Orientation Week/Magic Mayhem

The campus of Diatu Magicademy stretches out before you, confused and chaotic and surging with energy. Where are you headed? To your dorm or suite, to get settled? Maybe you need some food now? Wherever you head off to as your first stop, you have to deal with the snow. Helpful or proud students are passing out various magical remedies to get you where you need to be -- umbrellas with a nasty tendency to dump snow directly onto other people nearby, an iron tube that projects fire but appears to have no off switch, snowshoes that keep you slightly too high off the snow and thus provide no friction for stopping...

Familiar Follies

Familiars do not harass or harm each other as a rule -- but that doesn't mean they have no pecking order, and the week of Orientation finds them all jockeying for status and position as suits them. This can take the form of pranks, displays, competitions, or simple physical assertiveness towards each other. The goal is simply to be seen as superior by the student body. New wizards especially may find themselves surprised at this behavior of their familiars...

Water? [Yotsuyu is mystified by this, brows furrowing, but then the man continues, she just nods.]

Yes. They are, it seems, though I have no idea what the draw is. At least that means I am likely too old to participate.

[She snorts in amusement, here. She might be persuaded to watch, but to play? No. No thank you!]

[Jecht laughs, loud and brash, with his head tipped back.] No way! I ain't lettin' age stop me, and there's no way you got years on me!

Perhaps not, but I've little skill for that sort of gaming.

[Plus, her dignity would likely not allow it. Though she allows a smile to touch her lips, briefly.]

Though if you do intend to go through with it, perhaps I shall come watch.

[Jecht winks, pointing a finger-gun her way.] Show up and I'll score a point in your name.

[Her eyes narrow at that, and Yotsuyu cannot help but smirk, then.

A name you still don't know, hm?

[Nor is she about to help him out, here. It's all she can do to not laugh, really. Though there's definitely a hint of challenge in her demeanor. She's cowed better men than Jecht, after all.]

[Jecht lets out a groan, shifting his weight to his left leg.]

That was kinda your cue to tell me.

Pity, I'm somewhat lacking as an actress. The theater was never my forte.

[Not that she's terribly bad at acting--certain talents of hers do demand it, after all--but there's a certain sadistic little part of her that's enjoying watching this man twist in the wind, so to speak.]

Besides, you act as if I should know you. Pray tell, why is that?

Ha, you will! Once I take the world by storm like I did back in Zanarkand, and people are crowding around for my autograph and swooning at my smile, then you can say you knew me back when!

[No small ego on Jecht, a fact he's proud of. Proud because it means he can put aside all the pain and maturity he'd faced the past decade of his so-called life, and just... be, again.]

Big words. Lots of air, until you back it up, eh?

[Yotsuyu's impression is that he's playing her game; she's not about to give in and tell him her name. Offers of goal-scoring for her aside, she has her pride. And a whole lot of it. She crosses her arms, and if she had her pipe, she'd probably blow smoke in his face, since to her, he's doing the same. Simply without any tobacco products, and with more hot air.]

Perhaps you ought to leave bala-inlota to the children, and save yourself the potential for embarrassment?

Heh. [Girl's got sass for days, huh? Jecht runs a hand through his hair lazily.] Yeah, you're right about one thing. Haven't proved anything yet, huh? But I will. You wait and see. Believe me or be a skeptic, it'll all come out in the sphere. Or, uh, field, I guess.

I suppose it shall, then. Though if I'm supposed to cheer, I have a difficult time knowing who it is I am to cheer for. You act as if I should know you, as I've said, but I have no idea who you are.

[Not that he has any clue who she is either--something Yotsuyu is likely thankful for--but she can't help but poke at him one more time. She needs to come off with a sense of triumph, small as it might be, here. ]

The name's Jecht. But if it's in the blitz sphere, you're looking at the Great Jecht.

[He folds his arms at that, grinning like an arrogant bastard who's earned his pride. ]

Great Jecht? I only have your word for that, you know. [Yotsuyu can't help but smirk, there, eyes glittering. That alone belies her amusement.]

Yotsuyu goe Brutus. Also known as the Witch of Doma. [She's used that moniker here before, so it matters little that Jecht now knows it. If he was smart, he'd take that as a warning, but that might be a stretch, at best. Yotsuyu lifts a hand to run her fingers along her snake's head, but Gosetsu seems to be quiescent, still. Not difficult when he's snuggled around her neck, under the curtain of her hair. Probably perfectly warm, too. ]

House Purifeul, not that it matters. It isn't as if I live in the dorm, after all.

Witch of Doma? That literal? [Because she looks a lot like he'd expect a witch to look like, except for lacking a pointy hat. Okay, a hot witch, not one of those "warts and green skin and scraggly hair" witches, but whatever.]

[Oh yeah, uh, houses are a thing, huh?] Yeah, I'm in Ka but they put me in a suite instead too.

Literal? [Yotsuyu smirks, and it's an effort to not laugh. But is it? Magic only came to her here, and she was resolutely normal back on Hydaelyn. Is that something she wants to admit to, though?]

I think not. It was more my attitude, I suppose, that I was dubbed so. I only gained magic when I arrived here.

And I suppose that is because compared to the usual student body, we are decidedly out of our element, eh? It would be quite unusual to house adults among youngsters.

[And maybe not good, for some...She grimaces at the idea. ]

You ain't kidding. Sorta feel like I'm in a daycare center here. [Okay, that's an exaggeration. A lot of these kids are really adults, by any state of affairs.] But I'm used to that. Get newbies on the team and they come in cold and young, but that doesn't mean they play worse for their age.

I had thought that it was...more typical to teach youngsters when they were young? [She arches a brow here, lips twitching--but then she permits herself a smile, however small.]

As if I have had anything to do with other children since I was a child myself. But I see some truth in your statement.

Just saying, you and me, we're not exactly school-age by your normal standards. Though maybe you could fool 'em if you played your cards right. [Yotsuyu might be older, but he's thinking she wouldn't at all look it if not for that expression she seems to be constantly sporting. Not like him, who you couldn't mistake for a kid no matter what.]

If that isn't the largest load of horsebird turds I have heard in a while. [Though she laughs again at that, and the laugh is more real now, at least.]

But true, you and I are hardly school age. I would say it was sort of demeaning, save for the fact I do not want to be destroyed by my own magic, eh?

[She pauses, then, and makes a face, muttering.] Though I suppose that has already happened once...though the magic was borrowed, and not truly mine.

Hey... it's better that showing up here stops whatever power we got.

[A little serious on his own end too, now. The place didn't need Sin crashing around and screwing everything up. And if he could change...]

[Yeah, he's glad he can't.]

I had no power of my own. [ And she shrugs, then, her laughter bitter now.] Nothing to start, and then the cold-blooded little worm who called himself my brother gave me an artifact to summon an eikon...and the crystals with which to power it...

[Yotsuyu shakes her head.] The mirror is not here, and I can only hope the merciful gods who brought me here decide to pass over Asahi as undeserving.

Summoning. Heh. They got that where you're from, huh? [Boy, that hits close to home. Except what the heck's an 'eye-con'?]

Yes. They do. The beast tribes summon eikons--they call them 'primals'--in their desperation. And then, usually, the Warrior of Light cuts them down, because they are dangerous and vengeful...

[And there, Yotsuyu goes silent, looking away.]

As I was.

Around Spira... they summon Aeons. And people rely on summoners, they're heroes and people to look up to. The Aeons are on people's sides.

[Must be different things, then. Same term of summoning, but way different results.]

In Eorzea, they summon egi...that sounds much the same. There is a young man here who I believe had those talents--he came from Hydaelyn, as I did. Alphinaud Leveilleur. As for me, I lived in the Garlean Empire, and they looked down upon summoning. And any other magic, as well, for those who came from there, they had no magic of their own to speak of.

[Yotsuyu assumes that Jecht missed what she'd said, but she really has no desire to go over it again, or go into it at length if she doesn't have to. She's touched on it before with others, and certainly Alphinaud knows practically all anyone might want to know about her. But she'd be damned if she broke the truce. She had her pride in that, at least.]
