September Event Log The Magicademy has a special treat for students this week: Combined Classes. The Curriculum-by-Curriculum education of the Magicademy lends itself to viewing each Curriculum on its own, not part of the greater whole that is magic. So in lieu of normal lessons this week, Professors are joint-teaching classes to show you what you can do by merging magic together. Profs. Porfsin & Kith: Making Modification Fantastic If Diatu students love anything, it's expressing their individuality by wearing unique clothing, particular ones similar to home in the case of the Sundered. Working together, the good Professors will teach you a basic and beloved trick of wizards everywhere: combining Modification and Fantastics to make a spell that provides you with clothes that are outstandingly fashionable and flamboyant on the outside, but fit perfectly and comfortably despite their flair. At last, the secret of how wizards can swoop around in dramatic capes and flowing robes without constantly tripping! Of course, the potential for mayhem is pretty high in practice. Shrinking clothes, accidentally creating a scarf 250 feet long... Professor Trammel has loaned them his familiar, a top hat named Decorum, so it is on hand to quickly deploy wide black censor bars in the event a mishap leaves you perhaps offering more in the way of an Anatomy of the Sundered class than you might expect. But if you work hard and give it your all, you might come out of this looking good indeed! Profs. Loshakle & Mala: Advanced Warding A lesson Professor Loshakle hammers home in his classes: the more broad the spell, the weaker its effect. A ward against fire specifically will repel so much more fire than a general ward, but of course the fire ward is entirely worthless against lightning. Today, these two Professors show one way to get the best of both world: a Predictive Ward. The theory is simple: Suspend an Intimation effect within the ward's construction, then make the ward manifold-responsive -- or in other terms, capable of shifting its focus from one danger to another. The Intimation spell predicts the damage and preemptively shifts the ward to full effect. Simple! Enjoy testing them. Since it involves hurling some things at each other. What better way to test a ward than practically? Profs. Trammel & King: Pocket Summoning One of the problems inherent to Discovery is the danger involved in creation. For example, if you desire a large quantity of water for whatever reason, you need to create it all at once -- you can't create it ahead of time without a way to transport it, for example. Sundering offers an intriguing possibility that actually is much safer than most of its uses: opening a portal into a small pocket dimension, where you can Discover and store whatever you might need, and release it later in small doses or full-tilt. Now, mess up the Sundering spell and you could end up discharging a large volume of water or stone or pudding out of midair at a terribly inopportune time. But don't worry! Several groundskeeping golems are on-hand to help with the inevitable messes. Also Professor Trammel knows how to clean clothing. You might need that help. Headmaster Camillah Birony: ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO ATTEND THIS CLASS This opportunity is unique. For all her flaws, Headmaster Birony is unquestionably a master wizard, who has developed an entire branch of magic hereto undiscovered by wizardkind. The art of working magic on magic, or as she calls it, "Metamagic". "And it will be the third Metacurriculum! Wizardkind everywhere will develop and master these powers that I have paved the way for! AND THEY CALLED ME MAD!" she yells to the sky, before flinging her hands wide and laughing maniacally. So! You get to start very basic: Modifying a spell to last longer. Pick your favorite spell, any spell, and cast it. While its magical energies still exist in the pattern your will has imposed on them, Modify them. A simple equation. Add 1 to them. Multiply them by 2. Whatever works for you. You don't get much more instruction than that, says the Headmaster, because you have to figure out how to make it work for yourself. More than most magic, this depends entirely on your will and your determination. Everything else is just trappings -- take what you want from the foci of Modification, that will help, but find your own path forward. And unlike every other lesson, this one is utterly safe. At the first sign of a spell getting out of control or going haywire, Headmaster Birony squelches it like a bug beneath her heel. Not even literally, for a pleasant change!

"At this point, I feel like I need all the help I can get." For many reasons, not that he wanted to get into that. "I'd really appreciate it."

"Sure. That's what friends do, right?"

He offers Dust a hand to shake. "I'd be happy to help."

"Stuff pops out of nowhere sometimes around here," Sunset sighed. "Maybe the thing I'm looking for is here somewhere. I thought it was worth a try."

"...yeah, it wouldn't be. Especially if my friend Pinkie was nearby. When she throws glitter, everything tends to explode."

"Thanks. Sorry you got caught up in this, anyway."

She reaches over to help pluck some out of his fur.

"Taking twenty?"

[burningbrighter]

"I do. Rainbow and Pinkie do too...but Twilight loves more serious books. She'd never be caught dead with a comic."

She smiles faintly. "That's...actually happened to me. A magic stone erased all my memories, and I'm sure something like that could happen here. But I've learned there's a trick to get around that...making memories."

She brushes her finger over the page.

Kaiba doesn't care at this point, as long as he gets out. He smirks as she draws them to fight her, the fabric pulling away from him just enough...she expertly dances out of the way, or he assumes she does because he can't really see.

He finally wriggles his legs free, gets them under him, and stumbles toward her, looking worse for the wear but relieved to see her.

"So that's the key? Distract them?

There's not much he can do with his hands bound but he manages a small spark of lightning, loosening them a little. He pulls.

"I just don't know anymore."

She sweeps the books into her bag and shakes her head. "I swear this school is making me lose my mind. Do you ever feel that way?"

"Often, and not exclusively from this school."

Her eyes widened. "Is she a mad scientist?" Those are the best kind!

"Let me know if there's anything I can do in exchange." Dust shook his hand, if a bit briefly and awkwardly. "Even if there isn't much right now that needs to be hit with swords."

Lucky he didn't have too much exposed fur.

"That's just how it is around here," he said, philosophically. "There's always some sort of disaster going on, right?"

"That is precisely what we are doing with the lessons here," the Professor explains. "As for involving you more, you have seen the results of experimentation from our most skilled and knowledgeable researchers. Can you imagine that involving those less skilled would produce better results?"

In truth, she was rather pleased with her own handiwork. There was a certain amount of pride--justified pride!--in a job well done. No arrogance--though there were times where she certainly was that.

"You shall have to show me tartan, if you can. I am interested in seeing such, even if I am not certain it would suit me to wear such!"

Though Yotsuyu waved a dismissive hand at Aziraphale, then. "No, no. I was quite happy to do it, and to have pleased you. It is not as if I have not gained more understanding in magic, as well, so you have done me a service!"

Though if he wanted her to explain it to him--she would, but--it might be a bit difficult to do. Still, she'd do her best.

"Oh, wow. I mean...El did that too, sort of, but it was...weirder, I guess. Like he lived back at his home for a while, and time actually passed a lot, there...but it was only a couple of days here. Your experience doesn't sound like that," Isabel admitted.

Isabel made a face at Aaron's next words. "Okay, you're pale, but you do not sparkle, and like...ew. No. No. Edward you are not. No, I'd rather be more inspired than that!" And, well. She liked to think her idea was pretty inspired. "Besides, having wings? That's so cool!" Apparently Isabel was definitely her mother's daughter, being infatuated with that idea.

"Chaos? I named him that for a reason!" As Aaron introduced herself, she laughed and waggled a finger at him as if to say 'oh, you'. "I don't know, you two are almost an unbeatable duo of cuteness." She shrugged as he asked if she had musical talent. "I have at least some! I'm no Cultist of Ecstasy, though. That and I was a bit more of a jock back home, I guess. Known more for my physical ability, but the only way you get a name for that here is playing bala-inlota, and I wanted to be sure of my schoolwork before I picked that up! I am in Valhudor, though, so I guess someone agrees with my assertion that I have some talent!"

"I guess? Seems to be working!" Isabel wasn't sure, but even as she was tiring, the belts seemed to be, as well. Fine by her, especially if they tired first!!

There might be something of a dance in her movements, considering the way she fights. Sweeping movements, mostly with her legs--they're a bit better equipped to take the blows from the belts, between the muscles themselves and the fact that there's more area there. She might have some welts, but Isabel never cared about that sort of thing--and there's a lesson there, too.

"Makes me wish I actually had a weapon," Isabel said, irrepressibly cheerful. "Probably could snap those right off of you!" She was tempted to try to use the force whip as a bullwhip, but she was unwieldy at best with such a thing, and actually harming Seto? That was right out.

"It did?" Cliff looked a bit startled at that. "Yeah, I bet a magic stone could erase your memories...then again. Stone's something I've got a little bit of experience with. Hopefully if it was a rock, it's something I could stave off."

He wasn't sure, but Cliff sure tried to be a font of optimism.

But then, he laughed. "We've made a few ourselves, too, right? So it's not that bad! You need to tell me more about your friends, too. So if you forget, I can remind you!"

She frowned, puzzled. "I'm...not sure I understand..."

She jumps a bit when the gelatin splattered on the ground, then glances at the headmaster.

"Right...but then, what should I do with this spell in the meantime? Do I just...leave it?"

She snickered a bit. "Though it'd be hard if we couldn't see each other."

Even so, she retrieved her wand again, trying to think of how she'd made the first jacket in the first place.

"Let's see...we were doing that combining magic thing and using Modification and Fantastics together. I was just trying to make a regular hoodie..."

"Maybe she could show up someday. You never know."

"I don't think anything can be 'regular' here." She pointed out, beginning to play with the sleeves. "The word has totally lost meaning."

"You're doing something real complicated and adding in something more on top of it. You wanna learn the something more, you gotta start small."

"...Oh..." Her frown deepened as she glanced at her notes. "I...guess that's true."
