A quest for the breath of a Flower

Who: Loki of Asgard and YOU!
What: Loki has been set a scavenger hunt quest by the Sphinx.
Where: Around Anastara
When: Before he goes on a pub-crawl with Rosh. ~~Because y'all don't need a hungover God of Mischief doing adventures, funny as that is.~~
Warnings: Potential language? Definite shenanigans.

Well, Loki knew the answer to the riddle. Finding an example of it would be more difficult. Was there a flower on Anastara that was known as "name" Breath? Could he find Baby's breath here? Loki honestly wasn't sure, but he was going to do it anyways.

As much as he was loathe to, Loki also knew he'd need people more familiar with Anastara than him to try and help. So, since people here seemed to actually be willing to work with him, he'll seek out those who had been friendly for aid.

Diatu Library
There was still so much to learn, but Loki had a more specific purpose this time than just browsing. First stop would be the school Library, to see if there was any lore about flora that had 'breath' in it's proper name or folk name. Currently he's up on a ladder, tall form stretched up and looking through more obscure flora taxonomies and herbiaries.

Dragonfire Library
Whatever he couldn't find in the school Library, he was sure he'd find leads in the Dragonfire Library. Even if he didn't, Loki'd planned on checking out the Dragonfire Library anyways. He appreciated Isabel's warning; this visit he planned to be on the up and up, given his goal. But it wouldn't hurt to do some scouting and learn more about the library while he was there...

"The Backwater" Tavern
The last place, beyond just walking around to explore the green areas of the island, that Loki went to was "The Backwater" tavern in the third ring. Because the 'common' folk as it were, often knew just as much about folk medicine and names as anyone else. If there was a flower or herb with 'breath' in its name or lore, he was hoping for a lead here.

While there, he's not opposed to joining in some singing and drinking. Loki has a fine enough voice, and while not letting himself get drunk yet, he'll certainly accept a drink or three.

Hendrik had been in the library studying. All of this book learning was still a challenge for him but of course he was trying. He had a quill, ink and a scroll nearby as he was working on this Draconic Knowledge class and it was slow going so far.

He thought back to his comment about how the scholars of Heliodor should investigate the great Sniflheim library and even with it's myriad monsters, it would still prove to be a vast treasure trove of knowledge. However, he never meant that he should be among them at any point, in any library ever.

So he got up to stretch his legs and took a small walk around. And that's when he came across a familiar sight. So he stood back some length before addressing the other. "What is it that you are seeking knowledge on?"

Loki, up on the ladder, looked down at Hendrik, mouth quirking into a smile. "Hendrik. How nice to see you." Book tucked in one arm, he made sure his position was secure on the ladder but made no move to come down. "I have been set a task by the Sphinx, and while I can answer her riddle capably, she requires a physical object. I was seeking flowers that might be said to have 'breath' about their name or type."

"A sphinx?" He'd only heard tales of them from Gallopolis, but hadn't ever paid much attention, he was never there long enough to listen.

"So it is requiring you to give it flowers?" And what was the deal with the whole breath thing. He looked at the book in Loki's hands and thought a moment. "Do you require assistance?"

Crowley was in the middle of studying... which to him involved setting up his books like two pillars of a goal post and working on his aim to get the paper football to fly directly between them. It was very serious work and it required an entire picnic table to accomplish.

"Let me get this straight..." He spoke while lining up his next shot, "You are looking for Baby's Breath?"

With a flick of his fingers the paper football flew right between the goal to bounce rather harmlessly off Loki's forehead. GOAL!

"Why not go to a florist? They must have one around here... Everyone likes a flower."

Blue-green eyes narrowed in annoyance at the object. Before he picked it up and flicked it right back. "I have a feeling it won't be that simple. These beings like to make things complicated, therefore I can't just go buy it. If it even exists on this world."

"It requires the answer to its riddle, in the form of a physical flower. It's a scavenger hunt, apparently. Rumors said that the Sphinx might try that, instead of a straight game of riddles." Loki responded, before raising an eyebrow. "I don't require it, but it would not be turned down. You are more familiar with this world than I am."

Hey! And just like that the little football came back. Crowley lined up for anther shot.

"You could grow some. It will only take a week or two. If you have any seeds?"

"That requires me to have seeds. Which I don't. Why would I have seeds for that anyway?" Loki was ready this time for when the paper football came at him. Time to catch it.

"You could have. They are always giving away those little baby's breath freebie packs when ever you buy a plant."

The flick of the football send it wild, right into one of the goal posts and crazy twisty-turning through the air. It was catchable if you were quick.

"Does the school have a garden club?"

Loki was quick, and bothered to catch the paper football only so it wouldn't be thrown at him again. Crowley was given a look, as if to say do I look like the kind who buys plants?. "I'm not sure. I'm not sure the plant even exists on this world. Hence why I'm looking for it, or one like it."

No touchdown? Ah well... you couldn't win them all. And maybe Loki was the sort to buy plants, it was hard to tell just by looking. Not many would have pinpointed Crowley as being fond of plants.

"That's a problem."

He sniffed and leaned back away from the table.

"If its a challenge maybe they want you to use these new powers you have. Are you a sundered? Maybe you could open a portal and summon some plant seeds."

"I am, but there has to be an easier way than that to get what I need." Loki responded, before tossing the football idly back in Crowley's direction. "More likely I could Discover it." Which wasn't a bad idea...

Not nearly as quick the football slipped through Crowley's fingers to land on the grass behind him. It was easily enough retrieved.

"What's that? Like create it from thin air? I'd love to see you try."

Loki said nothing while he thought. Granted he had only just begun learning Discovery, but it was the most appropriate magic for this situation. The complication would be that he would be creating a sapient living thing, even if not a sentient one. A plant was more difficult than the basic elements.

"If I'm understanding correctly, it's less creating from thin-air than making it so it must be. Which is just semantics in one way, but two different concepts in another." It reminded him of Illusion Manipulation versus Duplicate Casting. Both seemed to be the same but were actually different.

Loki had mastered those...

Yugi was trying his best to at least learn as much as he can about this place and the magic in general. But today it was mostly about plants because by not knowing he was worried that could lead to bad things.

So he was looing over the shelves that he could actually reached and finding himself pausing for a moment, looking up.

"Excuse me.... Ah I see you are looking for something yourself."

Same thing! The result would have been that this baby's breath seemingly materialized from the nothing he currently had if he could manage it... Crowley didn't really care about the where's and how's of it all as magic of that sort had always been really easy for him. 'Miracles' they called it back home.

The novelty from this came from watching some one who looked very human trying to use magic they had never had before. Was it a good or a bad idea to encourage Loki to try his Discovery powers?

"Might as well get your wand and give it a go. It's probably the only way to complete this quest."

Loki turned as he was addressed, hand still on the spine of the books he'd been tracing. Looking over their titles to see if they might be what he wanted. "We're in a library after all." Of course he was here looking for something. Perhaps the other was just bad at conversation?

He shook his head. "I cannot say where there are flowers around here. However, that information could be obtained very easily." All he figured they had to do was inquire with children or take a look at a map or ask a female or two if they were carrying them.

"Correct, although I'd rather have some idea of what I'm looking for properly, so I have a better chance of finding it." Hence, Loki was doing research. "If it turns out to be something as simple as a wildflower, it won't be hard to locate. If however, it turns out to only grow in certain places, under certain conditions, that'll make it more difficult."

Loki hated using his wand. Wands were so...clumsy at times. "It also depends on if they mean a plant from this world or not." But he really had nothing to lose by trying. Holding up a hand, a wand appeared in his hand in a shimmer of greenish-yellow magic.

Taking a moment to sort out what syllables and sigils in Osmarius were needed for what he wanted. This would be creating a living thing, in some ways, which made it more difficult. This was forging magical energy into physical matter and being, and making it so it must be. Loki wanted to be sure he had this correct.

He was confident he could do it though. Setting what he wanted firmly in his mind, he started tracing sigils with his wand, and naming them as he did. His voice was strong, he was precise and focused...

With the last intonation and sigil traced, a sprig of baby's breath appeared on the table.

Prepared to sink down under the table if the spell had gone wrong Crowley was actually pleasantly surprised to see the sprig. It looked like baby's breath and even better it looked to be fairly healthy. Oh, it could have used a little dirt and a touch of fertilizer but it was green with white petals and now drooping leaves.

"Hey! It looks like a success!"

Crowley snagged one of those bottled waters people were always walking around with from a passing student and dropped the little sprout into it so that it wouldn't wilt away.

"Guess all that's left to do it deliver it."

"Let's hope it is this simple." Loki replied. He'd been trying to determine if the other had no confidence in him, and if so, was he surprised Loki had succeeded? And did Loki want to be insulted by that.

In the end however, it wasn't worth it to him. Yet. So he simply let his wand vanish much like how it had appeared, and held out his hand for the bottle.

"Some times the simple things are the ones people have the most trouble with."

Of course there was always the chance this wouldn't be what the Sphinx wanted but Crowley handed the make-shift vase over so Loki could find out for himself if this was the correct answer or not.

One might think that a magical school's library would have means of getting books on high shelves besides a ladder. Or at least, that they'd have more than one ladder. But, as it turns out? Not so much. At least, not anything that Della has come across, and she's getting antsy. Libraries are pretty neat, sure! But she wants to get going on this homework so she can get it over with, and to do that, she needs a book that's shelved about five feet off the ground. Perhaps not an issue for most, but ducks - even when people - are not tall. She'd been pacing around nearby, but enough is enough. Della walks over to the base of the ladder and calls up to Loki, hands on her hips.

"Hey, buddy! Think you'll be done any time soon?"

The eyebrow raised up, in annoyance with that remark. Now, Loki was irritated. The other seemed to be implying he was having trouble with this task and that grated. He was in an entirely new world with potentially different rules than what he knew, and having to adapt and survive it. Loki didn't trust that it would be that simple, just because things rarely were. If it were, he'd have done it earlier just to be done.

Still, Loki had a flower now that fulfilled the requirements, and it was preserved enough in its makeshift vase.
