Dance Dance Reprobation
Neither tree nor stone form the Promenade now. It is instead a long bridge over a shallow and brilliant pool, the gentle ripples of which catch the afternoon sun and scatter it into a million highlights that play over the Great Hall, the bridge, and those who walk down it. There is no formal receiving line, merely a gentle procession of people across the bridge at whatever speed feels comfortable, slowly making their way to the Great Hall. The Great Hall itself has been enchanted to be completely invisible while one is inside it, save for the outline of doors so people can actually find their way out through means other than smacking their noses into the invisible walls till they find a place with no resistance. Thus the twilight for which the ball is named will show all around the dancers, while they are protected from any errant breezes, faint hints of rain, or slime monsters that might otherwise threaten the festivity. Come in. Find your date and get comfortable. The fun is just beginning.
But as the dance progresses, they play something for everyone. Martial waltzes and slow dance ballroom numbers. Powerful tunes to lose yourself in, and gentle melodies that slip beneath conversation and encourage intimacy and closeness. Professors Trammel and King treat everyone to an exhibition of what an Earth resident might call 'swing dancing on amphetamines' and many students do call 'the closest I have ever come to death'. No pause for speeches, no announcements or interruptions -- just a steady stream of music, bringing dates and lovers together in dance, as the sun sets and casts the room into gentle and romantic twilight. Also a dolphin and a whale are swimming through the floor and they, too, are unmistakably dancing. If this is the weirdest thing you've seen all night, you need your eyes checked.
At one end of the table, an owl the size of a cupboard sits on a perch, serenely watching the varied drinks laid out for consumption. 'Spiking the punch' is so cliche that no one is going to pretend it won't happen or the students will behave on their honor, so here you get a chaperone. Even so, this whole area is a popular gathering spot for those between dances or partners, drawing steady attention throughout the night.

Sunset's single and content with that at the moment, though she enters with a small group of friends. She gives everyone an encouraging smile, marveling at the brilliant stars. They're in the twilight...a thought that brings a fond little smile to her face. She'd definitely like another chance to dance with a certain nerdy friend of hers someday!
But now is now. She'll happily wave to anyone she sort-of recognizes, a simple but elegant teal dress swishing at her heels.
it's dance magic
Dancing is Sunset's bread and butter! She happily sways to the beat of all the faster songs, confident and proud. She's had plenty of practice, and she's happy to try to teach anyone who looks like they might need some encouraging. Expect her to offer a hand and a smile if you might need a friend.
The slower songs have her moving to exit the floor with a telltale blush, though. She's so not ready for that yet...or is she?
mix it up
Of course there's always the food table. She's very happy with the vegetarian spread, and always ready to greet everyone with a friendly smile or a compliment on their looks.
She hasn't imbibed yet, fortunately...but that could change, of course.
Dance Magic
"So are you having fun?" Fluttershy asked as she moved to the music.

Well. Not entirely. Seeing all the couples has stirred up some old feelings in her that she clearly still needed to work through...but she could put that aside for one night. Her friends' happiness was the most important thing, always.
She bobbed along at her side with a smile. "You two look amazing together. I'm so happy for you!"

She had to smile. "All I'm saying is that maybe happiness is right in front of you, if that's what you both want. Don't force it, but don't just dismiss it out of hand either."
She sure was one to talk about things like that. But that was all right. She spun gracefully on her heel, laughing.

While she had never actively pursued a relationship before, she wasn't opposed to having one. And Yuki was really sweet, and had helped her out more than once.
no subject
She smiled softly. "And I'll be right here cheering you from the back."
no subject
Then she glanced at Sunset, her smile fading a bit. "What about you, though?"
no subject
Sunset's smile faded too, but she was determined not to let her mood bring her down for long.
"Honestly, I haven't really thought much about dating since Flash. You know how that ended. I know I'm a different person now, and you're the only one here who knows just how bad I was, but when someone loves you it's so easy to hurt them. I'd never try to, not anymore, but...I guess part of me is still scared."
Her steps slowed, and she squeezed Fluttershy.
"I'll be okay. I just need some more time."
no subject
Then she gave Sunset an extra squeeze.
"Because you are different now...and you do deserve to be happy."
no subject
Gosh, this was embarrassing. Sunset clung to her tightly.
"You're the best. I'm so lucky that you gave me another chance...all of you did, to be the best person I could be. I promise you I won't waste it."
She pulled back with a tiny smile, squeezing her hands. Ready to dance some more?
no subject
"I know you won't."
With a gentle squeeze of Sunset's hands of her own, she then giggled softly and gently spun her, once again moving in time with the music.
arrival
Webby runs up to her friend, all smiles and sunshine.
"Isn't everything pretty? Isn't this great? Are all dances like this? THIS IS GUNNA BE FUN!"
no subject
Sunset greets her with a bright smile. That enthusiasm is infectious as always.
"I've never seen one with a sparkling pool or a starry sky before...but yes, it's always fun. Did you come with someone?"
no subject
"Did you come with someone too?"
no subject
It's mostly true. Her smile's convincing enough.
"So you're gonna dance the night away with him, right?"
no subject
"I want to dance with everyone! We can dance too, if you want!"
no subject
Sunset smiled brightly at her.
"It's not all about dating, after all. Like you, I'm just here to have fun with my friends."
no subject
But she says it cheerfully before grabbing her friend by the wrist and dragging her to the dance floor.
"Let's go!"
no subject
[ She laughs and follows Webby, happily bouncing along at her side. ]
Wow, you're moving so fast!

[life is good!!!]

[ She glances up at the sky. ]
Did you look up at the stars? They always seem to be at their most beautiful on nights like this.

Arrival and/or dancing because he's game for both.
"I hope you can forgive me for not being a flower guy," he said sheepishly. "That circlet I had was for Rounder's date. I brought this for you." With that, he offered Sunset a handmade barrette, clearly something he'd worked on himself. He was pleased to see that not only did it go with her coloring, but it complimented the dress nicely as well.
"I am planning to cut in on Rounder at least once, too, though I'd like to save a couple dances for you, if you don't mind?"
no subject
It was a beautiful night. She spun around happily, taking in all the sights, and eventually came to view the barrette. It was lovely. Symbolic, too. She giggled and clipped it in her hair.
"Of course! I'd love to. Don't worry, I've got plenty of people to see...but I know we're going to show them how it's done."
She winked and nudged him. Honestly, Cliff was doing pretty well for a date.
no subject
Yes, he knew exactly why, really, but Sunset didn't seem the type to make him feel self-conscious. So Cliff didn't want to admit it. He was having no problems with talking at the moment, it seemed, and that made him happy.
"So since we're going to show them how it's done, would you care to dance, my lady?" Oh, Cliff might not be willing to show too many others the courtly side, but it felt seamless at the moment.
