September Event Log

The Magicademy has a special treat for students this week: Combined Classes. The Curriculum-by-Curriculum education of the Magicademy lends itself to viewing each Curriculum on its own, not part of the greater whole that is magic. So in lieu of normal lessons this week, Professors are joint-teaching classes to show you what you can do by merging magic together.

Profs. Porfsin & Kith: Making Modification Fantastic

If Diatu students love anything, it's expressing their individuality by wearing unique clothing, particular ones similar to home in the case of the Sundered. Working together, the good Professors will teach you a basic and beloved trick of wizards everywhere: combining Modification and Fantastics to make a spell that provides you with clothes that are outstandingly fashionable and flamboyant on the outside, but fit perfectly and comfortably despite their flair. At last, the secret of how wizards can swoop around in dramatic capes and flowing robes without constantly tripping!

Of course, the potential for mayhem is pretty high in practice. Shrinking clothes, accidentally creating a scarf 250 feet long... Professor Trammel has loaned them his familiar, a top hat named Decorum, so it is on hand to quickly deploy wide black censor bars in the event a mishap leaves you perhaps offering more in the way of an Anatomy of the Sundered class than you might expect. But if you work hard and give it your all, you might come out of this looking good indeed!

Profs. Loshakle & Mala: Advanced Warding

A lesson Professor Loshakle hammers home in his classes: the more broad the spell, the weaker its effect. A ward against fire specifically will repel so much more fire than a general ward, but of course the fire ward is entirely worthless against lightning. Today, these two Professors show one way to get the best of both world: a Predictive Ward.

The theory is simple: Suspend an Intimation effect within the ward's construction, then make the ward manifold-responsive -- or in other terms, capable of shifting its focus from one danger to another. The Intimation spell predicts the damage and preemptively shifts the ward to full effect. Simple!

Enjoy testing them. Since it involves hurling some things at each other. What better way to test a ward than practically?

Profs. Trammel & King: Pocket Summoning

One of the problems inherent to Discovery is the danger involved in creation. For example, if you desire a large quantity of water for whatever reason, you need to create it all at once -- you can't create it ahead of time without a way to transport it, for example. Sundering offers an intriguing possibility that actually is much safer than most of its uses: opening a portal into a small pocket dimension, where you can Discover and store whatever you might need, and release it later in small doses or full-tilt.

Now, mess up the Sundering spell and you could end up discharging a large volume of water or stone or pudding out of midair at a terribly inopportune time. But don't worry! Several groundskeeping golems are on-hand to help with the inevitable messes. Also Professor Trammel knows how to clean clothing. You might need that help.

Headmaster Camillah Birony: ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO ATTEND THIS CLASS

This opportunity is unique. For all her flaws, Headmaster Birony is unquestionably a master wizard, who has developed an entire branch of magic hereto undiscovered by wizardkind. The art of working magic on magic, or as she calls it, "Metamagic".

"And it will be the third Metacurriculum! Wizardkind everywhere will develop and master these powers that I have paved the way for! AND THEY CALLED ME MAD!" she yells to the sky, before flinging her hands wide and laughing maniacally.

So! You get to start very basic: Modifying a spell to last longer. Pick your favorite spell, any spell, and cast it. While its magical energies still exist in the pattern your will has imposed on them, Modify them. A simple equation. Add 1 to them. Multiply them by 2. Whatever works for you.

You don't get much more instruction than that, says the Headmaster, because you have to figure out how to make it work for yourself. More than most magic, this depends entirely on your will and your determination. Everything else is just trappings -- take what you want from the foci of Modification, that will help, but find your own path forward.

And unlike every other lesson, this one is utterly safe. At the first sign of a spell getting out of control or going haywire, Headmaster Birony squelches it like a bug beneath her heel. Not even literally, for a pleasant change!

What the -!? Was she CRACKING UP?

The sheer unexpectedness of it rolled over the ridiculousness of it all and caught him up in the wave. He began to laugh too, harder and harder until he was slamming one fist into the muddy ground next to them and trying not to thrash and take her out in doing so.

"Yeah...that makes sense."

She couldn't help a small sigh though. She was so close too.

[personal profile] shiningkindness 2019-10-10 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That made a lot of sense, in an admittedly strange way. "But how will I know when I'll be able to get to it?"

Lena snorted a laugh as she took back the purple hoodie. "Y'know, if I could find a pumpkin, I'd totally try turning it into something mobile."

Once Webby had the pink one, she slipped the purple one on, zipping it up but not yet putting on the hood. "Try seeing if that one will turn you invisible too."

Lena nodded. "Yeah, that's fair. This place is pretty unpredictable."

"Okay! Sayonara, sister!" She flipped it over, and ala-peanutbuttersandwich, she was gone! ... At least to the eye.

"Ooo. I'm adorable and no one can tell."
stillnewatthis: (hello!)

[personal profile] stillnewatthis 2019-10-11 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
"It is predictably unpredictable! That is at least something." Always look on the bright side, right, Lena?
sublimelymagnificentblitz: (a hero never... wait)

[personal profile] sublimelymagnificentblitz 2019-10-11 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
"So hit me with somethin' simple. Get it right first, then build up!" He motioned to himself, apparently meaning that literally. Come on, he can take it!
darkenedmoon: (Amused)

[personal profile] darkenedmoon 2019-10-11 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"If you ever do that again, you will be on your own!" Yotsuyu threatened. Emptily, in truth--as if she would leave the poor fool to his own devices, missing his entire arm. Still, she had something of a reputation to uphold--and thus, posturing!

She still couldn't help but stifle a snicker, especially since he was practically rolling about in the mud like a hog, now. "You are a mess!"
magicademynpcs: (Professor Trammel)

Headmaster Birony looks at V oddly, then points a finger at the window and sketches out a surprisingly-complicated mathematical equation in midair. With a puff of magic, the window is abruptly a chair.

"That point is, forgive me, exactly wrong," Professor Trammel says, as if the Headmaster hadn't made a point behind him. "The Codifications do exactly define magic as we are capable of wielding it. That is their purpose. You could, in fact, look at them as a great magic whose sole purpose is to define magic according to strictures, so that humans - ah, forgive me once more, so that non-dragons may use magic in any functional way. That means venturing out of them is impossible in any normal circumstances, and we must instead expand them from the inside. Your methods of magic are fundamentally and inherently incompatible with ours."
magicademynpcs: (Cam Birony)

[personal profile] magicademynpcs 2019-10-11 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"When you succeed. Point is, working metamagic on it before you succeed is a bad idea, because you're trying to shape something you don't quite have into a shape you don't quite know, you get it?"
gender_neutral: (YOU ARE ALL IDIOTS!)

[personal profile] gender_neutral 2019-10-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
"AND YET THEY EXIST!" V found the transformation of the window to be petty and small, rather than impressive. Way to intentionally miss the point. "Our ways of doing magic EXIST. And thus your definitions need to be broadened!"
magicademynpcs: (Cam Birony)

[personal profile] magicademynpcs 2019-10-12 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Yep. Broadened." Headmaster Birony smiles. "Not forced. Not like how you're doing it. Because magic here, if you don't play by the rules, generally goes crazy. Dragons can use it, we can't. You want to play by your rules, then fit them into the ones already here, 'cuz if you decide to start up a new game you're gonna have a bad time. That's what I keep trying to tell you."
gender_neutral: (What I think of that!)

[personal profile] gender_neutral 2019-10-13 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
"THEN BROADEN THEM!" By all the elven gods it was like talking to Elan except more frustrating because there keeps ALMOST being hope here.
hotheadwarmheart: (Confused)

[personal profile] hotheadwarmheart 2019-10-14 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Lea considered a moment. "Maybe we're mispronouncing something?", he said. "Though usually that does something a whole lot more obvious than nothing." Generally of either then dagerous or hilarious variety.
sublimelymagnificentblitz: (fist pump)

[personal profile] sublimelymagnificentblitz 2019-10-15 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're only cleaner because you landed on me!" Jecht pointed an accusing finger at her, propping himself up with his other arm. "And you're laughing about it all too!"
darkenedmoon: (smile or smirk)

[personal profile] darkenedmoon 2019-10-15 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"Was I supposed to land in the mud too? Oh, I am sorry, I did not get the message!" Yotsuyu snorted. "And of course I am laughing, you look like a swine, rolling around in the mud as you are!"

No, she felt absolutely no remorse--not for landing on him (a prudent move on her part, she thought), and certainly not for laughing at his predicament. He'd gotten himself into it mostly, losing his arm in that portal. And she had helped him get it back!

"You could thank me, you know."
sublimelymagnificentblitz: (big grin)

[personal profile] sublimelymagnificentblitz 2019-10-16 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I should thank you!"

Jecht bent forward and rolled to his feet, the sort of move that came from a world-class athlete instead of a burly middle-aged goofball. He was both, after all, even if a lot of people forgot the former! (But rarely Yotsuyu, though, the way she attended practices.)

Then he spread his arms, mud dripping off to the ground below. "You're terrific! Lemme give you a big hug..."
magicademynpcs: (Professor Trammel)

[personal profile] magicademynpcs 2019-10-16 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"We are. Do you truly believe the process is instantaneous?" Professor Trammel regards the elf with aplomb that becomes more enforced the louder he's addressed. "It requires time, education, skill, commitment, and comprehension."
darkenedmoon: (what??)

[personal profile] darkenedmoon 2019-10-16 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think not! Not after you've wallowed like a hog!" Yotsuyu backed off quickly, moving to higher ground--or at least dryer ground, away from Jecht's outstretched arms. She still had her fan, and moved it in an intricate pattern, muttering under her breath. Luckily for her, he was so intent on hugging her that he failed to notice the him-sized sphere of water coalescing above his head.

Which, with another gesture, dumped unceremoniously upon him. She might get spattered, but at least it was only water, now, not laced with mud and lightly scented with sea salt and beach grass by her own design. May as well ensure he doesn't smell bad, after all this...
sublimelymagnificentblitz: (big grin)

[personal profile] sublimelymagnificentblitz 2019-10-16 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, he didn't see it coming, but he expected it! So when the water poured down on him, he just laughed, spreading his arms even wider to get all the crud off them too. It even smelled good!

"Nice spell!"
darkenedmoon: (sly)

[personal profile] darkenedmoon 2019-10-16 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"As if you should expect anything less," Yotsuyu sniffed. At least he was much cleaner, now. And he wasn't likely to end up a smelly mess--save if he went to bala-inlota practice later, but that would be a lost cause anyway.

"I am the one with the nice spells." Though there was a bit of arrogance there, Yotsuyu felt it was entirely deserved.
sublimelymagnificentblitz: (fist pump)

[personal profile] sublimelymagnificentblitz 2019-10-17 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nope! I sure don't expect anything less from you, 'cuz that's you all over!" Jecht wasn't above feeding that ego, not when it was deserved, and that little scenting trick deserved some praise. "How'd you pull that off anyway?"
darkenedmoon: (curious)

[personal profile] darkenedmoon 2019-10-17 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Pull off which?" The water part, well, that was obvious, even if he hadn't seen it coming into existence over his head. "The best way I can put it is I chained Discovery magic. First water, then scented oil and simple sea salt into the water. The salt dissolved, because you shall note that it was not cold water."

Yes, there was some smugness there as she explained it, but Yotsuyu doubted she could be called to task for that, either. She no longer wallowed in her pride, but a good spell was a good spell!
sublimelymagnificentblitz: (big grin)

[personal profile] sublimelymagnificentblitz 2019-10-17 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"All together that quick, huh?" Guess he shouldn't be surprised. Magic's all about will and Yotsuyu was strong-willed if anyone was. Still, he shook his head with a grin. "You're something else, y'know."
