Discussion of dancing with Xion

Xion would find Lea sitting on a bench under a tree, sketching something on a pad of paper. He'd look at it, frown thoughtfully, then erase a bit and redo it until he was satisfied. It was still a little while til sunset, but he was always up for a little chat.

"You mean since there don't seem to be aby moogles here?" she teased lightly as she came to sit by him. Lots of shopkeepers but no Moogles. She kept checking the dorm for one, sure he was around somewhere.

"Hey, people besides moogles can make stuff like that," Lea said, amused. "In fact my dad used to; he ran the accessory shop back home and made a lot of his own stuff. It's just that moogles just happen to be really good at it, and are more versatile than most people."

"Your... dad... ran an accessory shop?" she asked, head tilting. She still didn't fully understand parents, but she did want to hear more about her friend from before she knew him. Even if that hurt sometimes for some reason.

"Yeah," Lea said. "He was pretty good at it too. I mean we never had tons of munny, but we always had plenty."

"Anyway, did you need something?", he said. "Not that I don't like just hanging out with you, but you're usually doing other stuff in the afternoons, so I figured if you came looking for me there's probly a reason."

She wanted to tease and joke and just have fun with Axel. But she also wanted answers. And this was something that she could ask without hurting him. "People keep trying to explain this dancing mission to me," she said, staring out ahead. "But I don't understand it."

"Well it's not a mission, really," Lea said. "More just for fun. But it's important to a lot of people so a lot of time and energy gets devoted to it."

"Anyway, what parts of it are you having trouble understanding", he asked.

"Why is it important? Is it mandatory or isn't it? What in the worlds does moving in a way that was enjoyable to watch mean? It's fighting but not like fighting?" She was so confused.

"It's not mandatory," Lea said. "Which is actually kinda why I haven't mentioned it to you til now; I didn't figure it'd be something you'd like, so you could sit it out, if you wanted. And it's mostly important because of tradition; dances like this are usually held at the same time every year, and people who enjoy those kinds of things spend a lot of time looking forward to it. Kinda like how you always look forward to having ice cream with me at sunset, but just with a way longer interval in between it actually happening."

"As for dancing itself," he said. "Some kinds can look a little like fighting, I guess? But it's done for totally different reasons. Some people do it because it's good exercise, and some people enjoy it as an art form, but for most people, again, it's just for fun."

"But waiting a whole year... you don't know who would even still exist after a year. Or who started existing in that year that would be new."

A year? That was practically a lifetime! That was forever!

"How... is it fun?"

"I hate to break this to you, Xion, but aside from 'Sundered' like us? No one here is likely to pop into existence or vanish in the space of a year," Lea said. "Humans just don't work that way. So having annual events like this is pretty standard for a lot of different occasions."

"I'm not sure how to explain how it's fun, though," he said. "Mostly because 'fun' is really subjective, so it's probably a bit different for everyone. I guess the best answer might be a question; have you ever heard some music playing that just makes you want to move? Like nod your head, tap your fingers or your feet, that kind of thing?"

"Is that because that is how this world works, or because they're Somebodies?" she asked, trying to figure that out.

But to his other question she was able to shake her head. She knew what music was, because of Demyx, but that was her only real exposure to it. and the only moving that ever inspired from her was to leave the room before she was noticed, or to move out of the way.

"A bit of both," Lea said. "Humans in most worlds aren't just... kind of brought into existence in full sized bodies like Nobodies or Replicas. They're born as tiny babies, and then grow up gradually over about 18 to 20 years or so. So the fact that they were born that way probably makes them more stable. But I think it might just be our world that has physical and magical laws that would allow Nobodies and Replicas to be created like we were to begin with. So it's also sort of how this world works too."

He scratched his head though regarding her lack of musical experience. "Which kinda prove my point," he said. "Sometimes I hear music like that and it makes me want to move, and that's why I think that dancing is fun. But if you tried it, you might find a whole different reason why you liked it. Or you might not like it at all. It's just one of those things there's no one right answer to."

She stared at him wide eyed. "Real people can live for twenty years?" she asked, stunned. She was almost a year and a half old. Twenty seemed like FOREVER.

For the sake of not being there all day, Lea opted not to mention that humans could live far longer than that and just nodded. "Yep," he said. "Frankly I'm pretty sure Nobodies and Replicas can too, if left to their own devices. It's just that- even discounting the various magical entanglements that we were involved in- life with the Organization tended to be pretty violent, so life expectancy there wasn't that great."

"Wow...." she whispered, a bit awed by the enormity of that. Then she blinked and looked at him. "But you said those kids had a whole month off. Is that because they are expected to live so much longer? Or..." No it couldn't be, could it? "Do... they get a whole month... every year?" She was putting this stuff together. Slowly, perhaps, but she was getting there.

"That's generally how it works, yeah," Lea said. "One month per year. Not sure if that's the case around here though, since it's coming up on summer, and I haven't heard anything about it. Might have to see about asking someone."

"What would we even do with a whole month off, here?" she asked, softly, still a bit stunned by the enormity of it.

"Honestly? No idea," Lea said. "Not sure if we'd be allowed to leave the city on our own, but I'm sure we'd find something to do inside it though. I mean the people who live here have to have stuff to do for fun, right?"

"Unless they only just do classes and what passes for missions here?"

Lea chuckled. "Nah, that's just at the school," he said. "The rest of the people in the city have other sorts of jobs. But jobs usually give people some days off, so they probably have stuff to do for entertainment. I could probably look into that, see what's available."

"If you want to." She still didn't think he'd find anything they could do with even a single whole day off other than sleep and sunset ice cream.

Well sleep and ice cream would certainly be involved, but he can find other stuff to do too.

Anyway, he nodded... then chuckled slightly as he realized something. "Man we've gotten pretty far off the original question, haven't we?", he said.

She laughed a bit and pushed lightly at his shoulder. "When don't we?"

He laughed a bit more at her playful shove. "Yeah, our conversations tend to become a mass of tangents any more," he said.

"But regardless, no, the dance isn't mandatory, or anything like a mission," he said. "And you don't have to go if you don't want to, even if random people start pestering you to go with them."
