Orientation Week/Magic Mayhem

The campus of Diatu Magicademy stretches out before you, confused and chaotic and surging with energy. Where are you headed? To your dorm or suite, to get settled? Maybe you need some food now? Wherever you head off to as your first stop, you have to deal with the snow. Helpful or proud students are passing out various magical remedies to get you where you need to be -- umbrellas with a nasty tendency to dump snow directly onto other people nearby, an iron tube that projects fire but appears to have no off switch, snowshoes that keep you slightly too high off the snow and thus provide no friction for stopping...

Familiar Follies

Familiars do not harass or harm each other as a rule -- but that doesn't mean they have no pecking order, and the week of Orientation finds them all jockeying for status and position as suits them. This can take the form of pranks, displays, competitions, or simple physical assertiveness towards each other. The goal is simply to be seen as superior by the student body. New wizards especially may find themselves surprised at this behavior of their familiars...

Curious, Webby leaned forward, hands behind her back.

"Is there any way I can help you? I know we're probably from different places, so I don't know much about yours and you don't know much about mine... but it never hurts to have an extra pair of hands!"

Although she did pause for thought and wondered if, with magic, you COULD get an extra pair of hands.

V often had another pair of hands, or rather, one extra hand, through magic. "Lack of access to my Bugsby's Cat-Retrieving Hand spell has in fact worked against me already since arriving here," V agreed. "However when it comes to scribing facts into a book, unless this world has insane and non-sensical laws that say that a single word needs seven pages to itself and that it is the only thing I am allowed to scribe that day, I suspect I can handle the writing on my own."

Willard smacked V's face.

Oh. Right. "Though I appreciate the offer." Manners were a thing that V was working on, or trying to work on.

Thankfully Webby's curiosity was always stronger than any ability to perceive being insulted. "So magic's a way bigger deal in your world? That's so cool!"

"I am a Wizard of a rather high level and even the Bard has proven himself capable of some rather basic cantrips, so I would say that magic is in fact, as you put it, a big deal on my plane. Yes. Even divine magic that should hardly qualify does in fact do so."

Oooh, that sounded really impressive! She even claps a bit in awe. "So you've already got a head start with all this! Way to go, good for you!"

V is something less than impressed with Webby's awe. "Yes, I have spent hundreds of years of arcane lore to have something of a head start here," V said, dryly. "Good for me."

Sorry, sarcasm is not one of her specialties. "Do you have anything that you're extra good at? Like animals, or potions, or spells?"

"Of course. I excel in spells primarily, though I have an expansive background of identifying, creating, and using potions. As for animals, I have experience with my familiar at home, Blackwing, as well as with Willard, here. And as most Wizards of sufficient level do, I have Charm Animal in my spell book."

Charm Animal mostly being used to irritate a certain Halfling these days, but also useful for when one is the subject of a Baleful Polymorph.

Consider her hooked, V. She wants to know everything and anything.

"Oooh, what's a Charm Animal? Is it cute? Does it distract your enemies with hugs?"

"It charms an animal to do my bidding for a limited duration of time. It is much like charm person, but for different targets."

"Oooh, so you can charm animals into hugging you!" This is a girl who likes hugs. "That sounds super useful! What's the biggest thing you've ever charmed?"

Sure... they could go with hugging. And... with V. the PG version of what V used to use the spell for, anyway. But in V's defence, Belkar totally deserved it.

"Once... a juvenile black dragon." V's voice fell some, there. That... had been the start of a chain of events only recently finished. Or so V thought.

"Wait. Was that just a cut away panel?" V might be a little alarmed, just now.

Since Webby had no idea what a cut away panel was, she focused on what she did know - dragons! "Wow,a huge dragon? And you charmed it? You're so super amazing! I wish I could've seen it!"

"Yes well, at the time it was rather impressive, I do find reasons to wish that I had dealt with the situation a little better than I had, however."

... Well. You can't say that and expect her not to ask, along with adorable inquisitive head-tilt.

"Oh? How come?"

"The Dragon's mother came recently looking for revenge, which she chose to take upon my own young, rather than upon my person."

Now stop asking.

Even someone emotionally stunted as Webby knew when to pull the plug on a conversation. Her eyes darted around, trying to think of how to resolve this.

"... Can I ask you for advice on magic stuff sometime?"

V considered than nodded. "So long as this is not a case where you ask me if you can, and then later when you level up claim that you have been studying with me so that you can take a level of Wizard without putting in the effort, then yes."

Webby's eyes widen at such an insinuation. "No way! I'd never do that!" Not because she's insulted at the accusation, but because what an awful thing for one person to do to another! "If someone puts in the hard work, they deserve the credit! I'd tell everyone and anyone that you helped me!"

"That was not quite what I meant, but thank you. There was a time during a long rest that we were all deciding what to do with the experience we had gained, and the Bard told everyone that he was planning to take a level of Wizard, and that he could do so because it would be retroactively presumed that he had been studying with me the whole time, even though he very much had not been. He has since changed his mind and is focusing on a combination of Bard and the prestige class Dashing Swordsman, but since that point I have been helping him with his Bardic Illusions, and he is actually growing in skill, somewhat."

Webby... just barely understood what any of that meant.

"... So he is a good guy or a jerk?"

"You say it as though someone couldn't be both, simultaneously." V, for example.

Webby has to think about that one, cupping her beak.

"... Huh. I guess they can be... Sometimes the boys can be mean, but in the end, they'll always do the right thing." Though with Louie that tended to take some extra nudging.

V nodded simply. "My point exactly."

"See, you're teaching me new stuff already!" Webby said with plenty of cheer. "This is going to work out perfectly!"
