September Event Log The Magicademy has a special treat for students this week: Combined Classes. The Curriculum-by-Curriculum education of the Magicademy lends itself to viewing each Curriculum on its own, not part of the greater whole that is magic. So in lieu of normal lessons this week, Professors are joint-teaching classes to show you what you can do by merging magic together. Profs. Porfsin & Kith: Making Modification Fantastic If Diatu students love anything, it's expressing their individuality by wearing unique clothing, particular ones similar to home in the case of the Sundered. Working together, the good Professors will teach you a basic and beloved trick of wizards everywhere: combining Modification and Fantastics to make a spell that provides you with clothes that are outstandingly fashionable and flamboyant on the outside, but fit perfectly and comfortably despite their flair. At last, the secret of how wizards can swoop around in dramatic capes and flowing robes without constantly tripping! Of course, the potential for mayhem is pretty high in practice. Shrinking clothes, accidentally creating a scarf 250 feet long... Professor Trammel has loaned them his familiar, a top hat named Decorum, so it is on hand to quickly deploy wide black censor bars in the event a mishap leaves you perhaps offering more in the way of an Anatomy of the Sundered class than you might expect. But if you work hard and give it your all, you might come out of this looking good indeed! Profs. Loshakle & Mala: Advanced Warding A lesson Professor Loshakle hammers home in his classes: the more broad the spell, the weaker its effect. A ward against fire specifically will repel so much more fire than a general ward, but of course the fire ward is entirely worthless against lightning. Today, these two Professors show one way to get the best of both world: a Predictive Ward. The theory is simple: Suspend an Intimation effect within the ward's construction, then make the ward manifold-responsive -- or in other terms, capable of shifting its focus from one danger to another. The Intimation spell predicts the damage and preemptively shifts the ward to full effect. Simple! Enjoy testing them. Since it involves hurling some things at each other. What better way to test a ward than practically? Profs. Trammel & King: Pocket Summoning One of the problems inherent to Discovery is the danger involved in creation. For example, if you desire a large quantity of water for whatever reason, you need to create it all at once -- you can't create it ahead of time without a way to transport it, for example. Sundering offers an intriguing possibility that actually is much safer than most of its uses: opening a portal into a small pocket dimension, where you can Discover and store whatever you might need, and release it later in small doses or full-tilt. Now, mess up the Sundering spell and you could end up discharging a large volume of water or stone or pudding out of midair at a terribly inopportune time. But don't worry! Several groundskeeping golems are on-hand to help with the inevitable messes. Also Professor Trammel knows how to clean clothing. You might need that help. Headmaster Camillah Birony: ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO ATTEND THIS CLASS This opportunity is unique. For all her flaws, Headmaster Birony is unquestionably a master wizard, who has developed an entire branch of magic hereto undiscovered by wizardkind. The art of working magic on magic, or as she calls it, "Metamagic". "And it will be the third Metacurriculum! Wizardkind everywhere will develop and master these powers that I have paved the way for! AND THEY CALLED ME MAD!" she yells to the sky, before flinging her hands wide and laughing maniacally. So! You get to start very basic: Modifying a spell to last longer. Pick your favorite spell, any spell, and cast it. While its magical energies still exist in the pattern your will has imposed on them, Modify them. A simple equation. Add 1 to them. Multiply them by 2. Whatever works for you. You don't get much more instruction than that, says the Headmaster, because you have to figure out how to make it work for yourself. More than most magic, this depends entirely on your will and your determination. Everything else is just trappings -- take what you want from the foci of Modification, that will help, but find your own path forward. And unlike every other lesson, this one is utterly safe. At the first sign of a spell getting out of control or going haywire, Headmaster Birony squelches it like a bug beneath her heel. Not even literally, for a pleasant change!

What he wouldn't give to be able to perform a simple miracle or two! How hard was it to make a black and red tartan perfectly-tied bow tie to go with his new uniform? Or a beige tartan print for the lining of his uniform? Or one of those fantastic flourishing capes that seemed to always catch the wind, even indoors? He could wear anything from any era! If only his spells would work as intended.

He had watched Yotsuyu practice her spells and, while she had made use of Decorum frequently, Aziraphale still felt that his new friend was probably better skilled at this than he was himself. He crossed the room and politely tapped her on the shoulder.

"Would it maybe be useful to perform on someone else?

"All right, that's not going to do it." She declared, sitting on his beefy arm.

"What's on the other end of the portal?"

She's enjoying the water slide too. Helps that she thinks it's on purpose.

Aaron had noticed Yotsuyu's liberal use of decorum and had taken the time to wriggle out of his now fashionable sweater dress of a hoodie. Letting Purble upon his shoulder, where his little webbed feet gripped onto his shirt as he curled up around Aaron's neck as much as he could.

He approached Yotsuyu and offered her the too long hoodie. "It's certainly not as ornate as you were wearing, but it's something to cover up. I seem to keep making things far too big - maybe we could put our heads together and do something right?" His smile was kind. "We could also practice on me if you'd rather."

Tenn frowns. "Personal style isn’t something to follow on recommendation." (Says the idol without a trace of irony.) "It’s about what you feel expresses who you are."

He gestures to the riot of color and shapes going on in the rest of the room. "Do you see anything you like?"

Considering there’s everything from Tenn’s kepi, to a student trapped in an oversized fez, to someone wearing a pineapple, it’s a broad selection.

"It wasn't supposed to do that...it was supposed to stay contained..."

Making Modification Fantastic
Aaron was struggling, to say the least. For quite some time absolutely nothing happened. He would wave his hands about and do his thing and nothing would change. This continued for longer than it should have, but it did eventually come to an end as he made a shirt far too small for himself. After a few minutes of frustration, Aaron realized that the shirt seemed to be Purble sized, and the platypus seemed to eagerly wriggle its way into the shirt when Aaron offered it - so Purble at the very least got a new something or other out of this class, at least.

The singular Purble shirt was the only Purble clothes to be created, as his immediate next experiment turned his hoodie into a hoodie dress. Well, it was something. Much of his attempts would make things far too long and/or far too big. Aaron tended towards being patient, but it was becoming more and more clear that he was quite frustrated with his attempts at this.

Pocket Summoning
Aaron, ever the glutton for punishment, chose to attend this class. Mostly he felt it would be useful, but he also liked challenges. Mostly he just wanted to create the pocket dimension so he wouldn't have to carry things around in his arms anymore - he couldn't wear a backpack or anything like that because of his wings and he often grew tired of carrying his stuff.

Aaron figured that water would be the best way to test this out. Unsurprisingly, he dumped quite a bit of water on the floor, soaking not only himself but also a (now very happy) Purble. Purble splashed around in the water as Aaron took a seat and ran his hands through his hair. This has happened a few times now, and he thought for sure he'd get it this time.

Tree Watching
Aaron quickly made it a habit to perch himself outside somewhere between classes or when he was not studying. More often than not he had a cigarette in hand, but this was not always the case. His location would vary from day to day, hour to hour. He was staying closer to the ground because of the eagulls, but from the way he looked towards the upper levels of the grounds it was clear that he was interested in finding some spots far above the ground too.

Find Aaron as he watches one of the trees combust, or take special interest in a tree that decided to wander. Strike up a conversation and make bets on who will get knocked over by a giant leaf - he's a friendly guy and he's just amused by the wackiness of this season.

Probably Studying?
Aaron had a room in the Living Quarters and, today, he kept the door open as he studied. Well, "studied". Truth be told he was leaned over his desk with his head on his arms and hood up, asleep. He had a pen in his hand as if he had been writing, but this looked awfully like he'd planned on napping before he succumed to the sleep.

The leaves were not the only thing caught in flame, though the ones at the tips of Kuja's now red hair and tail were completely harmless. He may as well have created the aesthetic himself, if not for that he thought he looked better in Trance without it. It was only too bad that he hadn't created any of it on his own, not knowingly anyway.

He settled one hand on his hip as he approached, watching one of the trees walking along in the distance as if it had somewhere better to be and no hurry to get there.

"Hardly. Given time enough, I expect the weather to come from the very ground itself."

Would that be called rainfall then? He thought not.

He smiled.

"Intimation is based in prayer- or offering supplication to a god or goddess in some fashion. The phrasing can tend to be a little archaic. I chose Raida in casting mine. Here, cast a warding spell, then I'll help you through the prayer side of it. It might not work the first time, but mastering both components will help you to combine them."

His wrist whipped backward and tore the sword from his grasp. Eleven grimaced, knees braced well enough not to fall, but massaged at his wrist all the same. He wandered over to collect his sword and briefly inspected it.

"Well, it worked," he said with a frown, moving back over to Jecht to offer a hand. "Maybe too well. I'm not sure it was supposed to deflect that strongly. Are you all right?"

Speak the equation in Osmarius. Eleven grimaced. At least he was taking it as a language class and now was starting to grasp familiar words and symbols.

"I haven't done any modification at all," he confessed. "I'm not any good at numbers. I can teach you the warding spell, if you'd help teach me to modify it."

His eyes closed for a moment against the suddenness of the spell, but the ward held. Only a wisp of a warm breeze passed through. It could use improvement, he decided, but his chest lit with excitement. It worked.

"Clever use of Discovery," he said with a grin. "I wouldn't have thought of using my sword to draw a rune. Do you want me to try a spell against you next?"

"...I can't."

He's out of water. The water he was storing in his pocket. It's run out.

Noctis is flipping through a book..and realized that he misprononunced the second to last word. Well it ranked up there with not being able to pronounce LunaFreya's name as a kid, the Fodina Caestino place or that one spell with the mouse that turned him into a toad.

Good thing that didn't happen again, but..

Looking over he saw someone that he'd never spoken to before. Closing the book shut, the king shook his head.

"Ya..not..really." This was accompanied with his head going back into his hair.

Yotsuyu's gesture reminded him of Ignis with his ability to get all the guys to go to him. "Glad to see I'm not the only one they're after." Noctis said, keeping his back to hers because old habits crept up on him at the oddest times.

He grinned when she chuckled, grateful for her help and her company. "I appreciate the help." Her words reminded him of the night they met near that one daemon. She'd seemed to be intentionally trying to piss it off and he didn't know what Yotsuyu was doing.

Noct was prepared in case the shield fell, and his father's sword was at the ready. He'd learned back home that shields and walls had their limits.

"Just..extra feathers? You mean you don't need them?" Yuki asked, sure that Fluttershy had to put them back somehow or something. He didn't want to ask any other questions at the moment about them, so he dropped that subject for now.

The gray head shook. "You don't need to apologize..but..how long have you been able to do..what you were doing?" Yuki didn't have a name for what he'd seen. To him she had looked like some sort of angel like person.

"Oh, then let me try!"

With that, she hops to his side. "All I have to do is make a portal to where water is, right?"

"It's something I've been practicing. I'm not sure how good my own wards are, though." Intimation was not one of his strengths. "You'll have to go really light on me."

"Buncha water." What else would Jecht of all people have summoned? "Not much to go on there, I don't think."

Slapping his hand into the kid's, Jecht pulled himself back fully onto his feet with a flex of his arm and a lot of strength and mass behind it. "Yeah, uh, that might've been a bit too much. Ain't much good when it knocks me over, is it?"

Too broad. "I have no grounding or knowledge of such things. My database was not focused on style. If I am going solely by my purpose, I would have a helmet. But I don't think this is stylish, and I am already armored."

Truth be told, she had no idea what would make her look good in even the most general terms.

Not a great shock, no. "But what if we drain the water? Maybe that would help!"

Fluttershy couldn't help a soft giggle. "I'll take that as a compliment, thank you."

Once she was finished, she dusted off her hands. "All right, that's enough for now, everyone. Time to go."

Even so, they animals continued to linger around her.
