He looked around the trees, up into the canopy and down to the layer of dirt and natural mulch beneath their feet. Trees could have ears. Anything could have ears. Perhaps he should have taken a page from Crowley's book and written this down instead. Then again, a paper trail seemed far more incriminating (and he already had one in terms of copious notes).
Perhaps he was just being a bit anxious. After all, Heaven and Hell didn't seem to have much of a presence here (yet) and they were not exactly in the middle of a Cold War.
