diatu | Oct Event Log - Portal Chaos

The glowing portal shuddered before slamming shut behind them. It had seemed like a good idea at the time... go through the portal in order to close it from the other side. And it had worked! The portal was closed, the school was safe but the heroes who had worked together to close the portal were now trapped on the other side.

Through the Portal

Silence fell as soon as the portal closed leaving the small group standing in the middle of a crossroads. The ruined archway that ran along the top of the cliffs hinted that there might once have been more of a civilization in this world but now there were only the two pathways, one that ran down the hill into the face of the brilliant red glow that hinted at a flow of magma beyond and one that curved up a hastily cobbled together set of stairs. Of course they were free to stay right where they were as well, here in this craggy passage with the imps peering down at them from every rock and crevasse.

With the battle won most begin to relax. There was the wounded to see to and the damage to the school to repair... but gradually the more tuned in students start to notice the missing. Roll calls that were taken but never completed for some were not around to answer to their names. Then one of the injured students comes to and mentions having seen the missing students disappearing through the imp summoning portal. Clearly they were trapped on the other side and it was up to their fellow students to work out a way to bring them back!

There were many things he could say to that, none of them he wished to. He let out a sigh and hauled himself to his feet. It was hauling almost literally, his ribs were probably bruised and he refused to let his ankle win even as his arm throbbed.

"You just go back to whatever the hell is happening up there," he rasped. "I'll get up there eventually and if I don't-- What's another human gone."

Loki hated it--but Alec had a point. What was the problem with another human gone? They were beneath him, and he could indeed walk right back up to join Crowley and the other demon and the weird-kid and be done. No one would scold him or think less of him.

So why wasn't Loki doing just that....

"Please, do you really think I want to deal with the ridiculous bureaucratic process they'll put us through if we all don't come back? It'll be bad enough if we're not all in one piece, never mind if any of us are missing." Because there would probably be repercussions to them all having jumped through the portal. Better they spin it as something heroic, which meant *all* of them returning.

"They don't really give a damn." He started himself forward since if he was going to talk he was going to have to move at the same time if they wanted to get anywhere.

"I'm not even from here. I don't even belong here. It will just be a stranger gone and one less to worry about. I doubt there will be an inquest and what would you care if there was? You'd just look down your nose at it."

"Yes, I would. But it would be a giant headache and distraction from important things so I'd really rather not bother with it." Loki said, moving to walk with him. "You really do have a martyr complex, don't you? Are you trying to get yourself killed because there are easier ways than all of this."

"A martyr complex assumes I'm putting myself out there with the delusion I'll actually make a difference or the people will remember my heroic sacrifice. Neither of which are true. Do you find it easier to disparage anyone you see as beneath you because you don't know how to make casual conversation?"

If someone was going to insult him, they might as well find the correct term. Whatever that was. Idiot, maybe. In the midst of some damn mid life crises. Trying to pretend he could be something he wasn't. A child in comparison. But a martyr? More like a roadblock, a brief pot hole in the endless stretch of time.

"A heroic complex then." Loki conceded, although the two could overlap. "Regardless, you seem to have a death wish." Loki considered whether he wanted to actually answer the other question.

"So snide commentary it is. In any case the only thing that I have is being a giant idiot." He stared at the stairway, now crawling with imps and sighed.

"Thought I could be useful." He muttered a spell which fizzled out before it did anything. "Forget it." The whip dog was still with him anyway, uncoiling to fit into his hand. He didn't have much energy to even use it but could maybe fight his way up to the top.

"Give me a reason to not be snide, and you'll get better conversation." Loki shot back, before directing his attention to the Imps. "Get out of our way." Once more, reaching out mentally to nudge them to do what he said. It wasn't hard and was very gratifying to see the imps obey.

"That need to be useful is why I say you have a martyr's complex."

"Oh shut up. You'd be snide at anything. I'm not going to live up to your impossible standards just to get-- Forget it." There was no point in arguing. There was no point in doing much of anything.

"Thank you for the help. Sod off."

"And have you go and do something stupid again?" Loki snarked. "Better I play escort, as dull as it is necessary." Hell was most definitely not being a good influence on him. It was too hot, and he was annoyed by it all. Loki also hated that he was curious about something.

"So why do you have a death wish? Wouldn't your life as a human be short enough as it is?"

"Why. No, seriously, why doesn't bother you so much? What is going on in that head of yours? And don't give me some flippant or egotistical answer." He wished the man would sod off but he was getting increasingly too tired to argue.

"I'll answer yours if you answer mine. You'll get what you give." If he gave bullshit he would get it in return

Loki chuckled, smiling in amusement. "A fair bargain. I'm curious because usually humans are so eager to cling to their meager lives. You are a paradox in a way. You seem to put no value in your own life, risking it easily, and yet there are easier ways to expire." All very true, and a genuine answer on Loki's part.

"Besides, you're a passable class partner." Alec was entertaining, and was learning. Loki did kind of enjoy working with him in class, even if it was also frustrating sometimes.

He thought about this, grunting as he ascended a particularly rough patch of stair, refusing to stop despite his injuries and the fact that he'd have to pay for them later.

"You've never felt useless? You've never felt like you weren't enough no matter what you did?"
