August Event Log

Speed of Lightning, Roar of Thunder

The latest rage in Diatu: portable lightning generators! These little spheres, compact enough to be held in the hand, can launch a miniature bolt of electricity out with flair and pizzazz and surprisingly nonlethal effects. Getting zapped is like getting bit by a horsefly, not much worse.

Naturally, all sorts of sports and pastimes have grown up overnight. The new sports of Lightning Tag, Lightningball, and Zap Each Other With Lightning Till Someone Collapses Because We're Tough Guys Dammit routinely break out on campus, while people who think they're funny can't go ten seconds without bolting someone's posterior. So what's your role in this? Eager participant? Sportsman? Buttzapper? Or is your idea totally new and wild?

And Break the Laws That They Should Fear

A rash of thefts plagues Anastara and the Magicademy both. Nothing huge, nothing heavy -- little things, like food, jewelry, trinkets and knickknacks... because the perpetrators are rats. Large and obviously clever rats, who have somehow wormed their way through defensive enchantments and mundane security both with the fearsome tenacity of their species. Look around at just the right time, and you might spot a rat scrambling for the safety of the caverns, something clutched in its jaws. Maybe something of yours?

The Cry Goes Up Both Far and Near

Finals draw ever-closer, and right about now students start realizing that maybe they don't understand this or that; maybe they could do with some outside material; maybe a second viewpoint would come in handy. Thus this week brings the Diatu Book Exchange! Outside of the Great Hall, students of all sorts brings books they no longer need and exchange them for books they do. The Book Exchange goes past merely scholarly works, though; time has grown it to encompass books of all sorts, from genre fiction and unlikely stories about seemingly ordinary kids attending an engineering boarding school to comics to philosophical works and more. Come to trade, browse, or lust -- there's something here for everyone!

Research on the SUNDERDOG! (Sunderdog!) SUNDERDOG! (Sunderdog!)

The research team has learned one important thing: Conflict is the key. The Codification of Sundering is the door.

Somehow, of late, something has changed the nature of Sundering magic. They do not know why or how, but the very existence of the concept of Sundering magic now causes summoning anomalies that focus on other worlds, resulting in the transport of the Sundered here.

This is, well, bad. The Codifications should not be slipping, not unless something has the power to completely overwhelm the entirety of human thought and will...

To test theory more deeply, this month's Research has the Sundered locked in a room with another Sundered, a pair of chairs, and nothing else. The goal is to observe the warp and weft of magic around them with minimal interference from any other source save perhaps each other. So who did you get shut in with, and how long can you just sit and talk without going crazy?

[Noticing the motion in his peripheral vision, he turned toward her to issue a hasty though sincere apology]

I'm sorry- I.... [The words catch in his throat and his eyes go wide with surprise as it's his turn to be shocked. Even though she looks every bit like she did in his memories, there's still a few moments dedicated to disbelief. You would think the fact that she called him by his title would have made his acceptance of her existence easier] Kisara?!

[Then he momentarily thinks back to his entrance and feels a bit sheepish. Cough. Oh well. Shoving that to the back of his mind he's more interested in finding out how long she's been here] Did..... you just arrive here recently? I- know it's possible for anyone to appear but.... [He was proof of that] What's the last thing that happened before you ended up here? [Not to bombard her with too many questions or anything]

[For whatever reason, she hadn't thought he'd be that shocked to see her here. If he can be here, then why can't she, after all? But her questions die as quickly as he's asking his questions and she's moving to lean against the nearest wall instead. Something comfortable, almost familiar.

It's weird talking to him even now, even though she knows full well that there's no reason for her to think she has no reason to be doing so.]

I did, yes. Otherwise I think whatever is at work here would have made this happen sooner. [Fate, destiny, whatever, tends to have that touch around people like them, after all. And she's well aware of it. Unfortunately.

But the topic of her remembering the last thing that happened is pulling her neutral expression to a frown. It's... not the best.]

The last thing that happened was that I was dead and had freed Seto from his possession, I thought I would end up elsewhere, obviously. [There's a slight hint of annoyance to her tone, very slight, but she had hoped to get some rest instead of being thrust somewhere entirely new with more things she had to learn.

One day she'll just get some peace and quiet. Maybe.]

How long have you been here?

[Somehow after all these months Atem had just accepted that the likelihood that anyone else from Egypt would make an appearance was slim to none. Even still he oftentimes would find himself wondering how Mana and Mahad would adjust to having to relearn magic here, how Set or the others were doing. He missed them terribly, but he also missed his modern day friends that he'd lost contact with too.

If he'd been thinking, he would have dialed back his questions on her behalf. Kisara had always been shy and reserved, and it was not as if they had shared many conversations before. It was a bit too much to expect her to just dive right in
] Yes- you do have a point.

... So you did not even have an opportunity to experience the afterlife. [With that he frowned too, regretting the question. It wasn't fair really- her brief life had been a trying one, fraught with danger. Then it ended while she was still quite young and been afforded no peace] It's been months, about 5 or 6 to be precise.

[Shy and reserved, perhaps, though at least having an opportunity to watch from the background until she was comfortable helped. She wasn't expected to be doing every little thing here, not expected to have to figure out how to summon something she really had no clue about, or that she was some ridiculously powerful person despite how most of her life had gone.

No, here she only has to listen to the rather annoying pomp and circumstance of making sure everything was impeccable at all times, which was at least slightly better.]

Nothing ever happens without a reason. [Or at least not around them, she's come to learn.]

I briefly got a glimpse, but as soon as I had time to process any of what I had seen, I ended up here instead. [One day. But there has to be some reason that she's been brought here instead of going to the afterlife instead, right? Something that has to be done on her part, not that she has a single idea what that might be quite yet. She'll figure it out, at some point.]

Five or six months? [That's... a long time. And a good time to know how this mess works.] And nothing has been figured out yet? I just... I'm sure you can understand why I'd rather get back to how things should be sooner rather than later.

[This setting had to be preferable in many ways to what she was used to. No one here knew her, nor did they know about the monster lurking within. Even if they did it likely wouldn't garner the same responses... at least not from the sundered themselves. Locals were another story.

Ah- from that description it wouldn't be hard to determine which house she'd been placed into.
]

No, it doesn't. [Instinctively reaching for the puzzle around his neck. The fact that it had arrived here had been troubling to him] As for me, I was in the afterlife for a while before I was drawn here. [In fact he'd even slipped in an additional trip to Domino before now]

Nothing definitive. [Bits and pieces of the puzzle were being discovered but nothing that could stop it or reverse the process] .......................... [He grew oddly silent and contemplative for a moment. Sure, there was every reason she might wish to return- but..... she wasn't factoring in the possibilities afforded here either] .... Would it be so bad to remain here for a little while...?

[Or, so far, the only people who knew of it wouldn't really bother with going after her due to said monster. Which is the preferable thing in this situation, she doesn't even really know if the creature would show up at some point or another. Thus it'd probably be safer for her to not put herself in that situation if at all possible.

It's a house she's honestly going to start being stressed about, but that's something for future Kisara to worry about.]

Is it... at least as good as we had been told? [She has no real idea on the subject and she's going quite for a moment as she looks at the puzzle, ah, of course he has that. She really shouldn't be surprised at this point. But her attention is focusing to his face again, not... entirely sure how to take his silence.

Until he's speaking again and it all makes sense.]

I... suppose it wouldn't, but it's a little frustrating to go from a situation like that to something I have to learn all over again. In a place I don't know, people I have no idea about, and it being far different than anything I could have imagined. [She's rubbing at her face for a brief moment.]

Just a moment to have some sort of rest is all I really ask for, though I suppose I can't be afforded that, either. Not that it was ever really an option.

[That was also very true given that Kaiba, Atem, and Yugi wouldn't persecute her because of her connection to Blue-Eyes.]

Better. [Smiling genuinely. It wasn't as if he was trying to brag, so much as give her hope in case she did get to return. Being reunited with everyone who had gone before him had been a great source of elation and comfort for the pharaoh. That was why sometimes he found it difficult to explain to Yugi and Kaiba that he wouldn't mind returning at some point. They seemed to think of it unfavorably. Of course, the longer that Atem remained in Anastara the more attached he was becoming to it. It ... wouldn't be the worst if he lived out some of his days here without a heavy burden to bear.] I.... can well imagine. [Already trying to convince her of the merits of this second chance..] On the surface it must seem daunting but you won't have to go through it alone. [Not this time] ... And.. yes somethings have changed since our time but in some ways it's for the better.

Kisara..... [Listening to her words she just sounded so drained physically and emotionally. He couldn't help himself, he was compelled to reach out to her. Extending an arm he grasped one of her hands with his, giving it a light squeeze] I know that this isn't something you anticipated would happen, nor wanted but I have confidence that in time you will find something redeeming in the experience. Fate- has not always been kind to you but here.... there's a real opportunity for things to be different.

[Better than what the tales had told them? Honestly, she shouldn't be surprised that that's the case, there's something to be said of the afterlife and the gods they knew far too well even in their living days. It's... comforting, in a sense, to know that whenever she returned that it would be there, waiting. A place of rest and without worry of the burdens of the physical realm.

Perhaps in time she would understand being attached to this place, but for now she's fairly certain that it's a learning curve that she's not too convinced she can really overcome. It's not as simple as what she's used to, a state of simple survival no matter what means were necessary to accomplish that goal...]

There's something to be said about going through things on your own, you learn quickly how to rely on what strengths you may or may not possess. How to work through those to overcome what is in front of you, just in order to survive. But I... guess it wouldn't be terrible to have some help in a far more... compassionate place than before. [The biggest understatement and she honestly knows it, even if she did kind of come face-to-face with a dragon that went from 0 to 100 a little too fast for her liking until the situation was more understandable.

She certainly won't stop him from taking her hand, but it does not stop her from letting out a soft little huff of breath. It's not remotely serious as a bit of a smile is tugging at the corners of her lips as she listens to him.]

You really think so? You honestly give me too much credit, pharaoh, I'm no different than anyone else here in the long run. But.... perhaps there is something to be gained from this place, it certainly does me no good to pine for going back if I end up being here for months, hm?
