Plus one Class thread - OTA

Who: Minamimoto and whatever unfortunates wander into his classes
Where: The maths classroom, his... uh... renovated arts classroom, and the field for P.E.
When: Weekdays on and off all month.
Warnings: bad math puns and threats of erasure.

He nodded. “Building almost every zetta thing. Tables, buildings, bridges. Ready for the next skill that goes with angles?”

"Okay, sure," Link nodded.

“Repeat after me. Soh Cah Toa.”

"Is that some kind of incantation?" What would an incantation have to do with math?

"The magic of math. A simple phrase that helps with everything you might ever need to build."

Fair enough, Link figured. As long as it didn't summon the undead or anything, Link didn't mind trying it.

"Alright. Um. Soh Cah Toa?"

He nodded, grabbed some black spray paint and covered the walls with

Then he grabbed the purple and went to another wall and started painting triangles. "Let's say You were going to build a slide for some zeroes. You know how tall the ladder is, you know how long the slide is, but some factoring hectopascal is not asking you how much room they need to leave for the slide itself. So you need to know how far the bottom of the slide will be from the bottom of the stairs so they don't put a factorial swingset there. With me so far?"

Link nodded slowly. Okay, building a slide, that made sense---and figuring the distance between the stairs and bottom of the slide.

"So since the ladder will be upright, we know that is going to be a right angle, ninety degrees, right?"

"Right...because it's not leaning and the ground is probably flat."

He nodded. "Exactly. So you need to figure out the bottom side for the length. Now SOH CAH TOA is all about the right angle," he circled it with the spray paint, then he added letters to each side. He identified the names that went with the letters as he did. "This is the opposite, this is the adjacent, this is the hypotenuse. In a right triangle, som long as you know two sides, you always can calculate the third. So you know the hypotenuse, and you know the opposite. So you need the adjacent. So what you need is Sine. SOH. Sine = Opposite over Hypotenuse. You done fractions before, kid?"

"Uh. Well, not more than halves, quarters, and thirds."

The latter of which he had an actual reminder of on the skin of his left hand.

"Alright well here is an easy clue for fractions, you ready?" He asked with a grin grabbing the can he had used for division the previous day.

Link watched quietly with interest.

He drew a line across then a letter A and a letter B, the A above the line, the B under.

"So. Fractions are one number over the other, yes?"

Prepare to have your mind blown, kid.

"Right. Um....parts and the whole?" He mimed the top and bottom.

He nodded. "Guess what else it is?" he asked with a smirk.

"I'm not sure?"

With the same colour he transformed each of the letters into a dot. One above the line, one below. "What does it look like now, kid?"

"Oh, um, that's an obelus."

He smirked and clapped his shoulder. "Right. That means the fraction? Is just division!"

Link blinked for a minute.

"Oh. Oh, okay!"

Sho beamed. "Soh Cah Toa."
