October Event Log
| Fall Cleaning
The faculty barely bat an eye as they direct students to get outside quickly. "Fall cleaning," they explain wearily to those students who have never experienced this phenomenon. Older students offer their own explanation as they move: at some point every fall the buildings of the Magicademy rearrange themselves so the cleaning golems can repair their foundations, tend to the ground around them, keep them from sinking into the caverns, that sort of thing. Totally harmless. Well, until you realize no one knows where your House tower went. Or till you need to get to class promptly except Kedrigan Hall is in the middle of a lake somehow. Or till the Library of Starchime is down in the middle of the lab caverns and you have to try to study while students practice magic in the aisles. But it's okay! This will only last for a couple of days! You can get by, right?
It's one of the nicer times you could ask for.
Headmaster Birony has found out about Halloween. Diatu Magicademy is nothing but orange and black now. Carved pumpkins wander the campus and aggressively pose for anyone who glances their way (or doesn't...). Spiderwebs litter every hallways and passage, complete with spiders that patiently move their webs out of the way and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience with a sort of weariness that says they know exactly who to blame for this. A twelve-foot-high menorah sits in the Great Hall, leading some to suspect that the Headmaster's Intimations to learn more about the holiday did not produce universally-accurate results. Headmaster Birony herself patrols the grounds like a madwoman, slinging extra spookiness wherever she passes and occasionally Discovering costumes straight onto the innocent students she passes. "Spirit of the season!" she yells before fleeing, candy and toilet paper left behind in her path. If by this point you are questioning whether the Headmaster ever does actual work, rest assured you're not the first, nor will you be the last, to wonder that.

This seemed like a perfectly welcoming and suitable way to say farewell to a season, so he was in attendance. In fact, Atem was planning on camping out under the stars like so many of the other sundered. Gazing up at the sky, it was nothing like the vistas from home but how could anything compare with that? With the lack of electrical lights, and the sprawling expanse of the desert sand there wasn't anything to compete with the spherical orbs up above. that being said he could still appreciate the sight before him now.
Coming out of his trance, he unfurled a sleeping bag and laid it carefully on the ground. The festive music ensured a jovial mood. If he'd had a mind to, he would have invited someone else to have come along with him but he likely would run into plenty of his fellow classmates to while away the time with.
[This is Halloween]
As the headmaster proceeded down the hall caught up in a flurry of festival excitement, Atem wasn't able to fully assess what had transpired when he'd been struck with that stray show of magical mischief. The first thing he noticed was just how much draftier the hallway felt, and then there was something covering his face and hair....
Feeling oddly exposed, he looked down and caught sight of his midriff but at least that was all that was on display. Whether it was intentional or not, Atem had ended up dressed as either a genie or a dancing..... girl? At least there had been no physiological changes to go with it. He was still male, just dressed in what appeared to be a more feminine costume.
Perhaps he could make it back to the house tower before anyone caught sight of him? Assuming it had not decided to alter it's location yet again.
halloween
He's dumbstruck for a moment as they face each other in the hallway, and then with a nod and a cough he decides to pass by without saying anything. Please don't recognize him...

When neither one speaks a word the other unfortunate student starts to make his departure. After he passes by, Atem decides to speak. "Wait."
"You can't go that way." He pivoted on his feet to look at the back of the retreating figure. "There's a class that's about to let out. If you want to avoid being seen you should follow me." If they were as keen on not being spotted that is.

Kaiba really hopes the mask is enough to distort his voice. He'd know the pharaoh's voice anywhere...and he'll always follow, whether he admits it or not.
Best to keep his sentences short. "Headmaster prank?"
no subject
With a nod,"This way then." He aimed for an adjacent corridor but before going down it he pressed his back to the wall and leaned over enough to peer down it. "The coast is clear." Pushing himself off the stone structure he proceeded to walk as swiftly and as quietly as he could manage.
"Definitely." Then with a laugh,"If I had run into you under different circumstances I would have been more concerned. I'm not quite ready to return to the land of the dead."
no subject
He nodded. "Good, because I wouldn't want you to. And I really hope he wouldn't be insulted to be mistaken for this tacky costume."
And there was his distinctive snort. Seems he'd gotten too comfortable.

The answer he received however had him glancing to the side and up at this costumed gentleman. Somehow those words felt more emotionally charged than they should have been for a casual stranger. Who else had he seen on campus that was this tall? "... Mm yes, I suppose it isn't wholly authentic."
Looking back down the hallway he allowed a silence to pass between them before calling the other out. ".. and if anyone knew anything about flashy costuming it would be you... Kaiba."
no subject
"That's enough, pharaoh. Come on."
He yanks on Atem's wrist, in a sudden hurry to get them away from public view.
"...have I mentioned that I hate this place?"
no subject
"I wasn't going to press it further." He replied still finding the stone floor a suitable source to direct his attention to. Consequently, when Kaiba reaches out to grab him he wasn't expecting it. The first step is more of a stumble but he corrects himself after that.
"I'm sure you must have at least a dozen times now."
no subject
Kaiba can't really explain why he's so embarrassed...he knows he looks good, and he's confident and secure in his relationship. Maybe it's just the idea of being vulnerable in front of the man who always pierced his armor in the worst ways. But at least he's not the only one looking like this.
He does smile a little as they hurry along...once he remembers to let go of him. Finally, thankfully, they reach a tower. Atem and Yugi's tower.
"You'll be safe here until it wears off."

"If you're looking to make a quick getaway, then I might be able to assit... my lady."
no subject
It wasn't very good as a disguise. "Thanks....... uh... I think?" Sounding more like a question. He noted that her outfit looked a little drafty, but he tried not to let his eyes linger too long. "That's... some elaborate get up that you wound up with.""Thank yo-" Trailing off when she added that last part. Crossing his arms over his chest, his face darkened in coloration the embarrassment evident. "Nevermind that lady business... you're the only Lady here."
no subject
Lady bites her lip to stifle a chuckle. "Certainly." She offers him a hand. "Shall we?"
no subject
He eyed the offered hand dubiously, before taking it. "I could try to reverse the spell... but since it was the headmistress herself.............." It might be safer just to try and change clothes back at his room.
no subject
As soon as he takes her hand she tugs him closely and quickly heads down the rest of the hall until they're outside. Once outside she wraps her other arm around his waist and gives her wings a flap, so they can make a quick and clean getaway. "Which dorm are you in again?"
no subject
Atem wasn't sure what she was planning but he trusted in her directions. Once they were outside he only felt marginally more exposed to prying eyes. Was she sure about this? Before he can question it they're airborne. "Aer et Calculum".
no subject
"I'm guessing you plan to change, yeah? Are you going to get into another costume for the celebration of... whatever holiday this is, or are you just going to put on some regular clothes?"
no subject
"Mm. I was planning on it." He agreed easily to that question. "Ha- well that I hadn't considered." Then he thought to fill her in on some details since she must not celebrate it at home either. "It's called Halloween and it's a celebration thought to be held in honor of the dead... but it's turned into an excuse to dress in costume and consume candy." Smiling at that last part.
no subject
"It seems like a lot of the holidays I have heard about have changed over the years, but I guess there's nothing wrong with that... traditions often change... Are you going to eat candy?" Sweets generally weren't her thing, but that's because back home they didn't have many.

"I've also got a few pies--they're not Headmaster Birony's, but she must be off somewhere crashed from a sugar coma. Surprised she didn't zap me with her wand, but I've actually got an idea of my own for a Halloween costume, at some point..."
Isabel set down her tarp and arranged her blankets on it, setting the bag of pastry up at one end so she wouldn't accidentally crush it. She settled herself on her stomach, crossing her arms on her pillow and grinning over at Atem. "So, how've you been?"
Not that they hadn't seen each other, but she was always curious.

Pie was getting to be a tradition for them to share, a delicious one at that. The latter part of that sentence made his expression falter for a few moments. Had she seen him in the costume he'd been gifted with? "Oh? What sort of costume did you have in mind?"
As she set up her space it started to look more appealing than his own. the tarp placed a barrier between her and the ground, so moisture would be less of an issue and it also provided her more space to play with. Still, he plunked himself down on the sleeping bag for now. "Just fine, what about yourself?". His response was horribly lacking in details but the last month- though busy in itself -had been filled with more monotonous endeavors that wouldn't make interesting subjects for conversation.

She paused, then. "Well, this year would've been weird for me if I were at home. I was going from the juniors to the regular, so that's a whole new level. I might've washed out!" Isabel laughed at that--mostly because she figured it wasn't terribly likely, but there was always a possibility...
"Oh, Aaron and I were discussing costumes, and he liked my idea for one of the Grecian embodiments of the wind for him, and for me? A wood nymph," she said, grinning. Isabel had not seen Atem's outfit--she really would have tried, but been unable to resist making a comment about it if she had.
"Hey, if the ground's damp where you are, I can make room. Other than El disappearing for a bit? Not much out of the ordinary. Just that. And we were exploring some catacombs, but I couldn't tell you exactly where they were, as we kinda got there by portal." Isabel shrugged.
no subject
.. but then she backpedaled. He chuckled and added,"Well from what I've seen you wouldn't have been in any danger of that."
"Ah- so you both are planning on following a theme." Nymphs themselves were often portrayed as reclusive creatures, shy even. He couldn't say that he ever thought of Isabel as shy but then what would be the point of dressing up in costume if you weren't going for something different? Besides there was much she could do with an outfit in terms of creativity so it made a pretty picture in his mind. "I hadn't really considered one myself." Since he was not in the habit of celebrating that holiday.
"Its not yet, but I imagine the dew will change that by morning.... so... if you don't mind I'll take you up on that offer. I wasn't thinking ahead." For once. He frowned a bit at the thought of Eleven's odd experience. He still wasn't entirely sure why that had happened in the first place. "A portal?" That reminded him of that card Yugi possessed. "How was the portal created in the first place?"
no subject
Isabel laughed and waved a hand at Atem, now. "Oh, you flatter me--I think I was pretty complacent, so if I didn't up my game, well. I'd be in the bleachers, watching my cousin compete!" Not that Isabel would blame Ronnie one minute, if she made it and Isabel herself did not. Ronnie worked hard for what she did. Isabel admired her for it, though neither of them really discussed that among themselves. Maybe she ought to change that, when she got home.
"You hadn't? Maybe you should--unless the thought of running around and getting candy tires you out. I actually would herd my siblings, so it didn't bother me too much." And she never ended up eating all of her haul--there were enough other family members to make inroads on it.
"Not at all, I don't mind a bit!" That said, she got up from her sprawl and tugged her blankets and pillow over to one side, rescuing the pies as well. They could have them later. "We might still get wet, but at least it'll be a mild dampening and not total saturation." She paused at his next question, lips pursing as she tried not to frown.
"It was some sort of eyeball monster, from what El told me," she said, finally. "It said 'oh, crap, it's you' like it knew him, but disappeared, and left the portal behind it. Mr. Fell and Eleven and I went into it...probably not the best idea in our lives, but we made it out, at least."

To his words she replied even more humbly. It was a charming reaction really. "I suppose there was that possibility but you do see to have a natural talent for athleticism."
"I suppose I could." With a snort, "I'd like to think that I have enough endurance for that." It just didn't seem like something someone in his age bracket would engage in. That he kept to himself, not wishing to sound like like a total stick in the mud. "It sounds as if you have some very fond memories attached to these festivities."
He felt bad making her have to move, but he soon relocated his sleeping bag to one side of the tarp. Guess he hadn't been looking forward to waking up potentiality soaked. "Thank you."
"It sounds like I missed quite an adventure. I'm relieved that you all made it back as well." Atem thought favorable of all parties that had been mentioned so their loss would have been tragic.
