Dance Dance Reprobation
Neither tree nor stone form the Promenade now. It is instead a long bridge over a shallow and brilliant pool, the gentle ripples of which catch the afternoon sun and scatter it into a million highlights that play over the Great Hall, the bridge, and those who walk down it. There is no formal receiving line, merely a gentle procession of people across the bridge at whatever speed feels comfortable, slowly making their way to the Great Hall. The Great Hall itself has been enchanted to be completely invisible while one is inside it, save for the outline of doors so people can actually find their way out through means other than smacking their noses into the invisible walls till they find a place with no resistance. Thus the twilight for which the ball is named will show all around the dancers, while they are protected from any errant breezes, faint hints of rain, or slime monsters that might otherwise threaten the festivity. Come in. Find your date and get comfortable. The fun is just beginning.
But as the dance progresses, they play something for everyone. Martial waltzes and slow dance ballroom numbers. Powerful tunes to lose yourself in, and gentle melodies that slip beneath conversation and encourage intimacy and closeness. Professors Trammel and King treat everyone to an exhibition of what an Earth resident might call 'swing dancing on amphetamines' and many students do call 'the closest I have ever come to death'. No pause for speeches, no announcements or interruptions -- just a steady stream of music, bringing dates and lovers together in dance, as the sun sets and casts the room into gentle and romantic twilight. Also a dolphin and a whale are swimming through the floor and they, too, are unmistakably dancing. If this is the weirdest thing you've seen all night, you need your eyes checked.
At one end of the table, an owl the size of a cupboard sits on a perch, serenely watching the varied drinks laid out for consumption. 'Spiking the punch' is so cliche that no one is going to pretend it won't happen or the students will behave on their honor, so here you get a chaperone. Even so, this whole area is a popular gathering spot for those between dances or partners, drawing steady attention throughout the night.

[Amazingly enough, Webby still hasn't realized that Louie's intention on asking her to the dance was romantic in nature. Bless her. But she does figure she should be polite enough to wait outside for him, so she tries to kill time by rocking back and forth on her heels, hands behind her, eyes on the night sky. After a delightful shopping trip with a friend, she's dressed as such.]

Sunset's single and content with that at the moment, though she enters with a small group of friends. She gives everyone an encouraging smile, marveling at the brilliant stars. They're in the twilight...a thought that brings a fond little smile to her face. She'd definitely like another chance to dance with a certain nerdy friend of hers someday!
But now is now. She'll happily wave to anyone she sort-of recognizes, a simple but elegant teal dress swishing at her heels.

Dancing is Sunset's bread and butter! She happily sways to the beat of all the faster songs, confident and proud. She's had plenty of practice, and she's happy to try to teach anyone who looks like they might need some encouraging. Expect her to offer a hand and a smile if you might need a friend.
The slower songs have her moving to exit the floor with a telltale blush, though. She's so not ready for that yet...or is she?

Of course there's always the food table. She's very happy with the vegetarian spread, and always ready to greet everyone with a friendly smile or a compliment on their looks.
She hasn't imbibed yet, fortunately...but that could change, of course.

Kaiba, being Kaiba, has saved up and purchased the fanciest dress robes he can afford. Nowhere near as expensive as his native wardrobe, unfortunately, but still with the silver. His normally blue accent pieces are closer to a lavender shade tonight, because he's wearing his heart on his sleeve as he strides into the room.
His 'heart', of course, being a short human male with a smile. Yup. That sure is Yugi Mutou, and they sure look involved. This is public knowledge now, and Kaiba doesn't care what you think.

Yugi is of course far more sociable than he is, so there are plenty of times when Kaiba is alone. He usually takes a small snack from the table, maybe a few mouthfuls of punch...
...and maybe it's the punch, but he's not immediately rebuffing most people who approach him tonight. No, it would do him some good to socialize some. Especially with those who are close to Yugi, for...reasons that are unimportant.
"Enjoying yourself?"
That's about as polite as it gets for Kaiba, but give him time. And more punch. With enough of both, he might even accept a dance invitation with someone he sufficiently respects.

Even as practiced as he is with mandatory social occasions, he has his limits. He steps outside and fastens his cloak around him at one point, tucking into a nook and watching the stars.
But of course, being this school, he has to pull his feet up when something small scurries by. Either someone's lost their familiar or there's a dangerous experiment on the loose, probably. He sighs, determined to ignore it.

[With a bit of help, Eleven has found himself dressed in a long, cream colored coat and light blue shirt with dark slacks. His hair starts out tied behind his head in the world's shortest ponytail, but threads of it gradually escape the binding as the night wears on.
Having only recently learned to dance the most essential steps, Eleven's nerves get the better him through the first few hours. He dances slow, hesitant dances with Isabel and a select few people he already knows. But it's not nearly as difficult as it seems and after awhile, he's even enjoying himself more than he's worrying about stepping wrong. In fact, as some of the catchier music begins to play and creeps under his skin with a growing itch, he finds himself urged to dance quicker beats. He falters- then grins and turns into a sudden spin with a laugh.
It's not so unlike sparring, after all.
He grows bolder, heart beating wildly to a rhythm that's already taken hold. With a breathless smile, he offers his hand to the next person he spots without a partner]

The only thing better than dancing his cares away to an endless stream of wondrous music was the equally endless buffet. Just looking at it made him feel as though he hadn't eaten in days.
Eleven made a point of stopping over at least once every few songs to grab something delicious and refreshing. It gave him a chance to watch the other partners dancing and admire the sheer walls of the Great Hall as they fell to dusk and the twilight hours the ball was named for.
The combination of creativity, magic, music, and energy enchanted him, and something like joy burst through his chest as he took a sip of his drink.

[As Atem makes his way across the bridge he's mindful of those around them being careful not to hurry them along. He's wearing a suit for a change, though he's already removed the jacket and has it about his shoulders so it's more like a cape.
Some habits die hard. Also, since he's been reunited with the Millennium puzzle, he'll also be wearing that artifact around his neck. Curiously he is there without someone by his side. Despite coming to the ball alone, he's determined to try and make the most of it. This ball is only a beginning in it's own way.At some point he stops and leans against the railing to look over the side marveling at all the work that went into transforming this place into something more fantastical. ]

[Most of Atem's time is spent.... watching others hit the dance floor. Sure, he had his lessons with Hendrik and the others but somehow he still ended up hugging the transparent walls. That's okay. This was fine. This wasn't really his night to shine, so to speak.
It was Yugi's...... and Kaiba's. There would be other festivities and festivals over the year. He was mostly just here to make amends for something foolish he had said and done earlier. Not appearing would have been only served to make the other party involved feel worse.So... here it was. One night, and then things could really get back to normal, and that would be the end of it]

Lena had been a bit surprised when Huey had asked her to the Twilight Ball, but honestly, she couldn't complain. She'd heard Louie had asked Webby, and she figured that Huey felt like being a third wheel as much as she did. So at least if the two of them went together, the four of them could still hang out without anyone feeling left out.
So while balls and fancy dresses weren't really her thing, Lena had managed to find a black dress with purple highlights that she thought was pretty cool.
Though she couldn't help feeling a bit self-conscious as she entered the Great Hall, because she was definitely out of her element with this kind of thing. But even she had to admit that the hall looked amazing.

Lena had mostly tuned out during the headmaster's speech, but her attention returned when the music started. And once again, she had to admit that the musical selection was really good. There were plenty of songs that had her following along, even if she wasn't out on the dance floor.

Well, Huey had asked her. And while she figured there wasn't for any romantic reason, which was the reason for the ball, that didn't mean they couldn't have some fun.

Fluttershy couldn't help feeling a bit nervous as she waited for Yuki at the bridge leading to the Great Hall. Though she was sure he had asked her as a friend, the fact that he was her "date" still had her heart skipping a bit.
So she waited, all dressed up and her hair styled in a way that she hoped would be appropriate for a ball like this.
Arrival - Open
Fluttershy gasped as she stepped inside, even though it was almost hard to tell the difference between inside or out. With the illusion of the open space, with nothing but the glittering stars above and the scenery around them decorating the hall, the site was truly breathtaking.
"Oh wow..." she murmured, turning to try and take it all in with wide eyes. "I can see why the Twilight Ball is such a big event here."

There was so much good music, Fluttershy couldn't help dancing to most of the songs that were playing. Normally shy and reserved, she didn't seem to think of anyone watching as her body moved to the rhythm, enjoying losing herself to the music. And she was more than happy to dance with anyone who asked for a dance with her.
Even when she was taking a break, her head was bobbing or her toes were tapping along with the beat. And every once in a while, the whale that was out on the dance floor would swim over to her, and Fluttershy would giggle and spin as the whale swam around her, as if dancing with her, before the whale returned to the dolphin's side.

With all the dancing, it was important to recharge sometimes. So Fluttershy could be found sometimes at the buffet table, nibbling here and there on the vegetarian-friendly options available.

So he got dressed and headed to the Ball, not sure why he felt nervous other than the fact that this was his first time doing anything like this. He also had a corsage for Fluttershy in a small see-through box which reminded him of her hair.
There were just so many people and Yuki tried to look for her. And in the end, he just started to look for her signature pink locks. Except for this time, they looked different, arranged as they were on her head.
He saw her looking around and the green dress made her look like a princess straight out of a fairy tale. And so for a moment, he had to take a breath. When he did get close enough, he politely stood a small respectful distance as he'd come up behind her.

What happens when an eleven-year-old in a seventeen-year-old's body picks out his own tuxedo? Look no further than the Hylian at the buffet table. Not that they had any clothing like this in Hyrule, especially not the Kokiri Forest.
Green coat, yellow trousers, pink striped bow-tie. Complete with matching green top hat and fancy cane. In some worlds, he could be mistake for a children's breakfast cereal mascot.
Link was quite content to spend this occasion grazing at the food table. Dancing didn't strike him as terribly interesting, but, he was more than willing to talk with people who were able to contain their laughter at his poor fashion choices.

True to the adage that an idol belongs to all their fans and no one in particular, Tenn arrives dressed in elegant black and gold attire and date-less. The sparkle in his eyes says he's here to dance, and he's not going to be exclusive.
From his performances in the city, his talent is well-known even before he steps on the floor; his grace and energy instantly in play in every style, professionally and emotionally engaged as each song takes hold of the room.
At first, his gaze often drifted to the musicians, curious to see their master performance. But steadily, his attention is captured by scanning the dance floor in search of good partners… though he won’t turn down invitations, either, and is open to helping the shy or new in finding their own rhythm as the evening progresses.
Conquest of the Buffet Table
Only after the 'swing dancing on amphetamines' picked out the weak and challenged the strong does Tenn consent to a rest. (Tenn feared not death. It was a good death. Very invigorating. Also, he’s starving now.)
He proves to be a swift but delicate eater, his gloves tucked aside as he licks his fingertips like a satisfied cat, eyes half-closed in the wake of the blackberry tart. Then a platter of strawberry-topped frosted cakes arrives, and that blissful spell is broken to indulge in another. Fast-filling plate in hand, he’ll express the virtues of the desserts to anyone who may ask.
"That one tastes like apricots, but mildly spicy. The ones dusted with brown sugar beside it are sweeter, though, I do not recommend having them with punch. There’s a cinnamon and caramel flavored drink at the end of the table that compliments it excellently."
Elsewhere, A Rendezvous
As the night slows to peaceful couple dances, Tenn discreetly escapes the ball with a plate piled high with vegetables – including the broccoli he so loathes. (Well, it’s not the weirdest thing you’ve seen tonight.)
But that may not be the last you see of him. Should you pass through the wooded and wilder paths around campus, you might hear his voice carrying through the night air.
"…I'd rather not be caught off guard again. Don't look at me like that, this isn't a bribe... I appreciate your help. I'll need it in the coming month." Oddly, there is no voice responding to him, only the rustle of leaves. The source seems to be beyond a tall hedge, in a small clearing that encircles a pond.
Maybe it’s best to tune out of the private conversation… though, that would be the boring option, wouldn’t it?
Elsewhere?
He likes the rays best through the branches of the trees tonight, so he has decided to wander paths that lead into the forest to soak in that atmosphere... and hears the voice just ahead. Though he wants not to intrude, Kuja isn't inclined to turn back either, so he follows the path along toward the pond until he comes to the clearing, eyes turned to the other and... whoever he might be talking to.
"Evening," he'll greet with a nod. He doesn't have to interrupt, but neither does he feel like eavesdropping. As much as one can out in the open like this. His clothing is dark, but it's not like they would miss his silver hair in all that moonlight.

Dust was a colossal party-pooper.
But the way he sees it -- for one, he's got no business going to a ball that's all about romance and togetherness. Even if he could do romance, he was the only one of his kind here. So well away from the Great Hall and civilization at large, Dust focused on training instead. From a distance, people might see blue and red lights spinning and whirling through the air, the glowing runes on his two swords betraying his location.

Eleven was otherwise occupied, spinning around the ballroom with some new partner or another. Isabel figured she could step out for a moment or two, and not leave him thinking she'd ditched him (because she wouldn't, they'd been having fun, darn it!)
Still, she wasn't about to harass Dust empty-handed; she raided the buffet table first, piling a plate with meat-filled finger sandwiches and the tiny sausages wrapped in bacon and coated with barbecue sauce that seemed ubiquitous at every party. A small pile of cheese cubes followed that, and then a few of the cookies and petit fours that rounded out the menu--but no actual cake?
Weird. Well, Isabel hadn't been there long enough to figure out all of the customs. She scooped up a cup of punch, shouldered her way out, and darted out to where he was practicing.
"Hey," she said, by way of interruption as she arrived. "Figured since you were training, you could probably use a snack."

Some of Adelai's penguins certainly are, and seem to be having quite the time of their life, but Noa pays them no mind. Instead, chewing lightly on a cucumber sandwich, he keeps skimming the crowd...frustration building visibly in his eyes.
"Tch..." He scowls. "Where on earth is he..."

Noa found who he was looking for.
"Alright. We don't know how long we'll have...but it'll be our best chance to seek out where that thing went," Noa whispers to his companion- ironically, a dragon themselves. "That dragon was a bit too familiar," he explains to his partner, "And if we stand a chance at questioning such a thing, you're probably our best bet. ...Wouldn't you say?"
Noa that's kinda species-istSpyro is the one he's speaking to, and apparently they have a plan to go on a mini-adventure of their own.

Rather than find something special to wear to the ball, Louie had enlisted Professor King’s Help in outfitting him, with the only specification given being “I like green, I don’t know.” - as a result, Louie had arrived alongside Webby in some Gekronus Maius robes that were quite poorly tailored to his small duck frame. But he could dance without tripping, and that was what mattered. Louie was the least talented dance of his three brothers, perhaps, but the same skills that allowed him to swim in money meant he had a certain level of grace? Coordinatation? Honestly, sheer willpower had helped him swim through the bin, but he was finding there was something transferable.
But the decent dancer of a duck was most often dancing alone. Don’t expect him to admit it, but he might like some company.

Uncle Scrooge had taught Louie well, and he could be found at the food table, filling his school bag with any treats that didn’t look as if they’d make too much of a mess. Anyone who seemed baffled, troubled, or disgusted by this would get a flat look.
“What? Free food.” As if school meals weren’t normally free...

If Louie was a bit jumpy that evening, because part of him was perpetually expecting that ghostly dragon to show up through the floors.

Huey was definitely getting more used to this world, and dances? Dances he could do. He's gotten himself a mostly formal outfit, and had walked in at first with Lena, as Louie had asked Webby and he hadn't wanted either of them to feel left out. That's not being a good friend, right?
Though they came in together they weren't together the whole time, and in fact Huey can be found here and there still marvelling over everything... magic about this place. Most of all he seems caught by the twilight, staring at it through the invisible Hall. What a fitting sight for a lovely site like this.

...That was certainly a speech, wasn't it? Anyway- definitely not making a note about "river" and "Bison" in a notepad stowed under his cap, NOPE -Huey spends most of his time on the sidelines, watching most of the others have their dance. Part of it, alright most of it, was he still didn't know many people yet and felt awkward, but he was perfectly content to observe the event. It had been haphazardly put together (when measured against his own Huey Duck, Party Master planning skills anyway, to anyone else this dance would be going well), but there was plenty to enjoy all the same, and every now and then he amused himself by identifying the different dance steps people were using. Tango, waltz, one ambitious couple performing the paso doble, there's an improvisational pair, and then of course the uh, "swing dancing on amphetamines" exhibition.
But of course, while spending time not on the floor, there's also-

Someone must've missed the memo about "light food not weighing you down" because Huey has gotten himself a big ol' plateful. Fish, an arrangement of meat slices and cheeses, a sandwich or two, and a neat stack of cucumber slices that practically reformed the cucumber they'd come from. With a cup of punch to go for it.
This plate is on an empty chair beside him so he doesn't have to try and juggle carrying it, eating, and holding his drink all in one, but that doesn't mean he isn't open to conversation. Just have to get him between bites.

Ballroom dancing? Blech. Formal wear and frilly dresses? For the birds. Quite literally in this case, with all the talking ducks around. Kazuma's disdain for the whole shebang totally had nothing to do with the fact that he'd only been at the Academy for less than a month, meaning he barely knew anyone, let alone knowing someone enough to formally invite or be invited to the thing. Nevermind either the fact that he doesn't have anything close to the social confidence to meet and chat up practically strangers at a fancy dance party. Nope. That had nothing to do with it.
So instead of getting all fancied up with a frou-frou suit or tux, Kazuma is instead dressed in a more rouge-ish, hiding-in-the-shadows sort of getup. Cause that's exactly what he's doing as he lurks in the darker shadow of a nearby faculty building, watching the flashily dressed and fashionably late saunter over the bridge as the ball's namesake twilight peaks.
No, instead of ballroom dances and cucumber sandwiches, Kazuma is looking forward to forbidden knowledge and juicy secrets tonight. A lot a normally restricted places are woefully under guarded right about now, so tonight is prime time for the inquisitive sort to find out the whys.
With a soft sigh for no one in particular, he turns away from the lights and laughter to head for darker, more secretive endeavors.

Yotsuyu and Jecht Double Attack
When you look as good as these two do, you flaunt it.
Believe it or not, Jecht had his chest covered today, or at least most of it -- his brilliant black-and-red dress robes might be open to about the end of his sternum, but otherwise they did a magnificent job of covering but not concealing his build. Somehow they seemed to suit him despite how much the general idea of robes did not; thank some effort put into finding them by both him and his date.
Speaking of said date? Yotsuyu knew perfectly well how to make herself appeal. Her dress was equally stunning in shades of crimson and gold with black accents, and most of her raven-black hair had been swept back into a bun, leaving her bangs and two long tendrils to hang from either side. Anything more than that would have gilded the lily; sometimes, simplicity itself was elegance.
With her quiet dignity and his easygoing grin, they made quite the couple as they sauntered on in like they owned the place.

Having left her date (such as he was) stuffing his maw at the laden buffet table, Yotsuyu snapped her fan open, fluttering it in front of her face and watching the others swirling around the room with narrowed eyes--half-lidded with amusement, this time, instead of annoyance or anger. The keep itself was more fascinating, transformed as it was, but for now, she was searching for a dance partner. If this was supposed to be a party, well, she was not about to miss her chance at the festivities!

Okay, so talking to Noa and Eleven about this dance thing had only confused her terribly, and the books that Axel found her hadn't helped much. So Xion had come to observe and learn. Mostly because she still was unclear if coming was mandatory.
The invisible walls made it hard for her to hug the shadows, but she was doing her best to be as invisible as possible. Thankfully her dark coat blended into the twilight better than it had in the snow when she first arrived.
Sadly, however... watching was not making anything any more clear than it had been. She... was so confused. So very. Very. confused.
