February Event and Intro Log
Orientation Week/Magic Mayhem
The campus of Diatu Magicademy stretches out before you, confused and chaotic and surging with energy. Where are you headed? To your dorm or suite, to get settled? Maybe you need some food now? Wherever you head off to as your first stop, you have to deal with the snow. Helpful or proud students are passing out various magical remedies to get you where you need to be -- umbrellas with a nasty tendency to dump snow directly onto other people nearby, an iron tube that projects fire but appears to have no off switch, snowshoes that keep you slightly too high off the snow and thus provide no friction for stopping...
Familiar Follies
Familiars do not harass or harm each other as a rule -- but that doesn't mean they have no pecking order, and the week of Orientation finds them all jockeying for status and position as suits them. This can take the form of pranks, displays, competitions, or simple physical assertiveness towards each other. The goal is simply to be seen as superior by the student body. New wizards especially may find themselves surprised at this behavior of their familiars...
Research On the Sundered
With the arrival of the Sundered come those wizards engaged in research on their presence here, now set to investigate what brought them here and how to get them home. All Sundered students are asked to meet with representatives of the research team, to introduce themselves and relate what they will of their homes. In addition, the team requests samples of blood, hair, and skin -- carefully magically collected, and the researchers will sign in the presence of the Sundered a Glyphed contract that forbids them from using the samples for a purpose they know will be harmful. (They quite understand your reasons to be suspicious of this collection! And they will not compel anyone who refuses even given these conditions.)
Furthermore, they request to perform a few spells on you for testing purposes. It is, quite regrettably, possible that if you consent to this testing, you will come away with a temporary side effect -- a slight change of hair color, traveling two steps for every one you take, one hand moving about a second behind the arm it should be attached to, or being ridden by a penguin. No need to worry, these changes won't last more than a day!

Might you consider ridding yourself of those snow shoes...? [She asks with gentle sincerity, not even a drop of sarcasm in her voice.] If I am permitted to be so frank, it would seem that trudging through the snow banks may be a more effective means of getting to our destinations, rather than attempting to make use of these offerings.

I do believe you may be right about that... I doubt my ability to take a single step properly in these.
[That said, how to remove them now that he's in this awkward position... Sitting back down is probably the best course of action, but he's going to attempt to slowly lower himself, trying to steady his balance, to see if he can discard them without having to do so.]

But, snow is slippery. Especially when one was ill-dressed in preparation for this sort of climate, having been in a coastal town before being whisked to this world; heels were more unwieldy than they already were when each step leads to sinking knee-deep into snow. A misstep sliding further than she'd like, and Takane herself loses her footing.]
Ah.
[Aaaaand they're falling. They Tried.]

Thankfully, the snow does the same for him somewhat. He winces at the impact, but all things considered, it could have been much worse. Nonetheless, it is his fault that she was dragged into this.]
I'm terribly sorry about this... Are you all right?

Hm, warm. It actually reminds her that while they were mostly unharmed, they're now more covered in snow and as a result, even more cold. Herself, especially. She really hopes they'll provide a coat and other weather-adequate clothing, free of random magical pranks... Despite the instinct to shiver a bit, she's doing well in maintaining her usual decorum.
At his question, she raises her upper body slightly by pushing herself off the ground with her free hand, in order to respond with a reassuring, albeit sheepish smile, a nonverbal indication that apologies were not needed. What's personal space?]
With thanks to you, I am. I saw to it that your tomes are unharmed as well. [She's quite proud of herself.] While we're already down, I suppose you're in optimal circumstances to have those mischievous things away with now. Otherwise, I believe we may spend the rest of the day taking turns at asking one another if we are all right.
[A soft giggle ends her last sentence, still able to find enough levity to joke around with a light heart despite the frustrating turns of misfortune that insists on befalling them.]

[He says in regards to her protecting his books, but he is rather touched by the sentiment nonetheless. In fact, this whole situation... gives him cause to blush. Thankfully, the chill in the air makes the color of his cheeks a natural response, but that doesn't stop him from feeling self-conscious about it. When she mentions the snowshoes again, however, it takes his mind off of such things.]
Ah, you are correct. [He pushes himself back a bit to allow himself room to do so before working to remove them.] Now all that remains of the matter is what to do with such worthless rubbish. I can't imagine anyone would have an actual use for them... but I can't very well leave them here.
[Oh well. Once both of them are off, he is able to comfortably get to his feet, finally, and he adds the snowshoes to his small pile of belongings to carry with him. After he's sure that they are secured, he holds his free hand out to offer assistance should she need any.]
We should perhaps head back to the main hall for now... At least, until our clothes can dry.

Minding her etiquette as always, she nods and accepts the offered hand, helping herself to her feet. Yes, the main hall may be the best course of action, for the time being. Seeing that he has quite the heavy load to carry, so she opts to hold onto the books she had picked up on his behalf.]
One's trash is another man's treasure. Waste not, want not. These are commonly used idioms that sum up an aspect of the culture towards material objects the country I was residing in, before I had been whisked to this world. With a bit of creativity and time, perhaps an opportunity or bout of inspiration shall arise where they will be of more value.
