Circular Logic - OTA

What: Examining a mysterious circle.

Warnings: Sho may try and kill someone again, maybe? It's Sho, so can't say for sho'.




A group of students, knowing Sho's interest in circles and magic had shown Sho the underground circle they had found. There are runes written around it in an ancient language. A proficient student explains that the runes clearly state that ten coins must be placed in the circle to activate it, but another student on the opposite side of it states that twenty coins are needed.

Looking to Sho, the professor considered a moment, then pulled out some tools and ran some calculations. First he took down the circumference, then the diameter. He leaned back on his heels, pleased that Pi was as it ought to be. So things were going right. He then explained to the students what he did and gave an impromptu lesson on Pi.

Once that was done he considered the students who suggested ten and twenty. "Please excuse my dear aunt sally," he said, nodding a bit. "Alright, let's start crunching some numerical ideas. Start with factoring this. If we wanted to meet halfway between the two how many would we use?"

"So." He grinned. "If one person thinks that this requires ten coins, and the other says it requires twenty, how could this be resolved using sets?"

"Two sets of ten, but...wouldn't that still trigger something if one is wrong?"

"Perhaps. If we put both sets in simultaneously." He smirked. "Soh Cah Toa."

"Oh."

Link understood Hylian as well as the basics of the Gerudo language and still had trouble understanding his Maths professor.

Even when he was pretty sure he understood the concept the guy was trying to teach.

"So, what do you think will happen class, if we put in two sets of ten with a gap between equalling point two seconds?"

Link had no idea. He just privately hoped it didn't involve dying painfully.

When no one supplied an answer, he pulled out coins from his pocket, separating into two handfuls of ten and ten. "Shall we find out?"

Link side-eyed his fellow students. Hopefully no horrible demons would arise.

"Link, as the star student of the day, add yourself to this," he held out ten of the coins to the boy.

Link's ears dropped a faction of an inch.

"Uh, are you sure about that sir?"

[grim_heaper]

"Of course, you earned it." He did a quick calculation of their relative heights under his breath. "Drop it exactly one half second after I drop mine. Then stand back."

Link nodded, feeling very unsure about this. But, it wasn't as if this was going to summon a dead hand or anything.

...he hoped.

He held the coins out, ready.

I so wanted to say he'd drop them one by one, but he dropped them all at once.

"Any tree can drop an apple. I'll drop the freaking moon!" With that, and a smirk, he dropped his coins.

"So zetta lame. Alright, so the answer wasn't zero, ten, or twenty, as we've tried all of those sets already. So let's circle back around to the start of the equation and find our beauty."

There was a distinct lack of a familiar "success" sound, so Link figured they'd failed.

"Why not thirty? Y'know, add all three?"

This was actually the sort of puzzle he'd found more enjoyable in temples. Sequences and patterns, as opposed to giant plates with spikes falling on his head.

Or, goddesses forbid, changing water levels one hundred times.

"OR maybe it says different things on different ends of the circle? Like on your end it does say ten and your end it says twenty?" Link looked between the two original students, eyes bright.

"Which could be addition or multiplication. Way to sum things up." Which hadn't been his idea. but was worth trying. So he tossed in ten more.

Link watched, ears perked slightly.

Now that he knew that immediate failure didn't equate to immediate death Link was much more curious.

As did Sho, not that the prospect of immediate death phased him, mind. He was already dead.

Link supposed that the next route would be to put 200 coins down, but, that was a lot of money.

He preferred to stay living, since he was pretty sure Zelda needed him when they finally figured out a way to send them all home.

"Alright, so here's the math kids, x=2 obvious ways to go from here and they both need the same zetta thing. So! Consider this your midterm. Go get me as many coins as you can... from this world and others. Whoever brings the most back... gets an A. T= 6 hours. Fail and face erasure." Old habit.

But that grin means that last part had to be a joke, right?

With the extra coins dropped, a portal opened.

Sho stared through at the large feathered creatures and grinned. "Now that's some zetta awesome noise."

Link gaped at the portal and at the enormous monsters.

"Whoa. Hope they stay there."

"Why?" Sho asked, already planning to step through as he checked to make sure his pin was in place and to unhitch his bullhorn. "I plan to see how many of those integers I can get to join the set of my familiar and my dragon. Coming?"
