[ yugi had stayed overnight in purifuel, but at the crack of dawn decided to head back to his own dorm, because one, he didn't want to get caught and two, he needed some time to himself. that's part of the reason he hadn't planned on going to class, but the distraction might be welcome. maybe. he's not really sure he's going to be able to focus on anything but how terrible a person he is for using that stupid card. he smothers his face with his hands, trying to keep it together, which is difficult when he's exhausted and guilt ridden. ]

[ could today get any worse? ]

[He was on the prowl, intent on one end to this performance and one only. Without knowing what he was doing, Kuja had donned his darkest attire, as it seemed fitting to what he was about to do, and had gone searching for one man and one man alone. That was his sole focus. That was his only happiness in life.]

[He still had his classes to attend, he was sure, but he didn't care for them. Not now. Not with this urgency behind it, as though this one event, this one game, would mark the difference between his eternal damnation and his very redemption. Because somehow, there was such a thing. Somehow, everything hinged upon it, and this was all he needed to gain eternal life.]

[And there, at last, the man was. There, on his way to wherever, this was his answer. So simple a response. So easy price to pay. Kuja beelined for the man the moment his gaze fell upon the man, despite never having seen him beforehand, and he raised a hand to point in accusation.]

You! You will be my opponent this evening. Ready your cards, and face me!

[ he had decided to skip class. stupid, probably, especially with midterms coming up, but the thought of having to focus on anything was just not something he could do. his thoughts were a mess, and he was feeling way too emotional to be capable of successfully casting anything spells, especially if professor loshakle was involved. ]

[ the talk the previous day with kaiba had him temporarily feeling alright, but that might have only been the case because yugi didn't want to further concern him. he had plenty to worry about like being trapped in a card because his boyfriend absolutely sucked. ]

[ he sighs, shoulders slumping, the call to him ignored, because the person couldn't possibly be talking to him, right? but then he continues on and yugi has to turn around to see just what is going- what. ] M- Me? [ well, he was pointing at him. ] I, ah, I think you've mistaken me for... [ he looked around. ] this guy. [ he jerks a thumb at some random student and bolts. ] EASY MISTAKE TO MAKE!

[Oh no, boy. He knows exactly who it is that he needs to face next in his long, long list of people to dominate. And it is you. Therefore, Kuja grins, too much sadism in the look upon his face as he walks - walks - after his target.]

Oh? Running from me? How long do you think you can run? No one in this world can flee forever. I would gladly accept your admission of defeat, however, that must not be the case. I would sooner see proof of your defeat with my own eyes than hear tales of it from those who live among the lower ranks, as I know you like to do.

[ he can still hear him talking as he rushes down the path. yugi isn't going to be able to run forever, but maybe he can find somewhere to hide or something. why the heck does this guy want to foil clash him, and why can't he just take no for an answer. ]

I, ah, I can't play though! I'm taking a semi-permanent break, sorry! [ he calls back, unsure if he's been heard or not. ] But there are plenty of other people you can totally play! I can even point you in their direction!

[ Hopefully you weren't going anywhere in particular, Yugi, because the pathway to wherever you were going? A wall of green flames just erupted in front of it. The wall stretches in a wide circle, eventually trapping him with that one weird Eiather chick with the red and yellow hair.

But she's not so friendly today. She's traded her school robes for a studded black leather jacket, black steel-toed boots, and a red and yellow dress that looks like a swirl of flame. She's got her arms folded, and she's wearing a wicked smirk. ]

So are you the one they call King of Games? Ha, that's funny. You sure don't look the part.

[ she's fast, but she's faster, his wand in hand and extinguishing the flames, his eyes narrowed until he realizes it's sunset. what. the person he had met earlier he didn't know, so he had considered it a fluke, maybe, but... why was she doing this? acting like this? he frowns, tightening his grip on his wand. ]

Whether or not I look the part is irrelevant. [ the title was his. ] What are you doing? [ he takes a pointed step back, considering his options. he wants to run, because he doesn't want to have to deal with this, but dealing with this seems to be the only way to fix this. ] And what do you want? [ maybe he can get some answers? ]

[ What. Hmph. She'll just have to stalk closer, gripping her deck and shuffling it as flamboyantly as she can manage. ]

Oh, not much. Just your crown. And your utter and complete humiliation would pair nicely with it, I think.

What's come over you, Sunset, I thought... I thought we were friends!

[ he stands his ground, digging his heels in and staring her down. he's not scared, he's just confused, and hurt, and so freaking exhausted. what is going on?! ]

Not going to happen. [ he's not sure he's going to get answers from her, not when she's like this, but... probably not afterward either. he doesn't really know how he's going to get to the bottom of this. his eyes briefly look to the deck box strapped to his belt. ] But why do you suddenly want my crown anyway?

Looks like you thought wrong, Yugi.

[ There's a dangerous glint in her eye and she continues. ]

Because I've been denied my true place in the sun for far too long! Because the fact that it's in the hands of the likes of you is unacceptable. You goody-types, you always think you're better than us! That just because you're so just and righteous, that makes you better at wielding power!

That is so not true, by the way. And I'll prove it.

I... I guess so...

And you think taking the title of King of Games is going to help you prove yourself worthy? If this is how you act and how you treat people, then you'll never earn that right and I don't need some game to be able to tell me that much. I don't know what's come over you, Sunset, but you need to take a step back and look at yourself, because life is about more than just wielding power... or at least whatever you believe power to be.

[ but if she's not going to back down, then neither is he. he reluctantly reaches for his deck, his hand shaking as he grabs it. ] I never claimed to be just and right and any of those things. I'm no different from anybody else here! [ he starts shuffling his deck. ] I make mistakes too... like thinking a card game could be played just for fun...

But if this is what you want, then fine - FOIL CLASH!

No. I know exactly what I want and how to get it.

[ Now she's on her way! She smirks and draws her hand, immediately laying a trap. Oh, how she loves taking control of her opponents' creatures. ]

Tell me, Yugi, do you know how it feels to lose everything?

You only think you do.

[ he summons a pair of identical monsters and lays a card face down. ]

I do, actually. [ when he lost atem and more recently when he lost kaiba. ] I’ve lost it all, twice, and I’m afraid you’re not the only one that thinks I’m undeserving... [ he bows his head briefly. ] But that doesn’t mean I’m going to roll over and give up, especially to the likes of you! If you want the win, then prove yourself worthy of it. [ he sends his monsters to attack. ]

[Oh no, that isn't going to work. Kuja is insistent. So much so, in fact, that he raises his wand and sends a small fireball to block Yugi's path. He won't hurt the boy, no. He needs him alive for this.]

[He stalks closer, tail lashing behind him.]

There will be plenty of time for you to take a break when we're finished. One little game won't kill you, will it?

Technically speaking, Noa has been dead set on this goal since like. Lunch. Lunch was had, and then he sat down with a dragon to study physics for all of five minutes when everything went to crud.

He stood up, said he needed to go, and left. Unfortunately for Noa, while the idea of bolting for the games store and a clothing store was a great idea in practice, he happened to encounter Spyro there as well.

They spotted the other picking costumes. They spotted the other picking cards. And now, before he can even get a word to Yugi, he spots the dragon again, opening his mouth, and-

And as far as Yugi is going to see, a 'well dressed' purple dragon the size of a dog is getting tackled by a green haired kid wearing no less than the following:

Shades,

A snazzy blue vest,

Those are probably some attempt at spiked bracelets (those are evil right??? THREATENING),

Maybe a coat? Does it count as a coat if the sleeves end at the elbows?

"SPYRO THIS IS GOING TO BE MY FIGHT, BACK! OFF!"

He'll. Get to the challenge. Trust him.

Not while he has something to say about it!

To which, Spyro yelps upon being tackled. His idea of being well-dressed for evil is some shiny new (fake) bling and completely black robes. Because even dragons like his kind specifically are as a whole still not that big on wearing a lot of clothes.

"I got here first!"

Ooh, bad move. Sorry, not sorry about it.

[ Yup, she had a trap ready for that. But she doesn't seem to see the bigger picture here. Continue preparing to crush her, Yugi. ]

Fine. I'll prove myself far , and I won't be denied anymore! Haha!

[ She sends her next round of monsters. ]

[ yugi has to step aside to avoid being knocked over by the both of them. he normally would have assumed their fight had nothing to do with him, except for the fact that he's been being challenged by people left and right. he frowns, immediately backpedaling. ]

[ maybe they'll be so caught up in their own fight that they won't see him trying to quietly back away. ]

[ nothing to see here! ]

[ oh... boy... ]

[ this isn't good. ]

N- No, I suppose not. [ yugi still seems reluctant to clash with this guy, but maybe one quick fight will get him to stop chasing him. he's not really sure why he's just got to challenge him, but he supposes he can try to find the answer out later... when he's not being assaulted. ]

Fine, one game, and when I win I want some answers.

[ when she takes control of one of his monsters he doesn't seem the least bit concerned. he takes the direct hit from her monsters, because on his turn he's going to turn this around. ]

[ letting her think she's got the upper hand is an easy way to lull her into a false sense of security too. he doesn't play a monster just yet, and instead flips over death toll as well as another card that immediately shoots crack straight through the middle of the battlefield, and as the ground crumbles away all of their monsters tumble in. ]

[ the souls of all of the monsters go onto the death toll card as an enormous bone dragon climbs its way out of the crevice. it roars, shaking the immediately area as it spreads its wings and fills the field with a vile poison that'll effect any and all monsters played for the remainder of the game. ]

[ four souls... one more to go. it's not that he plays a monster, one that immediately can't take the poison - it's attack and defense cut in half. next turn it'll be dead, but for now he'll have his dragon attack her, and then he'll lay another card face down and end his turn. ]

I'm sorry, Sunset, but I can't let you win.

[ yugi is riding peregrin, who has taken the form of a griffin like creature, and is frantically looking for kaiba. he's pretty sure the foil clash they'd had recently is to blame for all of this, but he can't be too sure. that being said, he's been wondering if the remaining text on the card is capable of putting an end to all of this. that, or make it worse. honestly he wouldn't be surprised if it made it worse. ]

[ he's physically and emotionally drained though, and he feels like he's running out of options. yugi can hear several students chasing him, trying to cast spells to impeded his progress, but he immediately begs peregrin to take to the skies, so he can catch a brief break... and maybe hide. he takes out a small notebook and quickly scribbles a message to kaiba. ]

[ Kaiba's been looking for Yugi everywhere. After that trouble last night, they really need a break...and apparently they aren't getting one. He has to dodge a few spell effects to reach the library, but when he gets there he opens his enchanted journal.

Library. Not an ideal meeting spot. Everyone's more crazed than usual---I'll go to the gate. What's going on?

[ and if kaiba goes outside and looks up he'll see yugi ( and peregrin ) circling above. he asks his familiar to land, so kaiba can climb aboard and they can find somewhere safe to talk. there's a spot far across campus that should do nicely. ]

You're telling me. Everybody's lost it. I don't think I've had more than five minutes to myself today. What with everybody challenging me to foil clashes like it was going out of style. [ he huffs, clearly exhausted. he hadn't gotten any sleep the night he spent with kaiba, but that's his own fault. being run ragged all day has certainly not helped his situation. ]

[ Kaiba waits, and in any other situation he'd really take the time to enjoy the flight. But he knows Yugi needs him now (and there's a wild-eyed person rushing at them with a deck), so he holds on a little tighter than strictly necessary as they fly to a quieter spot. ]

...in other words, everyone's turned into me from three years ago? Wow. I know you've been working on making the game more popular, but how could that happen overnight?

[ he makes a face back at kaiba. ] No. [ kaiba. ] But I think it might have to do with Deathtoll. We played the other night, remember, and then this happens. It can't be a coincidence. [ he shakes his head, looking down below to see a bunch of people readying their wands. yugi's quick to cast a protection spell, urging peregrin to fly faster. ]

[ they eventually reach the spot, tucked away behind a bunch of shrubs and trees. yugi gets off peregrin and drops to his knees, taking a much needed breath. ] I think this is all my fault. [ he shuts his eyes. ] Everybody's lost their minds and I just... I don't know what to do. I think the remainder of the text on the card might help, but I... I'm also afraid that it's going to make it worse. [ his gaze drops to the ground as tears well in his eyes. ]

Hell. Is it...is it to do with lingering darkness in me? Or a curse on the card itself?

[ He remembers something like that from long ago. Kaiba sighs and drops beside Yugi, taking the card in hand. ]

It could be the key to solving the crisis, or it could make it worse. I wonder...

[ He squints at the text for a long time, but it's still illegible. ]
