should be easy to pull of!

“They say that it is easy to stop it according to the lesson,” he answers as he monitors the pillar’s progression, once it reaches the desired height, he immediately says ‘Stop!’ and the pillar manages to stop growing before it got out of control.

“Phew! Managed to pull it off,” he pulls out a sigh of relief.

"Hmhm~! I'm rather pleased that advice worked," Noa hums, though his grin gives away the actual excitement.

"Hm. I suppose I should be practicing my own attempts now..." he mutters, slowly playing a few notes on his ocarina. After a couple bits of experimentation- which seem to have nothing for their results- the pillar appears...to change.

It rises with a few rising notes- lowers with a few lower notes, even seeming to go below the desired level that Harry stopped it at. A bead of sweat is on Noa's brow, but he seems rather pleased with how this is working out.

Harry is watching how the notes from Noa’s ocarina manage to change the pillar’s appearance in sheer awe. The young wizard is pretty impressed to say the least. It reminds him a lot of Transfiguration classes he has taken with Professor McGonagall and he is still trying to get reacquaint himself with his world’s magic after months spent on using Avalon’s magic in lieu of said magic.

“Wow, this is really amazing how these musical notes affected the way things would look like,” he tells Noa after seeing the changes in the pillar.

[personal profile] noasark 2021-09-25 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
The notes cease-

The pillar returns to its natural height.

Noa gives out a small sigh of exhaustion, before beaming. "Hmhmhm~ That's how Fantastics function, after all; it's illusion, built into the play of sound- high notes, low notes...as long as I can force that association, it should work."
phoenixwiz: (Sneaky Little Fella)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2021-09-25 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
“So it is about making illusions with sound and music? That sounds pretty brilliant: I don’t think that there is similar magic I can find in my world or in Avalon,” he replies after the pillar returns back to its normal height.

Getting introduced to various magic branches of Anastara has him very intrigued to look into, even if some of them don’t fall in within his House subjects. He could definitely read up on them in the library within his free time real soon.

"Precisely that! I've had people suggest I use Fantastics for clothing and similar, which is ridiculous....it would hardly last long," he huffs. "Honestly I can't even think of anything from fiction that lines up with some of the magic schools here- it's been very interesting, dipping into the other options."
phoenixwiz: (When He Smiles)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2021-09-27 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
“I can see why: I have signed for some electives for this term such as Alchemy and Glyphics, they are somewhat similar to some forms of magic in my world,” Harry nods in return, “Why would people want to use Fantastics onto clothes?”
noasark: (Well that didn't work)

[personal profile] noasark 2021-09-28 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah, glyphics is a good one, if a little short...it's well worth it, and it's easy to carry over through with certain magics," he hums. Modification comes to mind...

And ah- "The idea was apparently that I could make my clothes seem better than they are...I might have some pride in my appearance, but with everything here, and the budget we're restricted to, it isn't worth it to actually invest in anything...high class," he scoffs. "...Like I said though, Fantastics wouldn't last. Modification Glyphs or similar however..."
phoenixwiz: (When He Smiles)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2021-09-29 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
“Yeah, that is relatable: back in Avalon, I had to deal with managing my salary and savings account as frugally as I can,” Harry nods in a relatable mood, “In fact, I was staying at an inn like many otherworlders upon arriving in Avalon until a couple of months ago when I was able to save enough to move out of there and into a new place to stay in.”

“That does sound like an intriguing experiment to look into. I am curious to see Modification Glyphs in action someday.”
noasark: (:3)

[personal profile] noasark 2021-10-01 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
"It's strange, but not even a business degree has helped here..." Hm. "...then again perhaps not, all of that training was assuming I'd inherit a company, not start from scratch..."

His brows are furrowed, as if a fairly unbalanced reality of the world has just now presented itself. WHOOPS!

He refocuses on something that he can actually be happy about. Like glyphics! "Hmm~ I'd be happy to invite you along to a workshop for it- Glyphics should work well for any wrote magic- Fantastics won't go well, but something like Discovery stands to do well with it too, among others. I could probably even stretch it into Thaumaturgy with the right research~"
phoenixwiz: (Sneaky Little Fella)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2021-10-01 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
“That sounds like a brilliant idea, Noa. I would love to take part of the Glyphics workshop as well,” Harry is getting really excited right now, his eyes light up in glee, “I could be able to learn a couple of tips from there and have a good time as well.”
noasark: (:3)

[personal profile] noasark 2021-10-02 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Just a workshop?" he jokes, before snorting. "Well, if you're already signed up for your electives that's all you can do I suppose... ...Mnh, in that case, I'll have to look into the times and locations for you, won't I~?"
phoenixwiz: (When He Smiles)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2021-10-02 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
He is actually quite happy to hear it since he has been very busy that he may gotten a little forgetful in some things at the moment and he would love to learn more about Glyphics as well.

“That definitely sounds like a good idea, Noa. I really appreciate the help too,” he thanks him with a grateful heart, “I have gotten so busy lately that I think that I must have lost track of some things at the moment, especially with working on a part time job in campus.”
noasark: (Well that didn't work)

[personal profile] noasark 2021-10-03 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
"It's best to get settled before going for too much, you're right- even after two years here, things can take me off guard," he mutters, "So you can imagine what would probably happen without that grounding force."
phoenixwiz: (We Need to Talk)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2021-10-03 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
“Yeah, that is true: juggling multiple things can be stressful at times and I’ve only been in the school for less than a month or two so far,” he admits to Noa as he twirls his wand casually but hasn’t caused a spell misfire again, “Maybe I just need to slow down and take things a little slowly at a time.”

He feels like he was becoming a little bit like Hermione in Third Year (how ironic that he, a guy who was trying to pass and survive school, is slowly turning into a mini Hermione in Diatu) where she took in multiple classes in the same time schedule and it does began to wear her down throughout the year before deciding not to repeat that again.

"Probably the best idea. Autumn is a good time for it, though- there's plenty of good walking trails if you know where to go." Plenty is still a small number by some standards of course, but that's how it is with floating islands.
phoenixwiz: (When He Smiles)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2021-10-06 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
“Hm, I could definitely try to give the walking trials a try,” Harry replies, “I haven’t been exploring the city that since I got here, so I will try to find time to take a walking trip within my schedule soon.”
noasark: (wat)

[personal profile] noasark 2021-10-06 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hopefully sooner rather than later- if you can't find space now, you're going to really feel it in exam season."
phoenixwiz: (When He Smiles)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2021-10-07 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
“Yeah, I think so as well. I really need to get better in managing my schedule or I’ll get tired out in the end. No one wants to push themselves too hard in their studies to the point of exhaustion.”
noasark: (:3)

[personal profile] noasark 2021-10-07 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The boy nodded, before pausing to glance behind him. Speaking of schedules, time might be running out. "...Hm. My class is setting up to move on," he muttered, noting the sudden quiet in the place of experimental music playing. "We'll have to compare schedules later, if we remember it then."
phoenixwiz: (Confidence Within)

[personal profile] phoenixwiz 2021-10-07 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
“Yeah, we can do that some time later. My class is about to head for another subject as well, so we could meet up later after school is done for the day,” Harry agrees as he puts his stuff into his magical backpack and slings it against his back.

(no subject)
