He actually seemed proud as he nodded and grabbed a fourth color. "25 X 4 =" he asked as he wrote it, dancing back after. This kid never got to school before? What a factorial waste.

If things had been slightly different, and his parents hadn't died in the Hyrule's Civil War, Link likely would have had a tutor at the very least.

(Saria hadn't done too bad, truth be told, despite his less than stellar spelling and reading skills. But, there were real world applications for math, even in a society of Fairy Children, while books were not something that they had access to. )

He studied the problem for a moment and mentally pictured the problem in groups of Deku seeds. Then, he wrote "100" with a little more confidence.

Sho nodded and started moving with multiple cans, using the same colour for each function as he used before, until there was a brightly written equation on the wall.

1 + (14÷7) =

And then he stepped back. "If you need a hint, you already got one."

And now Link was puzzled. Fourteen divided by seven he could understand, but the addition of the plus one and parenthesis threw him.

He studied the colors for a moment, trying to work it out. One plus fourteen would make fifteen, but, you couldn't divide that seven ways equally. Someone would be short-changed.

He knew that you couldn't divide fourteen eight ways evenly, either.

Maybe since it was all enclosed it was supposed to be separate? Then...that would be two. And then....one plus two?

Link scrunched his nose briefly, but, wrote a three with some considerable hesitation.

He nodded and clapped him on the back. "Please excuse my dear aunt sally," he said, grinning. "Parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. Aunt Sally can always help you figure out the order to do an example of this kind!"

Oh, so that had been right. Link gave a small smile, pleased he hadn't completely messed it up.

And now he understood at least one of Sho's expressions.

"Let's see if you can FOIL this one," he said with a smirk, throwing a new equation onto the wall.

(87+13)(100÷5+12) =

He hadn't shown Link this form of multiplication yet, would the kid catch on? Time to find out.

"Once again you've had your clue, let's see if you can multiply your success." Fine, one more clue.

Link stared for a full minute.

Above the first set of parentheses he wrote a "100" with some certainty. Above the second set he wrote a somewhat less certain "32".

He frowned to himself and wrote "132" as his answer.

Link frowned and crossed out his original answer and wrote "3200" in its place. Which, seemed like an awful big number to him.....

He clapped him on the shoulder again. "Even throwing you a curve you can find your beauty," he said with a smirk. "Not half bad for never having been in school. We'll have you blowing past those zeroes in no time."

Link gave one of his slightly goofy smiles.

Goddesses knew he wasn't exactly scholar material, but, mathematics at least made some sense.

Okay.

Okay. So...fifty-three minus eighteen, that left...thirty-five?

So. So...that meant that 2x + 35 = 51.

Alright. So, that would mean that he had to get rid of that thirty-five. Subtract, right? He'd have to subtract it, to get rid of it. And to get rid of it he'd have to get rid of it twice, so, things wouldn't be lopsided, probably....and if he did that....

2x = 16

Link thought for a moment, chewing his lip, fiddling with a can of spray paint. Squished together meant multiply. But, to get rid of it, he'd have to...divide? So, dividing the two by itself, would get rid of it, and then if he divided the sixteen by two....

Link looked more than a little baffled but wrote an "8" anyway.

Sho clapped his shoulder again. "Now there is a flawless calculation. Alright, let's wrap that for today, meet up tomorrow and we'll revisit angles."

Link mentally filed all this away, as "how you do weird math". Mathematics, out of all academics, made the most sense to him. History, would have been a close second, if it had been about his beloved Hyrule.

He nodded. "Need me to clean anything up?"

"Nah, tomorrow's art class is primer. we'll have some clean walls to work tomorrow. You're going to stomp those zeros, and if anyone gives you any negatives about having not been in school before now? Erase ;um, or send them to me. You got the brains kid, we just gotta bring you up on the actual skills to reach infinity."

Did his professor just tell him to kill any potential bullies he ran into?

Link wasn't sure if that was...kind or creepy or alarming.

Definitely more than a bit of the latter.

He nodded. "Don't subtract your chill over the peanut gallery. There will always be zeros out there trying to drag you down into negatives. But they're all garbage. CRUNCH. Add 'em to the heap." He nodded and swatted his shoulder lightly. "See you tomorrow."
