August Event Log
Speed of Lightning, Roar of Thunder
The latest rage in Diatu: portable lightning generators! These little spheres, compact enough to be held in the hand, can launch a miniature bolt of electricity out with flair and pizzazz and surprisingly nonlethal effects. Getting zapped is like getting bit by a horsefly, not much worse.
Naturally, all sorts of sports and pastimes have grown up overnight. The new sports of Lightning Tag, Lightningball, and Zap Each Other With Lightning Till Someone Collapses Because We're Tough Guys Dammit routinely break out on campus, while people who think they're funny can't go ten seconds without bolting someone's posterior. So what's your role in this? Eager participant? Sportsman? Buttzapper? Or is your idea totally new and wild?
And Break the Laws That They Should Fear
A rash of thefts plagues Anastara and the Magicademy both. Nothing huge, nothing heavy -- little things, like food, jewelry, trinkets and knickknacks... because the perpetrators are rats. Large and obviously clever rats, who have somehow wormed their way through defensive enchantments and mundane security both with the fearsome tenacity of their species. Look around at just the right time, and you might spot a rat scrambling for the safety of the caverns, something clutched in its jaws. Maybe something of yours?
The Cry Goes Up Both Far and Near
Finals draw ever-closer, and right about now students start realizing that maybe they don't understand this or that; maybe they could do with some outside material; maybe a second viewpoint would come in handy. Thus this week brings the Diatu Book Exchange! Outside of the Great Hall, students of all sorts brings books they no longer need and exchange them for books they do. The Book Exchange goes past merely scholarly works, though; time has grown it to encompass books of all sorts, from genre fiction and unlikely stories about seemingly ordinary kids attending an engineering boarding school to comics to philosophical works and more. Come to trade, browse, or lust -- there's something here for everyone!
Research on the SUNDERDOG! (Sunderdog!) SUNDERDOG! (Sunderdog!)
The research team has learned one important thing: Conflict is the key. The Codification of Sundering is the door.
Somehow, of late, something has changed the nature of Sundering magic. They do not know why or how, but the very existence of the concept of Sundering magic now causes summoning anomalies that focus on other worlds, resulting in the transport of the Sundered here.
This is, well, bad. The Codifications should not be slipping, not unless something has the power to completely overwhelm the entirety of human thought and will...
To test theory more deeply, this month's Research has the Sundered locked in a room with another Sundered, a pair of chairs, and nothing else. The goal is to observe the warp and weft of magic around them with minimal interference from any other source save perhaps each other. So who did you get shut in with, and how long can you just sit and talk without going crazy? |

[March Hare isn't very keen on this Lightning Tag game. It seems kind of foolish, even to him - but then again, there was little time for fun and games growing up on the farm. But no matter! Certainty or no, this a game he's been invited to play. He's not going to refuse the offer.
He also doesn't totally have a handle on who's playing and who isn't, yet. So, regardless of if you're playing... Zap!]
Tag! You're it!
The Cry Goes Up...
Books!
[March Hare can be found positively frolicking around the piles of books being offered for exchange, checking out this one and that one - with an eye out for fiction. Eventually, he looks up at someone nearby, and they'll get a little March Hare History.]
I wanted to be an author as a youth, you know! It just couldn't be, but oh! What could have been!
Research
[Well, this is one way to get to know one of his new classmates. March kicks his legs back and forth; they're far off the ground from the chair in which he sits.]
And how are you today? It's quite the room, isn't it? A certain charm to it...

TAG YOU'RE IT!
[Does Webby seem like the type of person to ask permission before throwing you into a game? Of course not. So that's really all the warning you get before trying to throw some lightning magic at you.
Obligatory "DUCK!" pun here.]
Break The Laws
[The best way to stop a thief is to catch a thief! So Webby has dived into research, and believes she's come up with a brilliant plan to catch one of the rats.
... a piece of cheese placed in the shadow of a basket that's tied to a string, where she waits around a corner.]
Heeeere ratty ratty rat rat...
The Cry Goes Up
[Always happy to expand her knowledge, Webby is browsing the books to see what she wants to trade. The one in her hands is currently puzzling her, and she tilts her head as she talks out loud to herself.]
'And whenever I see him, I get this weird feeling deep within my chest'. Maybe it's influenza? And why are there flowers all around now, I thought this was a classroom, not a garden. And what does 'doki doki' mean?
[You're damn right she's reading a cheesy manga. Come and spot your favorite tropes.]
Research on the Sunder...dog
[How long? Very long, on Webby's end. May the gods have mercy on the other person, though.]
So if they forget about us and we get close to starving to death, maybe we can break the chairs and use the split ends to dig a way out! Wouldn't that be fun?

[One of the rats has made off with - of all things - the cork to Louie's inkwell as he studies in the library. It doesn't really bother him, though he can't help glancing at Cash expectantly.]
You know, you're a rat, too. You could go talk to him and get that back.
[Cash's only response is to shake his head and nuzzle Louie's hand affectionately.]
Nah? Okay, cool. [He's just going to call out, then, despite being in the library:] Anyone got a spare cork? Or something I can use as one?
Research
[Until quite recently, Louie avoided all of the Researchers' efforts. It just seemed like a horrible idea, from when they first requested blood and feather samples. But... This one seems harmless enough. And when he played a game with Yugi, well- That was actually fun. So he agrees, this month.]
This is so boring...
[He leans back in his chair as he... Waits for his fellow Sundered to be let in. Yeah, it's been less than a minute. This can only go well.]

Of course Lena was all about having a compact electricity generator. Not because everyone else seemed to have one - she hardly cared about that. But she'd found that lightning and electric magic came pretty easy to her, and this meant that she had something portable that she could use her magic on.
For the most part, she could be found practicing with the generator, seeing what she could make the electricity do other than send a small charge. But someone passing close by might feel a sudden shock.
But a look at Lena would just show her innocently practicing. Why would you even think it was her?
The Cry Goes Up Both Far and Near
In all honesty, Lena was less invested in finals than she had been with midterms. So most of the academic books were pretty lost on her.
Still, with the wide range of books this time, there had to be something that caught her eye. So she kept on browsing, looking through different ones to see if any of them were interesting.
Research
The doors closing behind her and her research partner, Lena glanced around the bare room.
"...Well, this sure is exciting."

Kaiba is above such childish games as the rampant zapping, but he can't deny that the devices have their appeal. He purchases one and pockets it, occasionally bringing it out on a rainy day to watch the bolts dance in the air. It's almost enough to make him feel the power of his beloved dragons.
He uses a minor spell to bend the bolts into a sphere, holding it above his head on a rainy day as he reads. Join him for a chat...or make him lose focus. Nothing could possibly go wrong with this setup!
RATS
Seto Kaiba is scowling. This isn't really unusual for him, but the reason for it is new. He's crouched in a shadowy corner of campus with an elaborately built cozy rat space that's actually a disguised cage, filled with various shiny objects and gobs of peanut butter.
The reason? The simple locket resembling a trading card that he so recently recovered at great personal cost is gone. Gone. Unforgivable. He sets his trap, crouches in the corner, and calls out to the guilty.
"Why don't you come out here and face me like men?"
They're rats, Kaiba, but okay.

When it came to animals, Fluttershy was able to notice them a bit better than most. So it was only a matter of time before she caught some rats trying to make off with a few items here and there.
...How she managed to gather a crowd of them, it was hard to say, but they all stood in a group at her feet as she knelt down to them, and she seemed to be talking to them.
"Now, I understand you're all just trying to survive, but you're going to get in trouble stealing things like that," she said, her tone a light reprimand. "People might not be so forgiving, and you could all get really hurt."
The rats didn't really seem to understand her all that much, but that didn't stop them from seeming to listen to her. And at the very least, she held their attention enough that they currently weren't stealing anything.
The Cry Goes Up Both Far and Near
Fluttershy couldn't help feeling a little eager about the Book Exchange; not only were there books she could pick up to help with finals, but there were other books that looked interesting too.
The problem was, she didn't have too many books that she could exchange, and she could be seen struggling trying to pick between which books to exchange for.
"Goodness," she said after a moment, looking back and forth between the two titles. "I wonder if Twilight ever has this problem..."
Research
"...Oh dear," Fluttershy murmured as the doors close. Other than the two chairs in the middle, the room is uncomfortably empty.
And she couldn't help thinking of a few other times she'd been locked in a blank white space.
"I-I um...this might not have been a good idea."

Being fresh off the airship, Marisol didn't have the wherewithal to purchase one of the curious balls of encapsulated lightning for herself but she was intrigued by them and oftentimes something so small finds a way to lose it's owner. As soon as she found one that was unattended, she seized it for herself. At first she was a little mesmerized by it as the watching as the lights flickered and danced on command. Sure, these small bolts were nothing like what she used to be able to produce herself, but the uniqueness of them was not lost on her.
Besides- playing tricks on others was getting to be one of her favorite hobbies.
Therefore whenever she saw the opportunity the sphere would wind up shocking a victim, and she would always try to blame it on someone nearby if questioned, palming the sphere into her concealing robes. Why should she try to pull off something like this when she wasn't even settled in yet?
Break the Law
When Marisol's jewelry started to disappear she wasn't overly concerned. The reason being that she had assumed that she could always fashion new ones from manipulating the minerals in the ground as she had done to form the baubles in the first place. That was when she first realized her error. Currently without her powers, she was determined to find the earring and bangle that had been stolen, all the while keeping her remaining items on at all times for their protection.
So she can be found examining the holes in the wall, and allowing her familiar, Jenghis, a walking stick bug with the peculiar talent for altering his size, to journey into them to hunt for the rats.
Of course... this also meant you could find Marisol, talking to seemingly nothing. "If you haven't found anything by now, let's move on to the next one....".
The Cry Goes up both near and far
The activity at the book exchange caught Marisol's interest so she began to peruse with the others. She tended to steer towards books with fancy text or illustrations marveling over the details and craftsmanship. Strangely, she wouldn't spend much time with any of them though, nor was she interested in borrowing any. The scripts were foreign to her, though in some ways they resembled what she was used to seeing. Many of the humanoid species would either ink such symbols or chisel them into surfaces.
Is it a problem, if..... she doesn't know what any of them say?
Linguistically speaking she excelled at conversational and fell short of written. She'd never needed to read or write before even many of the people she had observed in the past kept oral histories through stories and songs more often than writing them down. So... she wasn't panicking ... yet.
Research
At first, Marisol had debated turning the researchers down having no desire in aiding her delivery back to her realm, but curiosity got the better of her. So here she was, ears alert, eyes shining as her tail flicked beside her. She wondered just what sort of person or creature might waltz through that door. The setting lacked imagination, but that wasn't the point of it, was it?
Wildcard
"I'm....... really not sure what to do about...... that." Marisol shook her head as she stood dumbfoundedly in the courtyard. It's not something she would have openly admitted had she thought anyone was in earshot. She was staring up at a 100 foot bug currently climbing the castle walls. Despite it's size it was remarkably light so she didn't think it would cause any damage. Emphasis on think.
"Jenghis, can you hear me?!" Cupping her hands around her mouth she tried reasoning with the bug but he was either ignoring her or he couldn't hear her. "...... I know you're hungry, but... pitching a tantrum isn't going to help....".
Reluctantly she abandoned the courtyard and raced for the stairs, gathering up her robes so she wouldn't trip on them. Then she started seeking the tallest tower she could find that would bring her closer to her rogue familiar. Hopefully- uh.... none of the other sundered would notice? Or... think they were under attack?
[OOC: In her haste she might slam into one of the other students.]

[Aziraphale is crouched among the books, studiously ignoring other searchers unless they speak to him, and amassing for himself a substantial pile from which he's then being extremely, extraordinarily choosy. He very much looks the part of a wizard, or at least a stodgy old bookshop owner, devoted to his task. If one looks, favored in his piles seem to be books on the Sundered and Sundering magic, as well as anything remotely resembling prophecy and seeing. A few religious texts and quality-looking pieces of literature make the cut as well, along with anything that appears very, very old. He has no books to trade away, however, which makes his part of this deal a bit unfair.]
Research
[He's here for research of his own, hoping to better understand the process of and rules surrounding Sundering magic. Aziraphale has the feeling that the trick to returning home will be in understanding how exactly they pulled him in here in the first place. And since they don't quite know how...
He wiggles a bit in his seat, straightens his bow tie (which his has decidedly NOT sacrificed for the sake of style, no matter how it clashes with his Ka uniform. Could they have not gone for more comfortable chairs, though? Really. And this from someone who sat on park benches on the regular.]
I had hoped they'd at least provide refreshments. [Ever seen a grown angel pout? Well you have now. And it's all done with a certain judgmental air, as if politely critiquing the researchers' hosting skills.] I, for one, am feeling a bit peckish.

[While everyone ELSE is busy making fools of themselves, Noa is up to something else. He's gathered before him a few of those neat little lightning generators, all looped together with copperwire and insulation of some kind. He and Spryo have it set up like a necklace...looped around a log, for now.]
Alright. I'm going to get the orbs to activate...try playing when that happens, hmm?
[The wires lead to the guitar, or at least the ends of the strings. The electricity arcs and zaps, and probably with all that horsefly kick.
BUT IS IT...ENOUGH....

gross] ...Well that one certainly isn't...[SUNDERDOG!!!]

"Try it and you'll get a taste of what true suffering feels like," Hel threatened when she spotted yet another one of these idiots playing with his new toy. The lightning shocks were getting out of hand and some of the instigators were so smug about it, as if they could rival Thor himself with their puny generators. Tensing, she floated a little higher into the air, raising her arms up ready to engage in combat.
Unfortunately, the hallway she occupied had a ceiling that was too low. She was still well in range.
Although her words were cold, and serious she wasn't sure her fellow student believed her. "If you need proof, then look behind you."

"..... I'm getting deja vu." Tilting her head to one side as she entered the room. "Only this time we're alone- and there's nothing in place to ensure we tell the truth." With that, she straightened her posture and strode in further. "Whatever."
"I can tolerate it."

[By far, lightning was not something uncommon to her. She knew well enough her connection to it at this point and it's one of the few reasons she's keeping one of these little orbs close to her, not seeming bothered in the slightest by the little electrical shocks that may come here and there. It's also part of the reason she's perched in one of the outcroppings of the windows in one of the various hallways, this tiny orb precariously sitting on her propped knees.
Her fascination with it seems clear, focus addressed to it and little else around her. But she's an easily startled creature.]
Research
[If this isn't a weirdly kind of familiar feeling, being stuck in a place while whatever weird shenanigans is going on around her. But this one feels more... safe... than the last time she'd had to deal with it. She has someone else in the room with her for once, which is always a plus, and she doubts it's for a reason that would be fighting related or results in someone's death.
Or, well, she hopes that's the case anyway.]
I... don't really know what we're supposed to be doing here. [Her accent is rather thick, making it very clear English is not her native language.]

[Dust bounces the ball in his hand, judging its weight and heft and potential. Portable electricity, huh? Reminds him of the trick Fidget had learned from Lady Tethys. So maybe he can make similar use of it...]
[Very carefully, Dust moves well away from the central path, so no one can possibly get caught in his experimentation. Once he's sure no one is in the field he faces, he slowly draws the Blade of Ahrah into his hand.]
[Then Dust tosses the ball into the air, and in the same motion lifts the sword as his fingers uncurl from the hilt. Ahrah blurs into a vortex, whirling so fast that it is visible only as a distortion of the terrain seen through its path. Drawn in by the suction the vortex creates, the ball slips into the center where the buffeting winds all but cancel each other out.]
[A spark shoots out of that ball, and the Dust Storm magnifies it a hundredfold. A massive, forked tongue of lightning erupts forward, accompanied by a boom of thunder that rolls over the grounds like a physical blow. Just as quickly as it came, it vanishes, leaving only afterimages and rumbling in its wake.]
[Dust catches the hilt of his sword, and the lightning ball a moment later.] Yeah. I think I can work with this.
The Cry Goes Up
[Dust has found something interesting -- a book describing the history and legacy of weapons in the Tenscore Kingdoms! He flips through it at speed, checking the pictures and skimming some of the relevant texts.]
How many types of polearms are there in this world? That's something like twenty alone...
[Unusual for Dust, he's so into this discovery that he isn't paying any attention to his surroundings. Want to catch him off guard? You might manage to do so even if you aren't trying to!]
Research
[As the door shuts behind them, Dust drops into a seat in a motion too graceful to be called a flop, even if that's what it is in spirit. With his eyes hidden behind his hat and his expression neutral, he might not be the best companion for a long stay with nothing to do...]
I'm a little surprised they didn't ask us to fight in here.

[Orisa has found her purpose: goalkeeper! The omnic plants herself in front of the two posts that serve as her team's goal, a force shield deployed in front of her.]
I will not move!
[Not that she has to. The 'ball' arcs towards her as someone fires off a desperate throw, beans the force shield, and falls harmlessly to the ground where a defender scoops it up. Looking very pleased with herself, Orisa offers a wave to the other team.]
The Laaaaaaws
HALT!
[The rat does not halt, unsurprisingly enough, nor does it drop the large coin it carries in its mouth. Ever the model of proportionate retribution, Orisa fires off another dozen rounds at it, which thump into the grass and dirt nearby without doing any harm at all.]
[Her fusion driver slows her down when firing, so she can only launch these brief bursts without losing it. Making a frustrated noise, she opens the vents on her weapon to reload as she races after the rat.] I will not have my wages stolen!

[Jecht approaches these new lightning balls with all the patience, maturity, and dignity anyone would expect from him.]
Gotcha! [Grinning, Jecht tosses the ball in his hand up to catch it again, while the student he'd zapped casts him a withering look. Not at all bothered, Jecht turns to hunt for a new target. Why not have some fun?]
Crying Out
[Okay, so... Jecht ain't the book type. Exactly as you'd figure. But considering he hadn't had the best grades for midterms, he's thinking that just maybe he needs to find some reading material that's more his style. Though right now that consists of him checking books and tossing them aside.]
History of Modification in Noa? Naw. Ten Secrets to Modification -- yeah, the secrets are all math, pass. A Dissertation on Forging (Featuring Fine Alchemi Details)... who the hell reads this stuff?
[Lobbing that one back onto a pile, Jecht plunges his hand deep into a stacked-full table to try and find something good inside it. Help a guy out?]

(CW animal cruelty to a rat)
Oho! Now this was fun. Someone might be collecting the things enmasse. And experimenting with just how much damage they can do when all ordered to hit the same target at the same time. For the moment he's experimenting with trees, but he wouldn't mind having a volunteer....
And Break The Laws
Sho didn't have much that mattered that a rat could steal. He really didn't have much that mattered to him that was physical. His bullhorn which was too big and his pin which he was wearing. So when he spotted a rat making off with something, that something belonged to someone else. "Soh Cah Toa." Didn't that just work out perfectly. He tested out fourteen of those electro ball things at once on that same poor rat, bending to scoop the pilfered item from the crispy jaws. Now... what prize had he won for his victory in combat, he wondered...
Research
Sho was more than amused to help. How better to suss out who could work for him and who needed to be erased than some enforced one on one time? When you're shown into the room, the math freak was already there, working on building a rather impressive looking tower of trash.....

V might have very little patience for these games, but V does have an interest in gathering these orbs for research, and magical aid. Sure, one might only do 1 HP damage at most, to someone who wore no armor at all, maybe. But what about more? And more, could studying these lead to V being able to regain improved quickened lightning bolt? Only one way to find out....
So you might find the genderless elf in the library, surrounded by four of these spheres, a fifth on the table alongside pages and pages of notes....
Break the laws
V glared at the thieving rat, then gestured to the waiting familiar who became a rather large cat - black with what looked like badly painted grey on grey stripes - and sent Willard to pouncing on the rat to retrieve the stolen items.
Oh look, someone finally remembered that they had a familiar....
Cry goes up
Book exchange? Count V in. Someone might be perusing the tomes offered for anything that looked overtly like it might contain keys to physics defying magic....
