September Event Log

The Magicademy has a special treat for students this week: Combined Classes. The Curriculum-by-Curriculum education of the Magicademy lends itself to viewing each Curriculum on its own, not part of the greater whole that is magic. So in lieu of normal lessons this week, Professors are joint-teaching classes to show you what you can do by merging magic together.

Profs. Porfsin & Kith: Making Modification Fantastic

If Diatu students love anything, it's expressing their individuality by wearing unique clothing, particular ones similar to home in the case of the Sundered. Working together, the good Professors will teach you a basic and beloved trick of wizards everywhere: combining Modification and Fantastics to make a spell that provides you with clothes that are outstandingly fashionable and flamboyant on the outside, but fit perfectly and comfortably despite their flair. At last, the secret of how wizards can swoop around in dramatic capes and flowing robes without constantly tripping!

Of course, the potential for mayhem is pretty high in practice. Shrinking clothes, accidentally creating a scarf 250 feet long... Professor Trammel has loaned them his familiar, a top hat named Decorum, so it is on hand to quickly deploy wide black censor bars in the event a mishap leaves you perhaps offering more in the way of an Anatomy of the Sundered class than you might expect. But if you work hard and give it your all, you might come out of this looking good indeed!

Profs. Loshakle & Mala: Advanced Warding

A lesson Professor Loshakle hammers home in his classes: the more broad the spell, the weaker its effect. A ward against fire specifically will repel so much more fire than a general ward, but of course the fire ward is entirely worthless against lightning. Today, these two Professors show one way to get the best of both world: a Predictive Ward.

The theory is simple: Suspend an Intimation effect within the ward's construction, then make the ward manifold-responsive -- or in other terms, capable of shifting its focus from one danger to another. The Intimation spell predicts the damage and preemptively shifts the ward to full effect. Simple!

Enjoy testing them. Since it involves hurling some things at each other. What better way to test a ward than practically?

Profs. Trammel & King: Pocket Summoning

One of the problems inherent to Discovery is the danger involved in creation. For example, if you desire a large quantity of water for whatever reason, you need to create it all at once -- you can't create it ahead of time without a way to transport it, for example. Sundering offers an intriguing possibility that actually is much safer than most of its uses: opening a portal into a small pocket dimension, where you can Discover and store whatever you might need, and release it later in small doses or full-tilt.

Now, mess up the Sundering spell and you could end up discharging a large volume of water or stone or pudding out of midair at a terribly inopportune time. But don't worry! Several groundskeeping golems are on-hand to help with the inevitable messes. Also Professor Trammel knows how to clean clothing. You might need that help.

Headmaster Camillah Birony: ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO ATTEND THIS CLASS

This opportunity is unique. For all her flaws, Headmaster Birony is unquestionably a master wizard, who has developed an entire branch of magic hereto undiscovered by wizardkind. The art of working magic on magic, or as she calls it, "Metamagic".

"And it will be the third Metacurriculum! Wizardkind everywhere will develop and master these powers that I have paved the way for! AND THEY CALLED ME MAD!" she yells to the sky, before flinging her hands wide and laughing maniacally.

So! You get to start very basic: Modifying a spell to last longer. Pick your favorite spell, any spell, and cast it. While its magical energies still exist in the pattern your will has imposed on them, Modify them. A simple equation. Add 1 to them. Multiply them by 2. Whatever works for you.

You don't get much more instruction than that, says the Headmaster, because you have to figure out how to make it work for yourself. More than most magic, this depends entirely on your will and your determination. Everything else is just trappings -- take what you want from the foci of Modification, that will help, but find your own path forward.

And unlike every other lesson, this one is utterly safe. At the first sign of a spell getting out of control or going haywire, Headmaster Birony squelches it like a bug beneath her heel. Not even literally, for a pleasant change!

"Hey! Hey! What if it rips my arm in two or something?!" Yeah, and he wasn't sure he liked it!
sublimelymagnificentblitz: (uwah?!)

"Hey, come on." Everyone had magical mishaps to deal with, didn't they? Don't act like he was the only one!

"I made the hole, I filled it with water. I think. So I stuck a hand in to check! Wasn't gonna put my FACE in there to look and see! But then the thing got stuck somehow!"

Aaron gave a sheepish smile as Yotsuyu complained of his absence, giving a little shrug akin to a teenager getting caught doing something embarrassing. "I'm sorry, I'm not sure what happened. I just woke up back at home, you know? Now I'm here again." It was a very pleasant surprise when she offered him a hug - he hugged her tight. He was glad to see her too, and he wished he hadn't been gone for the time he had.

"I think that would be really helpful - Modification is not what I am best at." His face shifted from concentration to another smile. "I can help you with Fantastics if that's what you're thinking you're struggling with though!" She may recall that his job was making music before he came here, and perhaps his slight disappointment at being in Eiather.

He dug out his little notebook he used to keep Modification notes in, a shortcut system so he didn't have to remember everything. He would often claim he just wasn't smart enough for it, but it was just that he found it less interesting than some of the others. He found the section that corresponded to what he was trying to do and pointed it out to Yotsuyu.

"So this is what I'm using, and this is the design I'm tracing with my wand." He pointed out the corresponding diagram. There was likely a mistake or two in the equations or diagram that Yotsuyu would catch. It looked like he wrote these notes down rather hastily compared to the others around them.

Thankfully, after a few tries (five, to be exact) the portal finally closes.

The water is still there, but at least there's nothing else being added to it?

"... Sorry."

"Oh... that would be bad." The fact that she has to say it is mildly concerning.

Roxas had to dive out of the way to avoid the blast, but fortunately he wasn't hit by anything. He frowned at the barrier.

"That didn't work... do we have to try and destroy it, then?"

That coaxes a smile to his face. Good, styling outfits should be fun!

"If being too warm isn’t an issue, thick fabric should be fine. Try one." While his Modification is no doubt lacking in comparison to her processing ability, he’s willing to offer his voice if called on for the Fantastics part.
sublimelymagnificentblitz: (awkward)

"Yeah, that'd sting." They could probably fix it, but he needs that arm for bala-inlota, damn it. "Can you make the portal wider?"

He wasn't trying to kill them, which is why they were still there. Nodding at Sunset, Noctis looked back at the fire implings.

"Sure, just trying not to hurt 'em." And with everything he had on him, banishing or making things disappear wasn't anything he was ready for.
fatedsacrifice: (So we're gonna go do this thing)

[personal profile] fatedsacrifice 2019-09-17 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Behind her, Yotsuyu got an answering grin though she couldn't see it. "Nothing I guess."

Noctis continued to watch the circling the eagulls and nodded at the suggestion. "Ya..guess I hadn't thought of that." He slightly laughed at what she said about the happy occasion but then thought. Hurriedly he called to mind a spell in case she couldn't maintain the shield.

Feeling like he was back home going through his roster of weapons, finally he produced a bunch of bread and stared at the hungry birds.

"Alright, ready when you are."
fatedsacrifice: (Laugh)

[personal profile] fatedsacrifice 2019-09-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
He couldn't help but laugh at Kuja's comment of 'I hardly need to try'. For some reason and knowing what he knew, that was just hilarious in its own way. Secretly though Noctis was pleased to hear the word 'we'. That was a new thing, but he wasn't going to point it out because if this guy was like Ignis, he'd be more careful in what he said.

At the part about fall and the weather shifting though, the king looked up. "Oh right didn't you want rain or storm clouds awhile back?" This was an echo back to the night everyone wasn't sleeping and seeing visions of enemies that were happening around.
nomoremistergneissguy: (really?)

"No, no, we just don't have...illustrated picture books like this. We've got some illuminated manuscripts and actual books--the Endless made a printing press--but nothing this neat."

Yes, neat. Cliff offered the rest of the books back to Sunset, but was paging through the one he'd retained, brows arching. It wasn't a bit much, it was actually pretty neat. A story with pictures as well. Children on his world would be fascinated--and even he was, a bit!

"It's a bit simple, but that doesn't mean it's silly or bad. I know a couple of people back home who'd even enjoy these...makes me wish I had a scrap of artistic talent outside of making jewelry!"
nomoremistergneissguy: (Default)

[personal profile] nomoremistergneissguy 2019-09-18 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Seems that way, doesn't it?" Have Cliff flat on his back in a pile of miniature leaves--there's a lot of them scattered about, and there's a tree that seems to be enjoying itself, casting more over the young man's prone form. It just makes him even more amused, and he lets out a laugh as some of the leaves fall on his face. He shakes them off eventually, though, and sits up.

"Could be worse...not that I can really think of how at the moment. Though if you avoid the flaming trees, it's mostly okay, I guess?"
mithrarin: (look away)

[personal profile] mithrarin 2019-09-18 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
"I guess so. You'd better get back."

Dust, naturally, assumed he'd have to do it. After all, if Roxas stayed close, those shockwaves would rock his teeth out!
stillnewatthis: (stop!)

[personal profile] stillnewatthis 2019-09-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Orisa picked one up to do just that!

...only to discover what she probably should have concluded already: putting on a scarf is difficult when you have only one hand, and long sweeping horns that get in the way...
fatedsacrifice: Permission granted on Twitter. (Run that by me again)

[personal profile] fatedsacrifice 2019-09-18 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Noctis half laughed at the tree over Cliff's arm that seemed to be having a good time because it reminded him of a cat trying to be fierce. "Not sure the guys back home would believe me if I told them about this place." And while he'd have to wait to tell the guys until they passed back home, it was his own way of still being there with them.

The dark head shook about flaming trees. "Guess even the trees have their own problems too."

His face turned a bit red at Fluttershy being surprised. He himself couldn't figure out why it seemed so important so he was really hoping she wouldn't ask him that question.

Really he wanted to keep all of them but that would be way too weird so he had to stick to just one. But still, he wanted to know what was on her mind regarding it so he had to ask.

"Why..does that surprise you?"

Isabel--is incredibly grateful for her swift reflexes, even as one of Kaiba's belts takes a swipe at her face. She leans back, and the one that goes for her ankles? She jumps over that one.

"Ah, Seto, I think you went a little overboard!" She sounds more amused than annoyed, though, when it comes down to it. "Not sure what I can do, but do you want a hand?"

At least with her bracelet, she might be able to wrangle the belts, a little bit.
hyperdrivemonalisa: (bemused)

Tree Watching

[personal profile] hyperdrivemonalisa 2019-09-18 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
"I've never seen anything like it, and there are lots of weird things that happen back home," said Isabel, rather amused. The flaming tree was like its very own light show in the evening dim, reflecting the orange sky right back at it.

She chortled a bit to herself, even as her familiar decided it was bath time. Chaos leaned over, licking at one of his back legs with enthusiasm, only stopping when a leaf blew into him--he didn't quite jump, but he looked a bit annoyed. His precious dignity, nooo!

"I tell you, I've been half tempted to grab one or two of those giant leaves in case they celebrate something like Halloween around here. Might make an interesting forest nymph costume, I've got to admit," she tells Aaron, conversationally.
bornebygrace: (smile)

[personal profile] bornebygrace 2019-09-18 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Aaron chuckled at the comment. Plenty of weird things happened back in his home as well. "I have to say that I'm in the same boat as you. Of all the weird things to happen at home the trees certainly didn't set themselves on fire." His chuckle carried as Chaos was threatened by a leaf. Aaron could feel Purble shift around in his hoodie and it wasn't long before the platypus was poking his little billed head out of Aaron's pocket and was just looking down to Chaos curiously.

"I hadn't even considered there may be a Halloween here, much less what I'd be if I'd need a costume." He rubbed the back of his head, a little embarrassed he hadn't thought of it - he'd always celebrated his birthday on Halloween. He'd been so focused on his studies he kind of forgot to get his head above school a bit.

"I think that would actually be a really cool costume, and with the magic you could definitely get the leaves to form a dress or something without it being too uncomfortable." Not to mention she was pretty too. He'd never met an ugly fae creature. He smiled and looked at her more directly. "Throw a little glitter on it and bam! Nailed it!" That was probably less serious.

The water quickly spills away and spreads out once the source is sealed up, Noa giving a grumbly sort of cough as he eventually lands on his back.

"Perhaps next time, try for a fountain rather than the ocean," he manages, eyes narrowed and staring emptily upward.

Okay, even Jecht couldn't help but wince.

The portal popped open wider, and after a moment of realization, Jecht yanked his hand free. "Oh, man -- that did it!"

"Of course. Metamagic is a specialty of mine and the primary thrust of the class I myself teach here. I would not pass up the opportunity to further my own education, nor would I squander such a chance by wasting time daydreaming or otherwise failing to pay attention to the subject matter in the manner of the young and foolish. Only by properly examining every available aspect of a spell when it becomes available for examination can we ever truly hope to prise forth the treasure that is true knowledge. Further, while I generally have a proclivity towards magic of a sort as I am more familiar with, there are certain advantages to this mode of magic as well, and I intend to use both together where is appropriate. For example, metamagic feats back home require a hefty fee for both learning and the utilizing of such an ability, a fee generally paid in XP, making such feats prohibitively expensive for high level adventurers who need to increase in level at a rate that compares favorably with the rate of the rest of the party as well as alongside the inevitable rise along the challenge rating tables for each subsequent encounter. This pedagogy however, allows for the learning at the cost only of one's time and efforts. As I am willing to put forth a substantial amount of time and effort to gain the same effect as I would have were I to sacrifice months of adventuring worth of XP, this is advantageous to me. Furthermore, long association with Miss Starshine has impressed upon me both the usefulness as well as the the cost of extraplanar space, known in our world as bags of holding or handy haversacks. With these skills not only would I be able to craft one such bags for myself, but I could, should I apply myself - and I intend to - create a number more that I could sell as an attempt to offset the cost of the tomes and materials that I feel would be useful to my academic endeavors as well as bending towards aiding in the plight against which the Order Of The Stick must toil back home; tomes and materials not otherwise paid for my by teaching stipend and frankly underwhelming pay, that is. As such I am combining all of the lessons learned in this new series of courses with the express attempt of furthering my overall knowledge of how to compel the laws of physics to do my bidding, so that I can then use that knowledge to the aid of my party back home as well as to pass along such knowledge to my students here for such a time as we apparently remain unable to return home."
